In the beginning, Dark and Light hadn’t existed. But with a spark and a Flame, both flared into existence. At first, the Dark had been shunned. In fact, most didn’t even know it was there.
For a long time, the Light flourished and all lived relatively happy. But every light casts a shadow. The brighter the light, the longer the shadow. This Light was very bright indeed for its shadow grew longer and longer.
And as the Dark grew, so did its hunger. All the Dark knew was this hunger as it had no real thoughts. But for all its hunger, it couldn’t touch the world around it. The Dark was for all intents and purposes, cut off.
However, as all flames do, the Light slowly faded. As it faded, the Dark became stronger. So it waited. Waited for the Light to fade completely and for all of existence to be its.
As the Dark waited for the Light to fade, a single being came to it. This man... No, this pitiful creature stared directly into the Dark and the Dark stared back. It was neither Light nor Dark and if the Dark could have thoughts it would have been confused.
The pitiful little thing screamed into the Dark out of fear and desperation. All hope had left this creature and it asked for the Dark’s help. Now, the Dark itself didn’t understand what it wanted for “thinking” and “freedom” were foreign concepts to it. All it understood was hunger.
So in its stupidity and blind hunger, it tried to devour the creature. But upon doing so, it gained self-awareness. It was a strange type of awareness as the creature it had devoured had become one with it. The Dark’s thoughts were not its own but rather the thoughts of what it had devoured.
It knew all the pitiful creature had known or was it the pitiful creature now? It mattered not. Now that it knew how to “think” and “exist,” it knew that it had always existed in the same space as everything it wanted to devour but had failed to realize it before.
So it set out and devoured the land, air, body, mind, and soul of everything. Nothing was spared from its hunger. Even the Light was devoured.
But as it ate more and more, there came voices. It realized that these voices were more “thoughts” from those it had devoured.
Now that it had devoured everything and had nothing left to eat, it was forced to listen. All the voices screamed and raged at the Dark for its monstrous appetite but at the same time understood and thanked it.
They were all one now in the Dark. But some rebelled, some sought to leave. The Dark didn’t understand how it was possible as they were all the Dark and the Dark was all of them. Yet it was still happening.
Then the dark felt itself splitting apart. Smaller pieces of itself floated away gaining thoughts of their own. It was quick to devour these newly formed pieces but one managed to slip away between the cracks of what the Dark knew.
So even to this day, the Dark searches for this stray piece so that it can be whole and free to devour once more.
