I still have hope that our better angels will win out in the end like they did in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 because when faced with tragedy how you react shows us who you really are. I remember watching it unfold on the television and watching in a state of shock and awe. I remember how in its aftermath for a few days it did not matter what color our skin was or what our religion was or what our gender was or sexual preferences. We were just Americans. I remember how in the days after the attack there were some who wished to do harm to Arab Americans in an act of cowardly revenge and how Americans from all walks of life decided to say no they would not tolerate such hatred and protected their neighbors and fellow citizens from needless reprisal because they were Muslim and/or Arab because enough was enough. They would not stand by and watch as injustice happens. To me that is exactly what it means to be American. To do what is right and say no to hatred and bigotry and to help your neighbors when they need it, to rush into burning buildings without hesitating to save their fellow citizens lives even if it meant losing their own. To me that is what being American means do what is right even if it's at great cost and never back away in fear when the challenge seems daunting. #GodBlessAmerica.
