Hey Hayley! Hope you are doing well! This is sort of random but, I broke up with my best friend of 5 years. She was just awful to me, but we had some good moments. We ended our friendship because she said that I go to Disney too much and that I have a problem. That really upset me. I've been meaning to end of friendship based on other things too, but that was the last straw for me. Now that it's over, I guess I should feel free, but I sort of still feel sad? Do you have any advice?
sorry it took so long to reply to you, hun! hopefully it’s gotten better since, but i’ll do my best to offer advice :)
i kinda went through something similar with a friend recently. i hadn’t known her as long as you knew your friend, but things for a while had been drifting and any time i tried to remedy it, she still acted as though all was fine and we were never really able to fix anything because of that. as more time passed, it just got progressively worse and distant, and in that time i was able to think more about it. for a while, i was sad. i was left with questions unanswered on why it all happened, and i just wanted the closure of knowing so i could completely move on from it. even through the times i was deeply hurt by how inexplicably she and i broke up, i realized that her unwillingness to communicate with me was a flaw that couldn’t sustain a lasting friendship. when i tried to confront her one final time to move on, her still closed-off attitude when there was nothing to lose showed me that even if i had in some way wronged her, she still lacked the ability to work through it with me instead of lashing out. i realized that beyond us there were likely other problems plaguing her to make her act like this. and looking back, i genuinely feel sorry for her.
so, i’m hoping by now that things have improved for you, since you’ve had the time now to reflect and hopefully move on. anyone who can’t value your interests doesn’t deserve your time or company. a healthy interest that’s important to you shouldn’t be looked down upon in a friendship; if someone important to you likes something, you should understand and approve of that, because it makes them happy. keep in mind her judgments of you may have nothing to do with your interests and everything to do with her insecurity - and you can feel sorry for that, but remember you don’t deserve to have someone that close to you in life who is more willing to attack your interests for their benefit rather than lift you up. and especially since she was treating you awfully - you deserve so much more than that.
