This video blows out several misconceptions about autism, at a time.
This is a teen Mathematician Jacob Barnette on a public speaking session.
URL :https://youtu.be/Uq-FOOQ1TpE"
As a supplimentary & reference; I add a news article:
He absorbed his high school’s entire math curriculum in two weeks.
I am amazed to see how this video can blow out the following popular misconceptions:
Misconception 1. Severe autistic people's disabilities are meant to be Visible. Severe autistic prople cannot speak, cannot write book or blog.
Fact: Jacob is severely autistic. He doesn't "look" autistic, (although yeah, he is looking a bit more impulsive, rocky and adhd-ish than typically developing, but each autistic individual varies more than that). If he was diagnosed at an age of say 30 or 40 yrs age, it is prettymuch likely that many experienced therapists would put him into "mild" category, or would "not autistic at all". The video shows why look is so much deceptive; and also it shows how blurry is the border of "mild", "moderate" and "severe".
Misconception 2: Autistic people necessarily lack language skills like word usage, wit, humor, idioms etc.
Fact: Jacob's wit and sense of humor and way of abstractly using the language is better than any of the people I ever met in-person till date.
Misconception 3 : Autistic people can not ever use or understand any kind of body language.
Fact: Jacob is more expressive (in terms of fine bodily movements) than anyone else I ever met in-person. However his way of expressing himself may be considered as boastful or arrogant to some cultures, so its sort of melodramatic and inappropriate from a neurotypical point of view. But yes, he has a very robust and expressive body language, which itsef comparable to an art form such as dance; however a littlebit different from mainstream body language.
Misconception 4 : We need more and more treatment to 'cure' autism.
Fact: Jacob received an early intervention but it was worsening his condition. Notably the most popular therapy for autism, the "ABA therapy" is basically child abuse and gaslighting masked as science. All that worked for jacob, is being more understanding about his condition, and letting him to be autistic, just in his own way, and not in any judgemental way. The way his mother done it is much same as Thomas Eddison; they just provided home tutorial and purchased books. Jacob was neither "all work and no play", NOR "all play and no work". He was like "All play and all work". Because his play was his work, and his work was his play. And look at the confidence they allowed to grow in Jacob. Whereas most other autistics instead develop a deep sense of shame and guilt for the way they encounter failures, for their need of assistance and support, for being weirdo or lacking telepathic senses or "lacking personality" etc. And the more they cripple of shame, the more their wellwishers seed the sense of self hatred in them.
#Reblog
arachnophobia
a spider lives on my window and I believe him to be my friend I think I got used to him and we’ll stay like this till the end.
PLEASE REBLOG!
i feel the need to post this because there are still some ignorant folks in the world.
NEVER REFER TO AN AUTISTIC PERSON’S EXTREME SENSORY OVERLOAD AS “CHILDISH” OR “CHILDLIKE.” (those “fits” that autistic people experience when their senses are overloaded to a degree)
we can not control our “attacks” if a sensory overload gets bad enough. calling it something like “childish” is degrading and humiliating more than anything. the attack is embarrassing enough for many of us.
you should never speak lowly of people with autism. if you do, i have a serious lack of respect for you as a person.
PLEASE REBLOG BECAUSE NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE REALIZE THE DAMAGE THIS CAN CAUSE.
THIS.
aspie struggle
People around you just assume you don’t care/are being selfish but you just don’t know how you are supposed to talk about your struggles and stuff and they just stay silent and get mad and now you have no friends.
Today a sad yet funny arguement I had with 1 of my neurotypical colleague.
Colleague (say H) - What you are planning to gift in marriage ceremony of J (another coleague)?
Me (say I) - Book.
H - Its very inappropriate gift for marriage ceremonies.
I - But previously i gifted book as gift in marriage ceremony of another colleague (say G). (S)he was really really happy to get the book. Although other colleagues later told me it was an inappropriate choice, but G was really happy.
H - anyone will NEVER tell if they dislike a gift. Because telling so is very offensive and misleading. Also it dismays the struggle the giftbearer performed.
I - well, then tell me how can i know what is a good gift for marriage ceremony of J? I think then its best to ask her/him about what would be an appropriate gift.
H - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Never ever do so. That behaviour would be horribly anticultural and antisocial. If you stay in our country, you have to respect our morals, ethics, cultural standards.
I - Then what could be the other method? Observing J' s purchase patterns and other preferences? Secretly stalking J?
H - Come down to reality. You are thinking too much imaginative and absurd way. Think in THE REAL and PRACTICAL way.
I - I am thinking "THE" REAL and PRACTICAL way but it is you who confusing me into unreal mystery.
H - No, you are being confusing.
I - So then tell me what is the right gift and how could i choose it?.
H - Its simple. Gift them what you like.
I - Books?
Book is a very appropriate wedding gift. At least I’ll use it.
friendships
I remember loosing friends Lose friendships like a loose knot You might not realize until it’s gone What have I done? Maybe what you did not?
This is not me being a drama queen. But I have realized that my lack of communication skills will always ruin My life. I considered someone a friend of mine and I loved talking to him but I accidentally offended him causing him to block me. Such incidents have happened for a very long time and I loathe myself more every day.
Please don’t loathe yourself. There are people in the world who undestand.
Beginner witch?
Hi! I’m extremely new to the witchcraft community and am a little lost on where to start? It’s something I’ve been considering practicing for a long time as I came from a very strict, Christian family whose values I do not agree with and I love the sense of empowerment and acceptance that comes from wicca and witchcraft. Anyone have any tips or tricks on where to start?
Beginner here too, so no tips, but good luck on your journey!
depressed? maybe.
I keep dead flowers in my room No reason why I like them I’m lazy One day, I’ll die.
Wheel of the year and different rituals and activities one can manifest for the sabbats.
