She grinned with confidence, absorbing his praise like a sponge. “Thank you.” Aspen said more sincerely. “It would sound a gazillion times better with an actual backing track or band, but it was pretty good.” 

“Since you’ve heard my vocals and I’ve heard yours... I have a proposal for you.” The teen said, finally weaving in what she first knocked onto his door for. “You just have to sing a duet with me! There’s this coffee shop that does open mic down in town and there’s usually a pretty decent crowd, so it’ll be super duper fun. Plus, it’s with strangers so if either of us bomb for some reason it, which we totally won’t, it wouldn’t matter!” She pleaded, giving a huge cheesy smile for emphasis on how much she wanted to do this. She just knew that their voices would mesh wonderfully together -and with the perfect song- would bring down the house.

This was her last attempt to keep him away from his homework and she was glad it was working, making her sing with even more power. When she finished her mini-concert she gave a dramatic bow and held her arms up in a v for victory. “Thank you, thank you. I’m here all week. May I remind you to please tip your entertainment.” 

“Did you like it? What am I kidding, of course you liked it. But seriously, did you LOVE it?” She gave a huge smile as she waited for his approval, trying to read his face to find the answer quicker.

Aspen snorted. “Two months? See, my philosophy is: if you’re already behind, who cares if you’re behind by one more day? Or even two!” She really wanted to continue to hang out with Zack and needed to think of a way for him to stay and not get all responsible on her. 

“Preach it, my brother! Anyways, I will now perform a song in your very own personal concert. It’ll unfortunately be in dreaded A Capella since I don’t have anything prepared, but it’ll still be fantabulous. Think of this as a preview for something I want to propose.” She grinned as she stood up and got ready to sing something for him, scanning quickly through her brain for a suitable song. 

The teen then shook around crazily to loosen up before opening her mouth and singing the chorus of “Here’s to Never Growing Up” by Avril Lavigne.

“Hot Chocolate and Christmas go hand in hand. You can’t have one without the other. It’s like... mayonnaise and Doritos!”

“Best case scenario, yes! Those commercials would never lie and Snickers are so awesome they would change it’s life… or it’s death. That, or just eat it and run because at least you would have had a cool last meal.”

Aspen contemplated asking if she was disrupting him and if he needed to work but she decided against it. “Classes Shmasses. The party bus has visited your dorm and you’re going to hang out with her. Homework is boring.”

“You are convinced right, my friend.” The teen started to run through her iPod playlist in her head when he mentioned Pop music. “I don’t really have a preference, I love everything! Well, except if they are really slow. Or boring. Or don’t have lyrics. I don’t like limiting myself that much- if I hear a song and I like it, who cares what genre it?” She rambled on, feeling very strongly about her choices. Music was such a huge part of her life, how could she not get really into a discussion about it?

Aspen examined the room and found his bed a suitable place to throw herself on.  She spoke laying on her back. “Ooh, Mini Backersfeld. No big reason, she’s just not here and I was wondering if I was talking to you and someone was lurking in the back or something.” 

“Songs that you connect with are a must. If it works for you, it doesn’t work for everyone. Like I said, I get easily distracted.” She shrugged. “You should definitely hear me, at least. What other songs do you like?”

“I don’t think I’m the only one at this school who’s a jerk. I’m just the only jerk at this school who’s perfect. So people care about what I say. This ‘Grumpy Cat’ has a lot of fun being one because nobody gets in their way. I say nice things to myself all the time just because, now others—that’s an entirely different story. Why be nice to people who don’t deserve it? Happy-pranks just make me more grumpy… But, you could try.”

“Yeesh, someone ate a PopTart in the ‘I’m-better-than-you’ flavor this morning. Everybody deserves to be treated nicely no matter what. You need to get on a smaller horse, my friend. Nonetheless, I’ll take you up on that offer someday... sleep with one eye open.”

She raised her eyebrow and gave a small smile at his song choice. “Not bad. A little too slow for me, though. I get bored in like the middle of the song. Seems to have worked for you, it’s very mellow jello.”

Then, she felt a little offended. Sure, there are a lot of students here and a lot of singers, but how has he not heard her before? Especially because she makes it one of her goals to make everyone know it’s her singing when she does. “You’ve never heard me sing before? I’m like everywhere whenever there’s a concert or performance! I’m pretty fantabulous. Here.” Aspen slithered into his dorm room, uninvited and past the boy before he could protest. She was on a mini mission now, but once again, got distracted. “Wait, who’s your roommate?”

Aspen couldn’t really understand why he was acting all jittery. If it was her, she probably would have opened the door while singing just so everyone could hear her. 

She tried to calm herself down, but it wasn’t working too well. It was like she struck gold, and she needed to chip her way in to get what she wanted: a new singing partner. “Mhmmm, sure. If you know any celebrities or have secret ties to the government, hit a girl up. Oh, and what song were you singing, anyways? Some of the lyrics were kind of fuzzy since I was listening through a door. From what I could tell, it really worked with your voice.” She leaned against the frame and smiled.

Aspen was determined to show him the magic he was missing in realizing he is a great singer. “Thank the sweet Mariah Carey you were singing loudly or I would have never learned this! And not that good? Not that good?? No, pop quizzes and homework are not that good, I love the sound of your voice!” She was practically jumping up and down in his doorway due to excitement at this point, not even taking into consideration how uncomfortable he seemed to be. 

“Why don’t you sing more? What other hidden talents are you hiding from me? Just wait, you’re probably a super spy-assassin hired by the government and I wouldn’t even know!”

“Most people haven’t which makes me kind of sad but at the same time not, because it is absolutely disgusting. It’s like ground coffee beans in a meatless corndog. Okay, so maybe not the best analogy to compare to me….. “

“Fried beer! That tastes way better.”

“How do you even fry beer?” the boy asked, curiously, as he frowned and crinkled his nose.

“Okay so back in Ireland - that’s where I’m from- I went to a fair and it was on one of those weird food stands and I just had to try it. I tried to watch them make it because I asked the same question since it seemed really crazy and it looked like dough they made into little ravioli-shapes and beer was poured in before they closed it.”

“If I ever find it again, I am definitely bringing some to you.”

The girl bounced on her feet and did a little dance as she waited for the door to open, impatiently. Somebody was in there singing and she couldn’t wait to see who it was. And if their voices were compatible because come on, Aspen is a sucker when it comes to doing a good duet. Any reason to sing with someone is a good reason. 

When the door opened, she was caught a little off-guard.  Zack? Really?? She never really expected for such an amazing voice to come out of a little chipmunk like him. Plus, she didn’t even hear it that clear because she was hearing it through wood, which means wood-less would make it sound even better! Nonetheless, Aspen smirked mischievously at the blushing boy.

 “Zack and Cheese, I cannot believe you have never told me you sang! And like, pretty fantastical, too. Not that I was eavesdropping on you or anything because I totally was, you owned that song and gave it a dog tag.”

Aspen twitched her head to the side like a dog, trying to figure out where the singing was coming from. The teen was supposed to just be in the Van Gogh House to drop off paperwork, but she was determined to find the singing by channeling her inner Sherlock Holmes. Sure, everybody practices in their dorm rooms, but for some reason, this voice in particular peaked her interest and she just had to find out who it was.

She leaned her head on each of the doors and was met with disappointment until she reached Room #1. Aspen never memorized everyone else’s dorm numbers and had no idea who was in there. The teen clacked on the door rapidly with her knuckles to see for herself.
