Ari has to take a moment to steady their nerves at the mention of Team Rocket. Ari just rubs their makeshift bandage as they speak, a little something to try and calm their nerves...
"I... I can see you have a couple peculiar Pokémon with you. I've never seen a Braviary or Rapidash of these kinds before, not in any book or Pokédex I've read through. I do hope that they haven't been through any rough patches lately, and that they trust you."
It's clear that Ari would... rather not talk about Team Rocket...
Kyo took a moment to size Ari up. Nervous tendencies, fresh makeshift bandages. It was clear they weren't comfortable. Kyo pondered the question for a moment, choosing her response wisely. She didn't want to cause Ari any further discomfort if at all possible.
"I'm not surprised you haven't seen them before. You're probably more familiar with their Kantonian, Galarian, and Unovan counterparts, as those varieties are far more commonplace in the modern era," Kyo explained.
"My Braviary is a rare variant. They're solitary, migratory birds that used to be a lot more common in the northern coastlines of ancient Sinnoh, better known as Hisui. However, changing climates and overhunting eventually drove them to the brink of extinction. In fact, we thought them completely extinct until we found my Braviary."
"Similarly, my Rapidash is another so-called ancient variant from ancient Kalos, sometimes referred to as Jolie. It's said to be the ancestor of both Galarian and Kantonian Rapidash, given its Fire/Psychic-typing. The thought process is that Jolian Rapidash were taken from Jolie to ancient Kanto, Galar, etc. and adapted to those regions to better suit their environments. We knew of the existence of an ancient variety of Rapidash in Kalos based on old paintings and writings, but it was believed that the Jolian Rapidash populations retreated into seclusion due to the ancient war with the Galar region. Similar to my Braviary, they were thought to be completely extinct until we found mine."
Kyo hesitated a moment, trying to word this as carefully as possible. "They... haven't been through any rough patches lately, but... they entered my care for a very specific reason. With all of my Pokémon, those two included, they were rescued from..." Kyo paused, trying to figure out how to describe Team Rocket without explicitly mentioning them, "... poachers. How exactly these poachers came into ownership of them, I cannot say. But they came into my care after the White Rockets raided an abandoned trafficking facility and rescued them."
"As a second lieutenant for the White Rockets, not only am I charged with overseeing a small squadron of other members, but I also qualified to apply as a rehabilitation specialist. Since I have a... shall we say... 'affinity' for psychic types, they thought me best suited to take on a team of their more challenging rescues."
Meowstic purred a little and bumped her head against Kyo. Kyo smiled and scratched Meowstic's head. "Well, except Meowstic. She's been my partner since I was a child," she added with a chuckle. "She's also the only one I'd say who fully trusts me. The rest have endured a fair amount of abuse at the hands of humans, as I understand, and thus are reasonably apprehensive of me. Meowstic has done her best to help assist me while I work with them, but these things take time. All I can do is be patient and let them open up to me at their own pace."
