no no not 'the' monarch's daughter, there is a guy named monarch
so long story short (you can read the long version here)
so his whole life he was completely ignored because he wasn't born with magic but his whole family was
and then when his sister was born, he got obSESSED to the point it manifested as the ability to control people's bodies
the extended magical pressure + emotional trauma eventually scarred his sister's soul to the point that soul-based magic (like monarch's) no longer worked
so she fled in terror and monarch followed a few weeks later and started a 'puppet theatre' and basically became a serial killer to cope with the fact that his favorite person didn't love him
and eventually he ended up 'collecting' a puppet that was... different. smaller. weaker. easier to manipulate without magic
he left her alive partially out of the fact he isn't all evil, but also partially because nicky (the child) reminded him of his sister
keep in mind: monarch has ZERO sense of right or wrong, ZERO sense of how to raise a child, basically any of the skills he would need to not horribly traumatize this (at the time) five year old
so he set her to work re-collecting any puppets that might have run away, by any means necessary. usually violence. she has a knife
thing is, nicky had had a family before, she had some sense that This Was Not Fucking Correct, and grew to hate monarch's guts. what kind of father made his daughter hurt people?
plus yknow if she ever said no he'd just say 'tsk. aw biscuits' and take over her body cus nobody ever bothered teaching him bodily autonomy
eventually nicky escaped and made her way to Yasashi, the minigod with whom rose (monarch's sister) was staying
monarch followed (accidentally, a portal went a bit haywire) and nicky snapped and fucked him up like really bad. like horribly bad. he couldn't walk, much less fly, much less run his puppet theatre, for months.
the only person that still loved him was the literal god of chaos. that's it. monarch destroys every relationship he gets with anyone ever
