I think it’s funny when people debate if Mormons count as Christian not just in a “belong to true faith way” bc whatever but try to expand it to an analytical definition like dude if you look up the history of Christian sects and look at the fringes you’re gonna find ppl that think Jesus’s first incarnation was as the Serpent in the Garden of Eden coming to liberate Adam and Eve from being imprisoned like to be perfectly honest the whole “deification” thing with Mormons is actually one of their weird beliefs that has the most precedence in Christian history broadly speaking which is why I guess a lot of them are actually getting into studying Early Gnosticism and my god do I wanna see what that results in down the line

So like I wonder if this means the whole thing about Onan spilling his seed on the ground wasn’t just about him neglecting his procreative duties or condemnation of masturbation but was also like example #42952 of anti-Baal polemic since spilling seed on the ground is presented in the Bible as a sign of sterility whereas Baal did it to create fertility

Also I like how Sabbatai Levi’s followers who held faith he was the messiah even after he publicly renounced his claim and became Muslim would in turn also ‘convert’ to Islam in his footsteps but as crypto-Jews (Levi apparently would even send some letters to these followers until Ottoman officials caught on and he became a good boy) and like since the key moment for their movement was the belief that public apostasy was part of God’s plan they didn’t simply believe that “lying” was something acceptable in certain circumstances but that being deceptive and hidden about faith was in itself a holy activity and they became the most confusing and opaque esoteric movement ever to the point where people legitimately do not know if they’re still around or not

This is like that Sabbatai Levi guy who lead the largest most successful Messianjc Jewish movement in two thousand years up until he appeared before the Ottoman Grand Vizier who gave him the option to either embrace Islam and renounce his claim to be messiah, put his messianic clan to the test by standing in front of a company of royal archers who would then fire at him to see if God would send a simple gust of wind to protect his messiah or just refuse cooperation and get sentenced to death by implement in full view of his followers. Levi chose to become Muslim which broke the hearts of most followers but a small group of them retained faith and believed this was part of the messianic mission somehow that the true messiah would be so degraded that he would seemingly commit apostasy

I wonder if Mormons ever cite the Constitution as a source of divine knowledge for non-political matters? Like when interpreting the Bible they point to the Bill of Rights as a useful hermeneutic tool
