JFC Fic Recs 2
Woohoo! Time to share the second round of fic recs from our JFC members - we hope these fics bring as much joy to new readers as they have to the members who recommended them. Get reading!
The Quiet Man by @ivyblossom recommended by @asleepatlast
“It’s a stunning and tragic exploration of the psyche of John falling apart from heartbreak after The Reichenbach Fall. The layers of him are peeled back slowly, revealing more and more of John’s feelings for Sherlock as he tries to work through his grief, building this wonderfully rich picture of their history. He’s an unreliable narrator at times, which is always a joy to read, and watching him lose touch with reality as he spins off into the torment of his heartbreak really makes this fic stick with me. It feels so real and the first-person perspective makes it feel so much more intimate. John is trapped in his own head reliving memories of their time together and hallucinating Sherlock’s voice in his desperation to cope, and we’re right there with him, sharing headspace. It makes it impossible to put this story down until you’ve absorbed every last beautifully-worded bit of it. The imagery is rich, the dialogue is engaging, and the characterisations are wonderfully deep and distinct. Honestly, a must read.”
The Craving in Between by @love-in-mind-palace recommended by @mandapanda8
“It sucks you right in and you don’t want to stop reading!”
(Never) Turn Your Back to the Sea by @discordantwords recommended by @chrysanthemumsies
“It completely redeemed EVERY PART of S4. It’s the most in-character fic I have ever read. After reading it, I have had difficulties separating what happens in it from ACTUAL S4, because it’s written just so wonderfully. Absolutely fantastic fic.”
The Devil’s Blaze by @dulcimergecko recommended by @my-johnlocked-life “Former bronc rider now veterinarian John meets ‘horse whisperer’ Sherlock who’s pretending to be from Montana. John in jeans. A lot. Sherlock in jeans. A lot. Every chapter’s a treat!!!”
The Paradox Series by @wordstrings recommended by @onesmallfamily “I think it is some of the most beautiful writing I’ve ever read, ever. Both Sherlock and John make some profoundly romantic gestures for each other. It’s a touchstone in the fandom for me because of it’s outstanding quality.”
Thank you for these recs, JFC members! If anyone else would like to recommend a fic, please do so here! :)
