Perry almost jumped when she heard his voice. "I get that. Everything is always changing, and it's like the moment you think you've got it handled the finish line seems to shift 10 feet" She still wasn't sure what to do about her magic, or her family, or how to apologize to him for leaving. It was all just. Too much

"I am... not entirely sure that this is a wise course of action," Fergus said nervously, staring down at what appeared to be a mushroom. "It could be poisonous."

Perry picked up a big stick, grinning ear to ear, but didn't move to poke it. "That's why we use something that's not our hands. That way if it is poison, it's not on us."

The mushroom in question was fantastical colors and seemed out of place. They'd found on an adventure in the woods, and she wasn't about to leave until she knew if it was useful or not. "Well, what do you suggest we do with it?"

In what way are they hypocritical? I don’t doubt you’re being honest, but I guess I’ve just never seen anyone but the older generation spouting off their ideas. I’d love to know how the youths have handled that, if they’re any different.

"The youth of Auradon would like to say they're different from their parents, but so many of them are exactly the same. Look at the Costas. Audrey was supposed to be queen, and she was ready to completely get rid of all the VKs. Even further than that, they have such a systemic idea of perfection and what it means to be Good, that even people like me are seen as not good enough for the system. I had a friend completely drop me and tear me down because her parents didn't like that I was a servant girl. Most of the royal kids at Auradon wouldn't have even acknowledged my existence if it weren't for the fact that I was enrolled, and Ben is nice to me."

Sounds like you’ve led a tough life. I’m curious, though: have you met anyone here who challenges your own prejudices, points of view, etc.?

"I... don't know. I've always been an outside observer to the pristine nature of Auradon royalty, and that's where I've learned that a lot of their ideals are very hypocritical."

Who do you think make for better friends, AKs or VKs? Why?

"Honestly... probably the VKs. Like, don't get me wrong, my friends from Auradon are great, but they also have so many internalized prejudices and ideas. VKs get that it's not all sunshine and roses all the time."

Would you say you have many friends here? And if so, who would you say are the closest?

"I... don't know, anymore. I used to have so many friends, but then my dad pulled me out. I feel like I don't know anyone anymore."

Open Starter: Heads Up!

Better than nothing. James happily took to the skies on his board, enjoying the feeling as he flies– occasionally doing some pretty reckless stunts, unsurprisingly. It gave him a chance to clear his head a bit and think things over.

Was he really like his mother? He’d seen her at Family Day, even though he had no idea how she even knew about it or why she’d decided to go. And she’d told him that she saw herself in him. But no… no, of course not, right? She had up and abandoned him, and his sister, and his father– she would never come back. She didn’t want them. He would never…

…but he had that same instinct. To wander, to move– to sail. He wanted to go, to keep exploring and just get out. The same drive she herself had… it was within him, too.

Lost in his thoughts, he almost doesn’t see someone crossing his path, and barely swerves out of the way with a yelp. “Whoa! Sorry!”

Slowly, he lowers himself and closes the sail, climbing off his board and picking it up. “I didn’t hit you, did I?”

The world was not going her direction today. Or any day since she'd been back really. Perry hated that she saw him. She was just trying to get away for a minute, and of course she runs right into him.

But he's sailing, and she misses that more than anything right now. So she stops and watches, imagining herself up there with the wind in her hair. Free.

With a shake of her head to clear her mind of the fantasy, she starts back towards the castle. He almost hits her, and she almost wishes he'd actually done it. "No, I'm all good. You've got terrible aim if you were trying though." The joke was terrible, but she chuckles hoping he'll find it at least slightly funny.

“Uh, are you sure?” Ben jokes a bit, opening his arms to offer her a hug. “You might wanna confirm that, because right now I’m not entirely sure myself. It’s been a long time.”

Perry sighs and mentally adds him to the food watch list. “I will never understand Auradon Royalty and their inability to get things done without going to extremes.”

She links her arm in his and starts to pull him to the cafeteria, “Come on, let’s get you some lunch, and maybe we can sit down and talk about all the crazy stuff that’s probably happened to both us since I last saw you.”

Ben laughs as she pulls him a long, stumbling momentarily but saving his footing and walking with her. “Okay, okay, I get your point.”

But he knows perfectly well that she’s not about to let him go and she will drag him all the way if she has to, so he doesn’t argue any further than that as they walk to the cafeteria. “There’s no ‘maybe’ to that, though, Perry. It’s been a while, we need to catch up. I’ve missed you, too, y’know.”

Perry takes a deep breathe and weighs her options. It would probably be safer to not tell him, but this is Ben. And she desperately needed someone to talk to about what had happened. "Got a boyfriend, kinda broke up with said boyfriend cause my dad pulled me out of school when the barrier came down. Haven't really talked to him since. Dad told me some really weird family news about my mom. Y'know the one who's supposed to dead? Apparently she's been on the Isle this whole time. He still won't tell me who she is though. It's a point of contention, actually."

She smiles sheepishly as the silence hangs for a second, "What about you?"

Perry sat down across from the stranger. Her coffee mug made a resounding thud as it and her head made contact with the table. “I’m not a princess, and if you call me that again I’ll find that apple and sho-”

She took a deep breath, sat back up and took a sip, “Sorry, I’ve been awake since before dawn. The washing machines broke down, again, and apparently the only one who can fix them also has to be in class in an hour.”

“Oh, no. No need to apologize. In fact, that tirade you almost went on would still have counted as the best treatment I’ve received since I arrived here,” he replied, very much at ease with her already in spite of her simmering temper (or perhaps because of it).

“You would think with the weigh they throw their weight around here that the powers that be could do better than contracting a student to do their dirty work, wouldn’t you? I pity your misuse - and salute your bravery. I would have begun shoving apples hours ago, in your position.” And he would have, no doubt. Memories of hot nights spent creating a fake breeze for his adoptive father shoved their way forward, reminding Malik of his own irritability when deprived of niceties like sleep and food. He had started, and won, more than a few fights on days like those.

But–he was well-rested, and his classes wouldn’t start for a few more hours, their times having been staggered to accommodate the influx of new students. An opportunity arose that he wasn’t altogether sure he wanted to let go.

“What if I could find a way for you to sleep through class without missing any marks in it? Would that brighten your dark day any?”

"Well, I was staff before I was a student," She concedes, "and I'm sorry to hear you haven't been given the 'Warm Auradon Welcome'." Her air quotes are half hearted, but sitting down was starting to drain her her anger and replacing it with tired. "The people here are... great, when they try. But it's really hard to be accepted sometimes in all honesty."

His offer definitely piqued her interest. Sleep sounded amazing. "Very possibly. What did you have in mind?"

The peace of Malik’s morning was broken, irreparably, when his morning cup of chai was walked in on–specifically, by a very angry looking young blonde. Malik met her eyes before sighing, setting aside his cup and flipping his book on Auradonian history closed.

“You look troubled,” he said, voice light if somewhat sardonic. “Who stole your apple this morning, princess?”

Perry hugs him tightly with a smile on her face. She hadn’t seen him since she left Auradon Prep, and it was good to see him. “I don’t know, you feel pretty real.” She lets him go, and starts to check him over, “You’ve been eating, right? I know you have a tendency to overwork yourself.”

Ben smiles as he hugs her back tightly, laughing when she pulls away and starts checking him over, reaching down to straighten out the end of his jacket. “No, yeah, I-- well. I’ve been doing better than I’ve been known to do in the past.”

“Well, I was, until the recent lock-in some of the other royalty of Auradon put in place during a meeting to get a satisfactory answer out of me about how I specifically planned on responding to Audrey.”

That had been many sleepless nights and more than a few skipped meals trying to resolve without having to do anything more-- it wasn’t right that they expected him to punish her when her parents had done so enough. Yes, what she did was awful, but he was caught in a difficult place, with villains and heroes alike watching that decision.

Closed Starter: Not This Again (Perry/Tayen/Celena)

Perry was hiding, plain and simple. She had been doing good since she got here, staying in the shadows, keeping her magic to herself. But then the sparks started coming out of her hands, and she couldn't stop them.

It started when she saw some jocks picking on a lower classman. Rage boiled through her system, and before she could stop it, hot purple sparks were shooting out of her hands. The only logical solution was to run away, find somewhere to calm down, figure out how to make it stop, right?

Footsteps sounded in the hallway near where she sat. "Don't come any closer! I'm. I've got hot materials, and I don't want to burn you!"
