What was a face? What was anything?

Welcome to the ask blog for Franklin Shepherd. He is the son of a navy soldier, enrolled when he is evacuated from England. His relationships around the island are minimal, but he is open to interaction with any characters/any ocs.

Lore:

13 years old

Skilled in hunting, fishing, and other survival skills due to his father training him to be fit for the military starting at 8. His mother didn’t have a say in his upbringing because he was his father’s only son.

Catholic

He has two older sisters.

Distaste for organized rule. He doesn’t like leaders because of their tendency to grow into dictators and believes everyone needs an equal voice.

Good with figuring out what plants are, what’s toxic, and what needs to be tended with what for wounds.

Rowdy and in later island events, has little to no self control and acts on what he thinks without considering consequences

Hates Jack. He goes to the same private school as the choir but is not a part of the choir.

What is he laughing at?

“shepherd.” a voice came from close by. it was less of a greeting, and more so a calling. the voice was familiar, but it was also distantly vague. the two didn’t talk much anyhow, only a few interactions before everything else began to fall into place.

it was everette. the boy looked different, worn and torn, in more ways than one. the scratches on his arms were more visible as the sun grew hotter against his skin as each day passed. his nose also had begun to heal in a crooked manner from not getting it checked by any of the medics on the island.

he stood there, and for once, the fleece of the lamb showed from where the seams of the wolf’s clothing frayed. he looked as if he was a being of hatred, but that he was some boy who was forced to swallow down all the detestation until there was little left to love. everette let a breath out.

“tell me about the flowers on the island. or, any plants really, doesn’t have to be native here. last time i checked, you still knew all about those topics. you still do, don’t you? i just”

the blonde boy paused, looking awkward and out of place in the colors of the sunset. he had to take his chances. he had to try with one of the few people who didn’t hate him yet, before he would inevitably ruin things eventually.

“i need to get my mind off things, before i lose it.” even if it was only for a moment.

“My dad was head of defense, or something like that. He never told us what he did for the military. You’re that kid with the gun, right? I hope nobody’s giving you too much trouble for that, but if they did I suppose you have a good solution to the issue on your hands. Nice meeting you. Not very many other kids are military, it’s nice to have something in common with someone.”

Good evening, Mr. Shepard.

I would just like to... clarify something about my outburst a while ago. My friends are allowed to have other friends and I am in no way... jealous of any friendship between you and Reeves. I fear I came off as, ugh- possessive, and I'd rather you not have the wrong idea about the kind of man I am. Ugh, I sounded like a schoolgirl. Consider this an... apology of sorts. Besides, I'm sure you know more about him than I do, you've know the fellow longer.

Anyways, as a sort of olive branch, I- I would like to ask if you'd want to come foraging with me. See, I'm- well this embarrassing, but I don't know much about plants. Please understand it's not my fault! I- hmph, never-mind, that's on a need-to-know basis. Just- I know you know a lot about this sort of thing and I- I would appreciate the help and the company.

Did you ever garden with your mom, or were you not allowed to?

“i was usually too busy with tasks that my father had given me. he kept me as occupied as he could so i didn’t step foot in the garden, but i did it despite his wishes. i learned a lot from my mom. she’d know everything about the plants in this place.”

Why would you join Jack's tribe if you hate him

i figured this ask was easier to ask as not franklin, since he isn’t there in the plot line yet lol. he doesn’t, to make the answer very brief. he doesn’t choose to join, but he is instead forced by jack to join. it was an exchange for his life. he still hates jack, but i’ve found that when your life is on the line, you’ll do what it takes to survive. if you have any other questions, i’d be happy to answer them.

What is something you don't like about the island, then something you do like about the island?

“i quite like the people that i’ve met. they’re all so…different? i wish i had met them under different circumstances. i’m sure they’re much different when they’re back at home. nicer, maybe?

i can’t say i like jack very much. or ralph. they’re both loud and wrong most of the time. i don’t think they’re going to get everyone off of the island alive, but i don’t think that’s their goal. i think they just want themselves home alright.”

what was your dad like?

“he was…. in charge of the army’s strategic planning. he was a tough father to have, i’m not quite sure that he knew how to love a kid like a dad should. we were cadets to him. he used to wake me up every morning at 5 am and wouldn’t let me sleep until 9 pm. he trained me like he would a soldier. i do miss him, though. i suppose people were right when they said you never know what you have until it’s gone.”

Do you have a favorite book?

“um… i’m not as well read as others, like ernst. it took me a while to learn how to read, actually. i like the italian by ann radcliffe. my niece’s governess gave it to me a while ago from her personal library. it was good, i guess.”

What's your favorite flower, or just favorite plant,?

“all of the flowers here are rather repetitive. they’re the same boring things over and over again. my favorites back home were sweetpea flowers. grapevines are probably my favorite plants, although they sort f grow out of control. my mom knows a lot about plants, she had a really thick book full of types of plants and she taught me a lot. i wish i had brought it with me, it might have been helpful here.”
