He sat in his lab. Replaying the message, torturing himself with the words, she truly believed he did not know what that was like? … Perhaps he didn’t. Perhaps he was a wraith, working towards a single goal. Without a soul or heart underneath. He knew, he would do it all again. Without hesitation. He knew, this was selfish. He knew what he was. But still, he returned her call.

Jonathan took a moment to take a drag off the cigarette sat between his hands, his breath shaky as he exhaled. He felt vulnerable, cold kinds caressing him.
That. And a number of… other conditioning methods. Have left me a corpse. A toy. Only existing. Only… safe. In his presence. Being away from it is torture. I am only- surviving with access to my cure to fight off the grip on my psyche.
Harley took a long time to respond. When he had first mentioned aversion therapy she was expecting- she didnt know what she was expecting. It made sense that Jeremiah would do that though, seeing as he had drugged and love bombed Jonathan when she tried to help him.

Katherine had just returned from a long night of patrol and trying to ascertain the whereabouts of Crane and Nygma when she sees the note, filling her with warmth, as if the sun peeking through clouds or the first sip of coffee in the morning. She felt the tension in her back slowly fade as she considered where she would take Harley for their date.
Pulling out her phone, she shoots the other woman a text:
[6:45:23] how do you feel about Titiana's? I'll pick you up. Early dinner and then maybe we can hit up amusement mile for some fun.
Katherine tossed her phone on her bed before heading to the bathroom to take a shower, and she suddenly realized she had no idea what to wear. How long had it been since she went on a proper date? Would she even remember how to act?
[7:01:20] Sorry, i just woke up, but sounds great! So...How formal should I dress? Like a dress and heels?
Harley glanced around her closer for somethinf she could ware, despite not knowing the dress code yet. She had seen the text as soon as she had woken up, abd was already buzzing with excitement.
Katherine couldn’t deny the way her heart flipped at the thought of seeing Harley dressed up, but that desire warred with her practicality, and she settle for a middle road.
[7:12:14] yes if you want, but pack comfy shoes for the games and walking around the Mile. Don’t want you blaming the heels when I kick your butt ;)

Harley giggled as she pulled out some practical shoes, simple red converse, and a dress.

Katherine bit her lip as she smiled. It felt….light. Easy. Like Kate was just a normal woman planning a date with someone she liked and not…whatever it is she had been lately. Her smile faded as memories from the past few months broke down her barricades, but the second message from the blonde helped her regain focus.
[7:16:05] it is, good thinking. Wear leggings? lol or just wear whatever you want. You look good in anything
Harley blushed, but luckily Kate couldn't see through the screen. This was probably the most normal she had felt in while.

Harley giggled again. She was just about bursting at the seems with excitement for tonight. But she still had just under eight hours left before the date itself. Maybe she should stall with makeup and hair? Or should she leave it down? Should she wear her glasses or her contacts? She had an idea, and smiled. An idea that might make Kate feel a bit better.

Katherine laughed a bit at the banter, filling Wiley’s bowl with food still wrapped in a towel. A jacket was a good idea, but what else? She walked to her closet, wishing she had some of Zatanna’s magic so she could make the perfect outfit float out of her wardrobe. Something that could handle the cold, but give her mobility, and still look chic. Suddenly, an idea hits her, and she smiles. Harley was going to love this.
A few hours later, Harley was washing the bleach out of her shower one more time while waiting for Kate to get there. She had made sure to wash her hair just as thoroughly. She had choosen to do simple red lipstick instead of full makeup, which ended up being the right choice. She turned the shower off and went to grab her cardigan, waiting on the couch by the door.
Kate knocked on Harley's door three times, feeling oddly nervous. Lack of practice, she decided. She adjusted her jacket, opting to wear a black pantsuit with a red undershirt, trying to subtly match Harley's signature colors. It felt odd to be out at this time, not dressed in her suit. Some part of her missed the mask she had been wearing, finding comfort in its anonymity. But, she reminded herself as she waited, she didn't need to hide from Harley.
Harley hopped up as soon as she heard knocking at her door. She ran over with a smile, opening the door. She had bleached her hair, so she looked more like herself. She wore a red dress with black tights and turtle neck underneath and a red purse. She looked over Kate's outfit, they were matching, and smiled ever brighter.
Hey! Ya look really nice.
So do you.
Kate says with a broad smile and a slight blush as she takes a moment to appreciate the way they both ended up matching each other. After a moment, Kate offers her arm to escort Harley.
Ready for our night on the town?

Harley laced her arm in Kate's so easily, it felt right. Harley couldnt help the buzzing excitement that ran through her. When was the last time she had been on a date? Too long.
I've never been ta Tatiana's. Is it good?
I haven’t been in such a long time, it’ll be like trying it for the first time. It came highly recommended, but I guess we’ll both find out.
Katherine walks them towards the cherry red corvette she drove here, opting to go all out for Harley tonight. She opens the door and motions for Harley to step in first.
Ladies first.
She says with a wink and a smile.
Harley giggles and gives Kate a kiss on the cheek before getting in the car.
Why thank ya hun. This is a really nice car!
Haven’t had a good excuse to take her out in a while, thought it would be fun tonight.
Kate slips behind the wheel, relishing in the way the engine revved to life, and drove them to the restaurant safely, resisting the urge to take the car for a joyride just yet.
The restaurant was full but without feeling crowded, that delicate balance most upscale restaurants navigated with ease, and Katherine was relieved when the maître dé led them to a secluded booth in the back of the restaurant, an even quieter spot where she could see everyone coming and going. Everything that happened lately left her hackles always raised to some degree, her teeth always on edge.
Still, she rallied to focus on the date. Pulling Harley’s seat out for her, Kate felt determined to make this a good night for the other woman.

Harley sits down and, weary of not being able to see the door but ignores it so she can have a good night. She smiles at Kate with a joy she hasn't seen in a while.
Im so happy we finally got ta have our date.
Kate smiles, finding the movement more and more natural the longer she is around the blonde.

She pauses a moment, clearing her throat as she picks up a menu, fiddling.
How-uh, how are you holding up? After…after everything?
Harley stills for a moment, almost becoming like a statue, and her eyes glass over for a moment. She blinks and looks down to her hand, flexing it about.
I've been...dealing with it I guess...Mah body is actin' weird sometimes. I'm stronger than before, I get angry easier...It's different, but nothin' I can't handle.
She shakes her head and puts on a concerned smile.
How 'bout ya hun? Are ya doin' okay?
Kate offers a sad smile, reaching over to cover Harley’s left hand with Kate’s right, gently rubbing a thumb over her knuckles.
You want to talk about it? The anger? I know you’re dealing with it, but I’m…I’m here, now. If you want to bounce ideas off someone or something. Hell, maybe we can go beat up some assholes together one night.
It is her turn to go quiet and still a moment as she considers how to answer her question.
I-…I’ve been better. Also a lot of anger. Probably not handling it the best but…anyways.
Just then, the waitress walks up to their table, asking for their orders. Saved by the bell, she thinks.
Harley kindly gives the waitress her order but doesn't look at her. The entire time her eyes are on Kate, watching, seeing, what Kate isn't saying in her body language. A pro of formerly being a psychiatrist.
When the waitress leaves, Harley tilts her head.
Kate...It was a Lazurus Pit.
Oh. Oh. Yeah, that- that makes sense.
Kate feels her cheeks flush for a moment out of embarrassment before her mind, thankfully, starts chewing on the fact. Enough time has passed that the worst effects of the Pit should have worn off by now, but then memories of the Pit underneath Arkham and the effects it had on Ivy replay in her mind.
Have you- have you been back there? I…I wonder if it’s one that’s unique. If the effects are still…maybe we can learn something from it?
I-I'd...rather not go back. Ya can go but I'm not ready yet.
She plays with the fabric of her sleeve. Her eyes wander around the restaurant until she's back watching Kate. She'd changed a little since that night and Harley couldnt help the anxiety that clawed its way up her throat. Did Kate secretly hate her for leaving? What did she mean by handling things in an unhealthy way? Was it her fault? How much had she hurt her?
I'm sorry.
No, no I don’t want to go without you.
Katherine reached out again to clasp Harley’s hand, squeezing it gently, brows furrowed in concern at Harley’s words.
Hey, sweetheart, d-don’t say that. You don’t-, there’s nothing to be sorry for. I-I’m the one who failed you. I’m the one who should be sorry.
I left. I did the most selfish thing anyone could ever do an' I left ya...An' now im bein' a coward an' not helpin' ya with somethin' I know I could help with because of mah own self made bad memories.
Old Harley could do this stuff. Old Harley could handle going back. Old Harley could handle all of this.
Harls, babe, it’s not selfish to want the pain to stop. That’s just being human. And you’re back, now, and things will be different, so stop beating yourself up. Besides…
Kate leans back, suddenly feeling the full weight of everything she had pushed aside slamming back into her. She runs her hands over her face and lets out a deep sigh.
Besides, I’m not really in a position to…okay, you know what? Let’s not worry about the Pit right now, okay? It’ll be there tomorrow, or a month from now. Tonight is about you, and me, and having fun.
She offers the best smile she can muster, hoping it’s convincing. The last thing either of them need is to spiral back to that night.

Harley nods once, then decides to scoot around the booth fo Kate's side. She let's go of Kate's hand and moves over, leaning into Kate's body with a slight pout.

Kate settles into their new seating arrangements with a small smile.
So, let’s talk about the future. What plans do you have, Harls? Not serious stuff but like…I don’t know. Have you and Ivy had a chance to reconnect? Maybe all three of us could go out one night?
Once Ivy’s plan is complete, maybe she’ll have time for them. Have the three of them ever been out together? What would that even look like? Kate could only open one door at a time.
No...Others have tried to reach out ta her, ta get her ta talk, but I dont have access ta talk ta her mahself so I wouldn't know if she'd even want ta talk.
Harley smiles.
I'd like fer the three of us ta go out together, though. I dont know how'd she feel 'bout it, but id like ta.
She’s…busy right now. I can’t even get in touch with her at the moment. But I think once the dust settles, she would…she misses you. She would probably love to see you again, like this.
Kate smiles at the thought of all three of them reunited, but the smile quickly fades as she remembers what waits for them outside the bubble they have made tonight.

Not any new friends, I dont really get ta socialize the way I used ta. I've gotten back inta sewin' though. It's nice, familiar.
Harley blushes lightly and turns her head, mumbling something about her future plans.

Katherine smiles and gently pushes a strand of hair behind Harley’s ear. Harely’s sewing was something small and real, like a sprout bursting through the soil - a signal that Harley was coming home to herself.
Harley's face flushes a deeper red when Kate tucks her hair behind her ear. She nervously giggles and smiles back at Kate.
Maybe I'll make ya somethin'. I've been makin' mah own clothes recently, so maybe i could make ya a suit or somethin'.
Harley mumbles under her breath again, and Kate can barely make out the word 'wedding'.
Wait, wedding? Is there a wedding happening? Whose is it?
Kate sputtered as she wracked her brain for any people she knows that would be likely candidates, lamenting in this moment letting her civilian ties lapse in recent weeks. Maybe it’s someone they know outside of the costumes, or maybe it’s someone Harley knows outside of Kate.

A blush rises to her own cheeks, and she is immensely grateful when the waitress arrives with their orders.

She offers quietly before turning to her pasta. After a moment of reflection, she is struck with the realization that this something she can’t remember having talked with Harley about before.
I didn’t realize you were the marrying type.
You probably forgot me mentioning it once. I've always wanted to get married but with my life its just not gonna happen.
Harley shrugged and ate her food with a small smile.

Katherine fought through her blush, trying to focus on her food. It was delicious, truly, but somehow she couldn’t pay attention to it the way she wanted. Her mind kept wandering to the idea of Harley getting her wedding one day.

Kate leans and playfully nudges Harley with her shoulder.
Aww thanks. Though if its this easy ta make ya blush then I wonder what else I can do ta make ya turn red.
Harley gives a playful wink back.

She regains her composure just enough to down her water. Collecting herself just enough, she finds her voice.

Kate turns back to her plate with a smile, feeling warm all over.

Harley laughs and pokes Kate's arm.
Fine, fine. Ahem. 'I'd rate this a 9/10. Its cooked perfectly and the flavor is superb.'
Harley laughs again, unable to hold a straight face.
Kate can’t stifle the laugh that escapes, and quickly kisses Harley on the cheek before returning to her food.

Kate flashes back to college. She was in and out of the friend group, but she remembers some of the parties Bruce would invite her to with all his friends, Harley included. Of course, out of everyone there, Kate remembered Harley the most.

Who would have thought we’d all end up…like this? Half of us trying to keep the other half from destroying the city and themselves. Maybe the signs were always there.
As always, Kate can’t keep her mind from growing pensive as she considers how much of someone’s future is dependent on fate and how much is dependent on free will. Does such a thing even exist? Were they not all set on tracks they could not see, barreling towards a conclusion they could not predict? The signs were there - of course they were. They always are. Her and Bruce squabbling like siblings; Jonathan and his notebook; Harley and the sadness behind her smile, even then. The signs were there, but they couldn’t read them then.
