Welcome to Dead Bird Studio! This is an askblog for characters from A Hat in Time act 2 but as humans! Feel free to send your fanmail or junk to whichever is your favorite director or even send something to one of the stars from their movies! Whoever those "stars" are...Seriously. DJ Grooves: Mostly we get letters in the mail since it’s the easiest form of communication! But feel free to pop over and chat if you have the time, darling! Usually we read them inbetween filming...

When’s the next Bird Movie Awards?

DJ Grooves: The last movie awards happened a few months ago after we met that little Hat diva.... and usually our films take quite a looong time to make! But that usually depends on what type of film it is-!

DJ Grooves: Oh I just adore my little fan club! They’re all so sweet! And the actors do their best, no matter the situation! It’s a lot to admire actually....

The Condutor: Aye don’t really have an opinion on any of ‘em like Grooves does, ‘cept Reece maybe; ‘e’s a good lad. Known ‘im fer years. Trust ‘im like part of me family actually...

Nanki giggled at Grooves’ comment, lowering her voice to talk to him. “You like being loud though don’t you? Maybe not as loud as Conductor though..” She put a hand over the ear facing where the loud noise was coming from. She didn’t seem to like that.

“He’s.. really loud, heheh.”

“It’s okay. I’ve probably already heard them all anyways.” She giggled. “Mommy isn’t too good at not saying bad words sometimes. Big brother tends to cuss a bit too.” She shrugged. “I just know I can’t say them.”

The DJ hums and nods in agreement before turning the handle and pushing the door open, the noises from inside become almost deafening and he winces before glancing down at Nanki. He holds his hands over the childs ears as they walk in to save her poor little head from the ruckus. 

He knows there should be some noise cancelling earphones around here somewhere...

Just as he spots a pair not too far away, a loud megaphone enhanced voice calls out across the room.

“CUUUT!! STOP THE MUSIC- WHO THE PECK OPENED THAT DOOR?!”

Grooves smiles and removes his hands from Nankis head, the loud music from before getting replaced with murmurs and voices from the various stage hands and actors spread out across the room.

“Hello, darling!” Grooves sing songs, waving towards where the Conductor sits in his directing chair. “I hope you don’t mind our interuption but we have a little guest who wanted to meet you!” 

The Conductor in question leans over the back off his chair, megaphone in hand, with a raised eyebrow and glasses proped on the end of his nose. He looks annoyed but upon focussing on the little child by the DJ’s side a small smile sneaks its way onto his face. 

“Oh! Well uh- sure! Come on over lassie!”

Have you guys even been out of the studio?

The Conductor: Aye visit me grandkids often and own a lil cottage on the outskirts a town where ah live. Having a room in the studio don’t mean none tae me.

The Conductor: Whadaya mean ye haven’t left the studio? Wot the peck ‘ave you been doing?!

DJ Grooves: Uhm...working, darling? 

The Conductor: NO EXCUSE! We’re gettin’ you some fresh air!

DJ Grooves: But-

The Conductor: No buts! Out!! Now!!

THEYRE BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!!!!!!

The Conductor: We’ve been thinkin’ about…aye dunno wot you’d call it but uh “life blogging” I guess you could call it? Uh- yeah summit like that where we give ye updates and add stuff ta the blog inbetween ya fanmails, it won’t be as quiet then. 

DJ Grooves: Most will probably be done via our phones so we don’t have to nag Reece to update them every time! Any thoughts on that, darlings? Any suggestions on what you’d like to see?

Nanki grinned. “Okay. Do I need to be quiet?” She walked up beside him, head tilted. “I wouldn’t wanna mess him up.” She curiously thought when her mom would show up. She guessed she didn’t need to just yet since they were going to go in and meet Cecil..

Although it would be kinda funny to see both of their surprise when she teleported in.

With a sly smile Grooves nods and puts a finger up to his lips to motion that yes; they’d need to be quiet, but with the cheeky look that crosses his face straight after it seems like he had other things in mind.

He pushes the door open with gusto and holds it for Nanki to follow through.

“Well yes, we do technically need to be quiet, darling, but...well...I’m not going to be, heh.” Despite what he says he does however close the door quietly behind them once they’re both on the other side.

Further down the hall loud but muffled music and what seems to be gunshot sound affects play in the distance, multiple shouting voices also leak through the walls and Grooves grimaces slightly when he hears a swear or two through the music. He brings Nanki over to where the sounds are loudest and turns to her whilst reaching for the door knob.

“I appologise in advanced if you hear anything crude, little darling, the Conductor’s movies are quite...crash...to say the least...”

Nanki smiled a little. “It’s okay, most people are kinda.. weirded out at her shadow half anyways, she’s used to it.” She says this but Zana definitely thinks different.

Nanki giggled at his joke. “Oh, it’s an accent..? I didn’t know, accents confuse me. They sound really funny though. My friend thinks they’re really cute though! She’s nice.” She smiled.

Nanki nodded, taking his hand and reaching up to move some of her hair out of her face. It must take hours to get that done in the morning.

Grooves just nods along to the girls words and leads her to the reception as she fixes her hair. The walk takes a little while because he’d been taking them in the opposite direction when giving her the tour but not too long later he pushes open and holds the door for Nanki to walk through. Once she has he follows her in and stops infront of the receptionist desk where Reece sits reading a newspaper.

He chats to the older man for a second before nodding and refocussing on Nanki whilst pointing over to the Conductor’s side of the studio.

“Cecil is filming right now, darling, but I’m sure we can sneak in for a little bit just to say hi! He won’t mind if it’s not too long.” He finishes with a smile and starts walking over to said door, looking over his shoulder to make sure the young girl is following him.

Nanki giggled. “I haven’t seen your relationship.. dynamic I think it’s called? But I’m sure it’s cuuuuute.” She grinned. God bless this child. “Ah, mommy should know that I need her if I think about it. Mommy isn’t uhm.. fully human. She’s half shadow like big brother is so she’s got really cool powers n stuff!”

“Yeah, I do wanna meet your boooyfrieeend.” She giggled. “I haven’t seen any of his movies but.. I think he sounds cool. His voice is funny!” She smiled.

With a fake gasp Grooves puts a hand over his mouth and laughs.

“Oh yes, darling I agree! I’d say we are very cute! Whilst the Condutor looks like a meanie he’s quite kind and affectionate when you get to know him!” He tilts his head at what Nanki says about her mother and presses a finger to his bottom lip in thought. His head tilts the other way as he answers.

“Not fully human? Thats...huh. We’ve been seeing more and more ‘not human’ people around the studio over the past few months it’s....quite strange. I bet it’s normal for you with her being your mother though! We at the stupio are just...not used to non-human and magical beings if you get what I mean, darling, heh...”

Grooves crosses his arms and nods, eyes closed and mouth upturned as he thinks about Cecil and how he agrees with what Nanki is saying.

“Yeah he’s very cool. He has a bit of a temper though so it’s a miracle if he can keep his cool! HAH.” He snorts and shakes his head. “Hmm dumb jokes aside, he has a scottish accent, darling, it’s why he sounds like that and if I can be honest with you I find it absolutely adorable.”

With a dreamy sigh he holds out his hand for Nanki to take once again.

“Shall we go find him, little darling?”

“Heyyy, didn’t you tell me to speak my mind? Don’t cover your mouth like that!” She put her hands on her hips with a little cat-like grin. “Don’t tell me to do things if you’re not gonna. Plus your laugh is nice. So.”

Nanki looked confused for a second before smiling. “Ooooh! I know what you mean. Mommy likes to date women and guys, and so does big brother.. so it’s okay! Mommy’s aaaaalways said that people can be what they wanna be.” She giggled. “Mommy has brought some pretty ladies home before too that she planned to date but something came up. Er, nothing bad! Usually they just have second thoughts and mommy is okay with that.”

“Oh, mommy will try to flirt with you but if you tell her not to she won’t. She’s had others try to force romance onto her before an’ she didn’t like it one bit.” She smiled. “So she wouldn’t want to do the same to you.”

Grooves removed his hand only to stick his tongue out at the little girl’s grin. If she was going to be cheeky then he could be too! She was definitely right though and he was glad she knew it but sometimes embaressment could just creep up on him out of nowhere...

Her response however is very reasuring and he nods along happily whilst listening; bending down and resting his hands upon his knees. He ends up giving a warm smile before standing upright again and clasps his hands together excitedly.

“Oh! Well I’m glad thats settled then! Having to explain to so many people I only like guys can get very, very repetitive. I’ll make sure to let her know if I’m uncomfortable...” Grooves snorts and looks to the side. “Usually just carting Cecil around with me everywhere on my arm gives people a hint...” He says offhandly, almost a whisper. 

With a shake of his head he looks back towards Nanki and claps his hands again.

“Anyway- yes, I’d love to meet your mother, little darling! Besides, there aren’t really any other of my rooms in use right now for filming so if you’d like I could walk you back to the reception? I’m sure we could go find the Conductor as well if you still wanted to meet him?”

The girls’ words were incredibly worrisome but Grooves tried not to let it show on his face, continuing to nod as she spoke and doing his best to look supportive. It was always horrible to hear about the bad home lives of people, especially young children, it just made him want to bundle her up in a blanket and tell her everything would be okay, but he knew she was strong and he wouldn’t need to worry about her. Nanki would be okay in the long run, just as long as she had her mother alongside her…hm…speaking of.

“I’m surprised your mother isn’t with you right now, darling, where is she?” He questions, free hand rising to his lips in thought. “This studio is quite large and I’d hate for you to get lost, or even hurt from wandering around on your own! I’d love to meet her and tell her what a sweet little girl she has! We don’t often have visitors so it’d be a nice change of pace….” 

He can’t help but chuckle at her meek finish and ends up patting her head again, smile continuous.

“Oh don’t you worry your little head, darling, you can talk as much as you like. It’s usually me who does all of that around here! And besides you’ll need to learn to speak your mind if you’re gonna go into show buisness! Being a star means being confident! Out spoken!-” He raises his free hand above him into the air and shifts into a outlandish stance, making sure to keep hold of Nanki’s hand in his other, however. “Don’t forget dramatic~” Grooves laughs. “But don’t worry because you can always start out small and work your way to the top, little star! And so can your brother! There’s nothing stopping you from living out your most wildest dreams other than how far you can push your imagination!”

If they were both currently in a movie of their own; Grooves’ eyes and smile would definitely be sparkling and shining in confidence with how proud he’s looking down at Nanki. 

This mans admiration certainly knows no bounds.

Nanki smiled. “Oh, probably working. Mommy trusts me to stay safe.. plus she can just teleport to me if she needs to. Plus I’m with you, I won’t get lost! And I do kinda wanna meet Conductor too..” She giggled.

Nanki’s eyes practically sparkled when he gave his motivational speech to her, eyes widening and the stars in her eyes becoming more prominent. “I really do wanna make more people happy by becoming a star! I think if I was in the show business I could make a lot of people happy faster! Mommy says that if you smile enough you can make others happy. You smile a lot too I see.” She giggled. “It’s a pretty smile too!” Compliment after compliment, there’s no stopping her!

“Uhm.. When you get done giving me the coolest tour ever I can see if mommy can come n’ meet you. She might flirt with you though.” She giggled. “She’s very flirty when it comes to cute guys.”

Grooves couldn’t help but tilt his head at the little girls words when she mentioned ‘teleportation’, what on earth could she mean? She couldn’t surely mean actual teleportation, right? That was absured! No such thing existed, it was only science fiction! He considers interupting and asking her about it but instead keeps quiet and continues to listen to the rest of her chatter. 

He answers one thing at a time whilst continuing to lead her around the studio.

“Well, it’s easy to make poeple happy of course! You don’t have to be a star to do that, but yes, I get what you mean, darling. It’s definitely rewarding seeing people smile because of something you’ve done or made...” At her compliment he can’t help but laugh and subconsciously holds a hand over his mouth at the sudden outburst. “Oh sweetheart you flatter me! Please, I should be the one giving out compliments, that’s like 50% of my job, you’re doing all of the work around here for me!” 

With a snicker he comes to a stop at a differen’t movie set which is completely empty and void of any props or people but an awkward ‘ahhh’ leaves his mouth at Nanki’s last words.

“Oh, uh, darling, I appreciate the gesture and I definitely wouldn’t mind meeting your mother but, hm...how do I say this? I’m not into the ladies if you get what I mean? And I’m with the Conductor! I don’t think he would appreciate it if he saw someone flirting with me! He might get jealous!” He leans down and lowers his voice to barely above a whisper. “And whilst that would be hilarious, I would reeeally rather not make things awkward around here...but we can go see him later if you’d like!”

Nanki nodded. “..I just wish I had a dad. Mommy says the guy that was supposed to be my dad is a meanie, he scratched her in inni.. inno.. bad places she said.” She pouted a little. “I don’t get it though! I don’t know why people would want to be mean to mommy. She’s so nice and pretty!” She looked to Grooves, eyes practically sparkling. “My mommy is the bestest mommy. You should meet her sometime.” She smiled.

“Hehe, yeah, mommy says she’s proud of me aaaaaall the time. She’s just happy I’m her daughter. And I’m happy she’s my mommy.” She smiled. “My real parents aren’t nice, I don’t know them totally but.. mommy does. You’d have to ask her. I jus’ know they’re mean.”

She looked at the set, smiling and eyes sparkling. “That’s so coooool.. I wish I could be a star someday! That seems so fun. Big brother deserves to be a star too, he’s really good at his guitar. It’s an electric one.” He’s definitely not as good as she’s saying but she’s a kid that loves her big brother. “Oh, I’m talking too much again.” She covers her mouth with the hand that’s not being held. “Sorry.”

Grooves leans his head on his hand as he listens tentitively and smiles brightly at her answer. 

“Why thank you, darling, It’s nice to hear you enjoy my range! But ah- yes, The Conductor’s movies do tend to dip into the PG territory now and again, sorry if you heard anything….unsavory….he does have quite a mouth on him.” 

He watched amused as she happily chats about what movies she’d like to be in and what roles she wants to play and he can’t help but chuckle when she finally stops. It’s always so amazing to listen to children when they talk about their interests, they always become so animated and excited!

But when the child’s mood suddenly turns sour and her words become troublesome; Grooves’ smile starts to fade. He slips his hand back into his lap and pouts slightly at her new question, eyebrows furrowing in dissapointment.

She’s being bullied? Oh dear….The poor little star….How dare they!

With a small shuffle forward, Grooves leans in closer to her so they’re eye to eye. He sighs once before speaking, tone serious but encouraging.

“Alright, little darling, you listen to me! Don’t you pay attention to any of those nasty bullies, their words don’t matter none! They just say those kinds of things because they’ve been taught wrong and they just want to make you feel bad but you have the right idea though! How you look shouldn’t matter to anyone but you!” 

He folds his arms and sits back for a second before pointing to one of the vitiligo marks on his face.

“I used to have kids bully me because of my skin tone and especially these  markings when I was younger, yes, and adults are still incredibly rude to me but I don’t pay them no mind, their words don’t matter because I know I’m beautiful the way I am and so are you! So do your best to try and ignore them, sweetie, they’re not worth your time.” 

He looks to the side in thought for a second before looking back to her.

“If they still bully you though….make sure to tell your mother, or a teacher or someone you know you can trust. You really don’t deserve such mean words at such a young age!”  

Once he’s finished talking, Grooves gives Nanki a small pat on the head and stands with a smile, he holds out his hand for her to grab.

“How about I show you around, hm? With how interested you are in movies I bet you’d love to see how they’re made!”

When he pointed to one of the markings on his face, Nanki reached up to touch it softly, as if it felt different from what she’s touched before.. “..Well I think you look nice with them. You already look cute, honestly I couldn’t see you any other way.” She smiled a little. “They’re kinda pretty in a way.”

She giggled at the pat, and took his hand. “Sure, I’d love to!” She hopped up, looking at his hand. So big compaired to hers! “My mommy already knows about the bullies too. She says she took care of it. They haven’t been coming to school anymore. Maybe they got exp.. expeel.. uhm.. kicked out?” She smiled. “I hope so. I don’t wanna deal with them anymore. They’re mean.”

After a few seconds she hugged onto his arm. Maybe she just found comfort in being beside him. “…you’re so cool.” She giggled. Aw.

Nanki’s touch to his face had surprised him but he didn’t mind, she was just a small child after all and she wasn’t doing any harm. Her compliments also caused him to smile and he gave her a quick, heartfelt “Thank you!” in response. 

Grooves started to lead her around the set as she spoke about her mother and he nodded every so often to let her know he was listening, giving off a small smirk as she had trouble pronouncing the word. 

She was so cute! 

“Oh that’s good, little darling, I’m glad your mother was able to sort it out for you! Having parents like that around to help is always good....” He had no idea about the actual truth either but it was probably for the best.

When Nanki hugs his arm and tells him he’s cool he....stops. His heart almost melts at her giggle and it reminds him of the times when the Conductor brings in his giggly grandchildren, they were all so adorable! It almost makes him want children of his own...almost.

“Oh no, darling- it’s definitely you whose so cool! Staying strong even against all those bullies is something to be proud of! I’m proud of you! And I bet your mother is too! You better not forget it okay?!” 

Grooves continues walking on until they come across an almost empty set, people in suits and glasses are moving heavy looking objects around in the background out of sight and yellow tinted lights hang up above. 

“Now lets see.... over here is my most recent movie set! It’s for a film set on the moon! It’s why there’s so many “green screens” around because we can edit in the background once we’ve finished filming!”
