A space on nothing: Where are we going? What are we doing?

A space on nothing was created in March 2012, it turned out to be a solo act. It was not possible to involve everyone when a space was lack of resources.

It was a good test, for any of online platforms wanting to involve everyone to share something or 'nothing' would require resources, such as time and people power, and funding. Here are two recent new online art platforms for everyone that artists created and made: (Both platforms were commissioned by The Space and launched in June 2014)

"n+1" is a durational artwork occured in all possible situations, but a form of independent parts in different structures, developed from one year durational laboratory on 'nothing'

The Q&A: Robert Wilson Curiouser and curiouser Aug 23rd 2012, 22:58 by E.H. E. H.: For most of the play, Krapp sits and listens to his younger voice. How did you go about choreographing this stillness? R. Wilson: "I start with the light movement first which are not dependent on the audio score. They have their own structure and laws and can be performed separately. But when seen together, something else happens. They can reinforce one another without having to illustrate each other. I try not to impose any one means to a work. It remains an open question.   My work is formal. It is not interpretive. To me interpretation is not the responsibility of the director, the author or the performer: interpretation is for the public.   And what I have tried to do in my theatre is to show that what we see is what we see and what we hear is what we hear. And what we see can be as important as what we hear. As in life."

For the second One Year Performance, known informally as the «Time Piece,» Hsieh punched a time clock, every hour on the hour, twenty-four hours a day, for an entire year. An observer verified each day’s time card. «To help illustrate the time process,» Hsieh shaved his head before the piece began, and then let his hair grow freely for the duration. Every time he punched the clock, a movie camera shot a single frame. The resulting film compresses each day into a second, and the whole year into about six minutes.

Linda Montano and Tehching Hsieh Art/Life: One Year Performance (Rope Piece), July 4, 1983 – July 4, 1984

The two artists were tied together by an 8ft rope and were not allowed to touch for one year.

The contract, signed by the two artists on 4 July 1983 stated the following:

STATEMENT

We, Linda Montano and Teheching Hsieh, plan to do a one year performance. We will stay together for one year and never be alone. We will be in the same room at the same time, when we are inside. We will be tied together at waist with an 8 ft rope. We will never touch each other during the year.

The performance will begin on July 4, 1983 at 6 P.M. and continue until July 4, 1984 at 6 P.M.

This piece is one of various feminist performances in which a man and a woman are literally bound together. Lygia Clark and Helio Oiticica’s Dialogue of Hands (1966), Abramovic & Ulay’s Relation in Time (1977) and Boryana Rossa and Oleg Mavromatti’s Before and After (2006) are some other examples. 

Binding in this piece, becomes a metaphor of women’s cohesion to others, their sense of themselves as being defined not just by other people but those in connection to them.
