PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (2005) — dr. Joe Wright
It's always interesting when people compare Elizabeth to Lydia, and they do have a few similarities, but I personally viewed a pre-Darcy Elizabeth as well on the way to becoming her father: intelligent, witty, insightful and independent yet always mocking rather than genuinely connecting, bantering rather than having real and serious conversations, retreating and detaching rather than engaging.
And that's why even though the focus is usually on how meeting Elizabeth transformed Darcy for the better, I see Darcy as just as integral to Elizabeth evolving into a far better person. Darcy is serious, complex, mature, responsible, and painfully honest - he compels Elizabeth to take life more seriously, to rethink her judgments, viewpoints and perspectives rather than just remaining complacent, and to engage in deeper discussions and more candid self-introspection than she would have otherwise!
The craziest thing about Mr. Darcy's first proposal is that he goes on a passionate rant about how awful her family is and somehow he expects Elizabeth to accept him.
He spoke well; but there were feelings besides those of the heart to be detailed, and he was not more eloquent on the subject of tenderness than of pride. His sense of her inferiority, of its being a degradation, of the family obstacles which judgment had always opposed to inclination, were dwelt on with a warmth which seemed due to the consequence he was wounding, but was very unlikely to recommend his suit.
Which means that he either:
Didn't think she would care (clearly he hasn't learned the "I can insult my family but you cannot" rule)
Thought that she would be flattered by how her awesomeness/the strength of his love has overcome his hesitations
Was too wrapped up in his own struggles to even consider what she would think about his rant
And this all kind of goes back to how his big first line isn't that romantic, it's so much about him:
“In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”
He has struggled, he loves, he has feelings, and they must come out, but where is consideration for Elizabeth? It sets such a contrast to the second opening line. His feelings can now be repressed, if she desires it:
“You are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged; but one word from you will silence me on this subject for ever.” (emphasis author's)
(add to this that he says that he respects her family in the line prior)
The first proposal is so much about him. The growth between the two is beautiful.
Mr. Bennet: Sure, I haven't taken care of my daughters' financial security, but have I at least taken care of their education? No. But have I taken care of their emotional needs? Also no. But have I been a good protector and supervisor? I'm afraid not. However, have I been a good example for my children of being a kind and respectful spouse, parent, and all around human being? No again. But through it all, have I nailed being funny? Yes. And isn't that the most important role of a father after all?
The novel is called Pride & Prejudice.
If you make Darcy in a Sad Little Socially Anxious Shyboi who never did anything wrong in his whole life and has TRAUMA from Georgiana's near elopement, then you remove his snobbish Pride and erase his classiest Prejudice and it's no longer the novel Jane Austen wrote.
If you focus only on how men need to fix themselves and forget that Elizabeth judged too quickly and harshly; if you erase her need to grow, you remove her Pride in her intelligence/judgment and her Prejudice in maintaining her First Impressions (original title) and it's no longer the novel that Jane Austen wrote.
The story is beautiful because two people are open-minded enough to learn, reflect, and grow. The love story is compelling because neither of them are perfect. If you disrupt the balance of their faults, the entire premise falls apart.
