The party wasn’t exactly one that Les was used to. Hell, he wasn’t the type of guy to go to a party at all. *Especially* not on the East side. Don’t get him wrong, he didn’t have a problem with greasers in the slightest, but he definitely didn’t do their kind of parties. Because now, he was standing in the corner of a loud, stuffy room that was starting to smell, tugging on the collar of his shirt and wishing he’d stayed home and read a book while listening to his record player.

“Uh, what makes you say that?”

Les was quiet for a minute. "Well, I guess now that I think about it, I really.. *Don't* know anyone here." He gave a nervous chuckle and looked around the room, sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck. "Hell, I don't even know why I came here in the first place, actually."

After a beat, Les spoke up. “I actually *did* try once. Tried a cigarette, I mean. I hated it, I almost threw up because I gagged on the smoke so much.”

He internally cringed at that last part. Did he *really* need to share that bit? Sure, it was true, but it really wasn’t necessary..

that’s okay. they ain’t for everyone. it’s like how my little brother hates cherry stuff. I love cherry flavored stuff but that don’t mean he needs to love it.

“Exactly!” Les nodded in agreement. “And just because I love chocolate, that doesn’t mean my dad needs to like it.” He paused. “Then again, my dad’s a dentist, so he’s kind of got a reason to not be a big fan of sweets..”

“Uh, kind of? I grew up on the West side, but we never had as much money as some of the other families that live over there. It’s a weird spot, honestly.” Les rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.

“So that means you live on this side of town, right?” Les’s posture started to noticeably loosen, with him beginning to lean a bit against the wall on his shoulder, turned to face Mary a little better.

Les seemed to realize something. “Hey, uh, you never said why you were here. You asked what brought me here, but I don’t know what brought *you* here.” He gestured to Mary with his cup.

Les blinked at that. "Wait, hold on, aren't you the same age as-?" He stopped himself. "Oh, never mind. I don't think anyone here is 21 anyway.." He mumbled, wondering why he even bothered questioning the underage drinking happening around him. It wasn't exactly his business anyway.

Now that he thought about it, he was now paranoid that the punch he was drinking had been spiked.. God, he hated his mind.

Les sighed. “You’re right, maybe I do..” He mumbled. He sagged against the wall, looking at the partying teens around him. “God, this *really* isn’t my scene..”

He closed the door behind her and walked around to the driver’s side, fishing his car keys out of his pocket, and getting in and buckling his seat belt.

He put the key in the ignition and turned over the engine, which roared to life. He started to back out of the driveway. “Okay, which way is your house?”

Les walked her out to his car and gently let her go to open the car door. “Alright, get in.” He said, helping her into the passenger’s seat.

He closed the door behind her and walked around to the driver’s side, fishing his car keys out of his pocket, and getting in and buckling his seat belt.

He put the key in the ignition and turned over the engine, which roared to life. He started to back out of the driveway. “Okay, which way is your house?”

"..Oh God." Les muttered, groaning and smacking his head lightly on the steering wheel. He sighed then lifted his head up to look at Mary. "I've got some money. Do you wanna call someone on a payphone? Maybe they could come pick you up."

oh I remember now! go to the gas station then drive a little then turn into the neighborhood by that.

Les sighed. “Thank God..” He muttered then continued to back out of the driveway and onto the street.

They rode in silence for a few minutes and he drove to the gas station like Mary told him to, then continued driving.

Les looked to the neighborhood coming up. “Is this the one?” He asked Mary.

Les nodded then tried the door, which *did* end up being unlocked. He nudged open the door, and helped Mary inside.

He looked into the living room and saw a younger boy on the couch, watching TV. He must have been Mary’s little brother. He looked up and made eye contact with Les, who currently had the boy’s older sister draped against his side, definitely not sober. They stared at each other for a moment.

“..Uh, there *is* an explanation for this, I swear.”

“Okay, she’s completely gone. I should get her to bed.” He helped her down the hall to her bedroom.

The party wasn’t exactly one that Les was used to. Hell, he wasn’t the type of guy to go to a party at all. *Especially* not on the East side. Don’t get him wrong, he didn’t have a problem with greasers in the slightest, but he definitely didn’t do their kind of parties. Because now, he was standing in the corner of a loud, stuffy room that was starting to smell, tugging on the collar of his shirt and wishing he’d stayed home and read a book while listening to his record player.

After a beat, Les spoke up. “I actually *did* try once. Tried a cigarette, I mean. I hated it, I almost threw up because I gagged on the smoke so much.”

He internally cringed at that last part. Did he *really* need to share that bit? Sure, it was true, but it really wasn’t necessary..

Now that he thought about it, he was now paranoid that the punch he was drinking had been spiked.. God, he hated his mind.

Les walked her out to his car and gently let her go to open the car door. “Alright, get in.” He said, helping her into the passenger’s seat.

Les nodded then tried the door, which *did* end up being unlocked. He nudged open the door, and helped Mary inside.

He looked into the living room and saw a younger boy on the couch, watching TV. He must have been Mary’s little brother. He looked up and made eye contact with Les, who currently had the boy’s older sister draped against his side, definitely not sober. They stared at each other for a moment.

Les felt his smile widen as he felt himself start to move to the beat of the music, looking around a bit. "I guess this isn't so bad. We're a little closer to the speakers."

Les let out a little cheer of his own, the grin on his face wide like a little kid’s.

*Mary offers him a drink*

Les looked at the drink with narrowed eyes, then slowly took it from her. He took a sip from it and grimaced. He shook his head fervently as he swallowed. “Nope, nuh uh, never again-”

Les looked at Mary. “Heck no! This stuff tastes awful!” He sighed. “I’m sorry.. Guess I’m not a beer person either..”

Les gave a small, apologetic smile. "I think I'll just stick to coffee from here on out."

“Thanks.” He sighed and just sort of stood there for a moment. He had went and killed the mood, or at least thats what he thought.

Les blinked in surprise. “Oh- Uh, no, no I don’t.”

Les cocked his head slightly at that. “Why’s that?”

His cheeks flushed red at that. “I- Uh- Well-” He looked away quickly. “Uh, thank you.”

Les chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of his reddened neck. He wasn’t used to girls talking to him like that.. He kind of liked it, if he was being honest.

He looked at Mary again, his face still a bit red. “Uh, no, actually, I haven’t.”

“‘Something cute’?” Les asked, clearly not knowing what exactly she meant.

“Huh..” Les said to himself, softly. “Thanks, I guess..” He thanked her quietly, staring down at his own feet as he said it.

Les gave a nervous chuckle. Right. She was drunk. She might even mean half of the things she was saying anyway, at least not fully..

“Okay, I think you’re drunk.” He said, readying himself to catch her at any moment.

"Okay, and down we go!" He managed to stand her up right. "Yep, you're drunk.." He muttered.

*she wraps her arms around his shoulders to support herself*

"Uhm, I think you've had enough.." He gingerly took the drink from her hand and sat it on a nearby table.

“Uh, thank you- Now, did you ride with someone here? I think we need to get you home-”

“Of course you did..” He muttered, then sighed. “I can drive you home, if you want.”

“Alright, let’s get you out of here.” He sat her up straighter and slung her arm across hid shoulder. He helped her out of the party, and he could practically *feel* the eyes on him.

Les walked her out to his car and gently let her go to open the car door. “Alright, get in.” He said, helping her into the passenger’s seat.

*she sits and giggles again*

He closed the door behind her and walked around to the driver’s side, fishing his car keys out of his pocket, and getting in and buckling his seat belt.

He put the key in the ignition and turned over the engine, which roared to life. He started to back out of the driveway. “Okay, which way is your house?”

"..Oh God." Les muttered, groaning and smacking his head lightly on the steering wheel. He sighed then lifted his head up to look at Mary. "I've got some money. Do you wanna call someone on a payphone? Maybe they could come pick you up."

oh I remember now! go to the gas station then drive a little then turn into the neighborhood by that.

Les sighed. “Thank God..” He muttered then continued to back out of the driveway and onto the street.

They rode in silence for a few minutes and he drove to the gas station like Mary told him to, then continued driving.
