hey mr. keating, idek if you're still active on here but like. i need advice real bad so here we go i used to be a slam poet. i was actually pretty good too, i won second place in my city, but i quit after one of my main poetry idols stopped talking to me out of nowhere. every time i try to pick it back up i feel really sick and embarrassed that what i write will never be as good as him. i don't know wjat to do because i do want to get my old skill back but it all just feels so pointless and dumb. thanks for everything,

No, I'm not active on Tumblr anymore, but this felt like a special case as I think you really need it. As it stands now, I will not be making any more posts after this, I apologize.

I'm deeply sorry about what happened with the person you looked up to, I've felt similar pain and the toll that it takes on you not is only emotionally taxing but creatively as well. It can be extremely difficult to dig yourself out of that hole, and I'm proud of you for trying, even if it hasn't worked out quite yet.

Think back to when you started writing poetry, think about when you started performing it, and ask yourself why you set off down that path in the first place. Did you start writing to impress this person, did you start performing to do so? My assumption would be that the answer is no, but there's no shame if it's yes. Either way, you personally enjoyed the craft enough to continue, which leads me to my next question. When you wrote, what was it that you hoped would happen either to you or within you? Was it for an emotional release? Was it an attempt to put words to a concept you couldn't quite grasp yet? Whatever it may be, try to appeal to that part of yourself, the part that made you as a beginner willing to go into writing in the first place.

Here's the secret about poetry that most of us know, but have a hard time taking to heart: it does not have to be good, and you don't need to like what you wrote. You can have such a deep hatred for your own piece of writing that you tear it apart, burn it, bury it, and none of that would matter. What matters is that you write, you write, you write. It can be short, it can be a sentence, phrase, even just a single word with implied meaning - as long as you're writing, your skills will improve. Words on a page don't care if you hate them or not.

I know what you're saying, "How am I supposed to continue writing if I hate everything I write? Won't that demotivate me more?"

Not if you don't let it. Obviously that's much easier said than done, believe me when I say I've figured that out on my own. I can offer a tip, but I can't inject any burnout immunity into you; write about how much you hate your writing. Even hatred for the very thing you're doing is a feeling you can put on a page. I had a student back in the day who refused to take my class seriously, he said that poetry was too hard, too dumb, any excuse you can think of. What did I have him do? I had him write about how much he hated writing. He most likely didn't enjoy the process, definitely didn't take any pride in that work, and complained a good majority of the time when doing it. Though at the end of the day, he had a poem on paper, a tangible product of the work he put in.

Go write a poem you hate, go write a poem that you would rather burn than show the light of day. Write a poem that you think is pointless, that you think is dumb, that you cannot stand to look at. Be as angry and hate filled as you like, you'll still have a poem.

Most importantly, do it for yourself. If this so-called poet you idolized is so talented, why couldn't he have used his words to tell you why he doesn't want to speak anymore? What kind of poet can't use their words?

I wish you a great deal of luck and I truly hope that this was helpful enough to at least get you to try again. That's all that matters to me, so I hope that eventually that'll be all that matters to you too.

It's that time of the week (overdue - I apologize), the time for a new poetry prompt! I once again had a lovely time reading your previous poems and greatly look forward to this new assignment.

This week's prompt: blackout poetry! Take an existing piece of text, and use the words available to create a poem. I recommend doing so with a book or a magazine to have a simpler time, though any long block of text could do the trick in theory. If you have no physical pieces that you can mark up, digitally blocking out words is allowed as well.

Here is my example poem from a Queen magazine - with a transcription provided in case you have any difficulty reading.

highlighted text reads: "real life vastly limits the vision of overindulgent efforts to create , master the distortion of beautiful emotion and taste the tradition abandoning reinvention . this person the public ignored was a star - though they refused to demand space"

Good luck, and now is a good time to note that any previous prompts are open to add to as well, submissions under past promps will NOT be voided and WILL be read.

I will admit that I had you in mind when I put up this most recent prompt (I have you in mind at all points, but I digress.)

You seem to capture how people such as myself and your mother see you quite well, never quite predictable, and all the more endearing because of it. The life and color you breathe into your work never ceases to amaze me.

i am SO happy that everyone loves these prompts so much, and im even happier that people are picking up poetry for the first time, or picking it back up after a while! i really am touched that you all are passionate about this blog, passionate enough to pursue a creative hobby like poetry.

if you're new / rusty, please don't sweat it! you will improve to a point where you feel proud of your work, i promise. and! odds are that others wont feel the same way about your work as you do, and i know this for a fact because i adore all of the works you've submitted, even the ones where you're like "this is so bad, i tried, etc." you are your own worst critic, which is a cliche for a reason, bc its true! here's one of my first poems from back in like,,, november of 2022?

i fuckin hate it! i cringe looking back on it! odds are, you wont think its that bad at all, because youre not me, you dont have the idealised version of this poem in your head like i do.

tl;dr, dont ever feel discouraged enough to stop writing if you don't think you're good, cuz someone else will think it's fantastic

Ah! I suppose I should have expected this photo to crop up. Quite frankly, to say I am embarrassed would be a lie.

Thank you! Experimentation with fashion isn't something I do all that often, but it's always a hoot when I do. A majority of people view it as something to have a good laugh at, which is alright, but it's no joke! I enjoy many different styles!

Ah, the ol' scramble to get an idea down as quick as possible, I'm more than familiar.

Your love-centered poems are always a treat, and this is no different! The aspect that stands out most is the characterization of your heart, its existence in a vacuum, and the seemingly uncontrollable nature of it. Humanizing "inanimate objects" (obviously not entirely applicable to the human heart - but you understand my point) is always a favorite aspect in poems where it appears. Bravo!

You again, hello! You've asked if I like the song 'The Box' by this artist, to which I said I had only heard it in passing. What does "fw" mean? If my assumption that it means "do you like" then my answer is that I'm not sure I know enough about him to answer that.
