When photoshop was gathering steam I wonder if there was a camp of people that said “it counts as art but only if you scan art you made using a physical medium and touched it up with photoshop”
I drew my first tattoo in photoshop on a blue iMac with a one-button mouse in 2004 and when I posted about it (the digital image side by side with a photo of the fresh tattoo) on DeviantArt I had an argument with someone in the comments who insisted that the digital image wasn't a real drawing but the tattoo made of a transfer of the digital image was a real drawing. They objected to my use of the words "I drew this" and insisted that the tattoo artist drew the piece, I just clicked buttons so it wasn't drawing.
For a while there was definitely a camp that was "It's only art if you draw it on paper, everything else is photomanipulation (which is not art)."
I remember seeing this a fair amount in the comments at the time, but as soon as tablets started falling into a reasonably consumer affordable price range I stopped seeing that argument.
