The whole Halloween weekend had been filled with activities and he Aspen had barely time to think about anything else. Deciding to talk a walk around to see the effects of the end of the Halloween weekend, Aspen pulled on his sweater and headed out. It was funny seeing people still holding onto Halloween while others were dead set on the fact that it was officially Christmas season. On his way towards a bench so he could sit and people watch, Aspen noticed the only one open already had someone sitting on it. “Hey, mind if I sit here?”

“No issue, dude, don’t worry ‘bout it. We all need a lil push t’step away sometimes.” Dray took another swig from the bottle before letting it dangle in his hand at his side. He stayed closely next to the other boy as he walked, just in case he needed something to lean on. He didn’t feel drunk enough for that, but it was always good to take precaution. “So you’re, like, fresher, yeah? Sorry ‘f I asked that a’ready. Can’t keep it straight.”

“Yeah. It’s my first year and no worries.” Aspen smiled a little shyly at the other boy though he wasn’t shy. He’d always been a bit personable, had to be with the life he lead before. “What was your first year like? Was is crazy busy?” Having an idea of what he was in for would certainly be helpful, though school probably wasn’t something they wouldn’t want to be talking about the whole time.

“Whoa, that sounds like a massive workload.. I’m not surprised you don’t get around much.” Alex replied, as he got up and started heading towards one of the bookshelves. “I took a couple years off study after I finished high school, so I’m a bit older than the majority of freshers” He added with a small shrug, though he let out a laugh as he continued, “I can’t even pronounce this book’s name!” Alex said as he pulled out a thick leather-bound book, which had tattered pages and a faded cover. “Looks like it’s at least a couple hundred years old..”

“Honestly, I do it to keep my mind off the fact there isn’t a lot of nature around here. Way less then I’m used to. If I’m being totally honest, I may drop some classes NYU.” Aspen shrugged as he looked around for books that might help. “My birthday just happened to fall in the right time of year for me to be older then other people in my grade, but not by much. I’m 19.” When Alex mentioned the book, Aspen looked at it and started laughing. “I can’t pronounce it either. The books here are so crazily old, but it’s so cool.”

“Yeah, that should help.” Ed nodded,  shifting his hands back to Aspen’s. Gently he moved his thumb across the creases in Aspen’s hand a few times, glazing over a couple of different ones in particular. After a minute or so, he shifted his hand back to his book, “Well, erm.. you’ve, uh, got a long life.. and good vitality.” Ed lied, deciding it was probably easier than checking again; the lines were all pretty much the same anyway.

Aspen watched the other boy with a smile as he waited for him to give him his fortune. “Well that’s not far from the truth. It’s good to know my life is gonna be long with all this vitality coursing through me.” Aspen laughed, keeping his hand in Ed’s. He definitely had a lot of vitality, needed it in order to live the life he lived back home. It had wavered since coming to school since there weren’t a lot of rocks to climb or places to hike, but he tried to stay positive.

“Mozza,” Ed repeated with a small nod, “So, like mozzarella? I’ll definitely have to remember that. Is it busy? Last time I was here, there were a few others in line.. Now I’m really hoping they’ve got meat lovers, I had to get Hawaiian last time because they ran out.“

“Yeah exactly.” Aspen looked to see if there was a line. “It doesn’t look to busy. Maybe a couple people in line.” As he lead them inside, Aspen looked to see what sort of pizza they had. “They have tons of meat lovers. They must have known we were coming.” Aspen laughed as he got in line behind the two small groups waiting.

Ed grinned, “I’ll get along with anyone who likes pizza, too..” He replied, then shook his head, “Not sure I trust people who don’t like it, to be honest. Though I am glad to hear we’re close, I think my stomach’s about to digest itself.” he replied with another laugh. “I always forget the name, what’s it called?”

“People who don’t like pizza are just super dishonest. Horrible people I tell you.” Aspen laughed then looked up at the sign again. “Looks like it’s called Mozza. I wouldn’t be able to remember that name either.” He laughed again, knowing there were some restaurant names that were hard to remember.

Ed moved his other hand from the book to Aspen’s hand, then traced a finger down his fate line. He moved his finger across the crease a few times, “Well that must be wrong,” he then finally said as he moved a hand back to his book. “It says you’re supposed to have a long, curved line.. but yours is just small and straight.” He explained, then laughed as he continued, “Unless, of course, you’re actually dead and haven’t told me.”

“Actually... I am the undead.” Aspen chuckled. “Nah, I’m just joshin’. I have a long curved one on my right hand. Does that help?” He suggested, hoping he could be of more help. It would be fun to learn more about this stuff and this was the perfect way to do that.”

“Anchovies are just rotten baby fish, aren’t they?” Ed replied with a small laugh, “They smell horrible, and probably taste twice as bad.. I like the meat lovers one, too, and pepperoni.“ His stomach then growled again as though to be agreeing. With his free hand, Ed rubbed his stomach again as he chuckled.

Aspen laughed along with Ed as he heard his stomach. “I think we’re gonna get along very well Ed. Anyone who likes the same sort of pizza as me is all good in my book.” As they walked, Aspen looked around the city. It was such an oddly big place. Then his eyes landed on the big pizza sign. “Oh, I see the pizza sign. Not much further.”

“The whole callus thing I get, but the head line and heart line stuff..” Ed replied with a slight shrug before grabbing his book and bringing it closer. He ran his fingertips over the braille page and then said, “Well your life line is supposed to be the curved line near your thumb..” Ed reached towards Aspen and added, “Can I.. uh, have your hand?”

Aspen looked at his own slightly callused hand as Ed talked about callus’ and heart lines. When asked about his hand, Aspen looked up and smiled. “Yeah, sure.” Aspen moved his hand and placed it palm up in the other boy’s hand.

“You’re a first year, too?” Alex asked, “Shit mate, I can’t believe I haven’t really spoken to you. I thought I’d met everyone by now! But yeah, another book sounds good. This one’s bloody useless.”

“Yeah, I am. I tend to get a little wrapped up in classes. Plus, I’m taking some classes over at NYU so I actually don’t get a lot of down time during the week. I guess I didn’t realize you were a first year. Sorry.” Aspen chuckled a little. “Let’s go find a book. Maybe we can both get a better understanding about the summoning charm.”

winny hums against his shoulder, “mmm, you think i’m pretty?” she knows very well that she’s beautiful, but it’s always nice hearing it from other people. “my mom isn’t a witch either. she’s a veela, though. which means she can’t do magic with a wand but when she gets really, really angry her face changes and she can throw fireballs at my daddy. it’s quite funny. that’s why i’m so pretty, too, because i’m half-veela,” winny explains in a cheerful tone, nodding along to her stories.

“Yeah, I do.” Aspen smiled sheepishly even though he knew she couldn’t see his face. When she explained who her mom was it made sense, but it didn’t make what he thought any different. “Well they’re both fiery people right? No wonder they ended up together.”

“Thanks, it shouldn’t take too long.” Ed replied, shifting over a little to grab a chair to sit on. “I’m working on palm reading, I think it’s called Palmistry.. though personally I call it Palmystery because I’ve got no idea what’s going on. I think it’s all just a load of crap.”

“Palmystery. Good one.” Aspen sat down at the table with Ed, chuckling a little. “It sounds interesting to me. I actually can’t wait to learn more about palm reading. You can tell a lot about someone based off their hands and it’s more then just the lines on their palms. Callus’ are a good indicator too or rough skin. It shows if someone is a musician or a rock climber or something like that.”

Ed shrugged a little as he fiddled with his sunglasses, “I-I.. erm..” He stammered; he wasn’t particularly fond of allowing others to guide him as he hated how vulnerable and dependent it made him feel, which was why he also scarcely used his cane, though he gave another slight shrug as he knew Aspen was just trying to be friendly. “Yeah, sure.” He replied as he lifted his hand up, searching for a moment though quickly finding Aspen’s shoulder.

“So big pizza sign.” Aspen repeated again with a smile as they began to walk. “I’ve been craving pizza for days. What’s your favorite kind? I like those meat lover ones, but I’m honestly great with pizza as long as it’s pizza.” He saw the hesitation and was hoping he hadn’t made the other boy too uncomfortable. The best way to break tension was hopefully with a little bit of laughter. “Though I think it would be gross with anchovies.”

Ed laughed and fiddled with his wand for a moment before sliding it into his pocket for safe-keeping. “I won’t, it’s just a figure of speech, silly.. but thanks, I’d miss you, too.” He then replied, “Hey, I know you’re a fresher and all, but.. uh, could you, er, help out with my divination work?”

Aspen’s smile grew a little more. “Uh, yeah, sure. I don’t know how helpful I’ll be, but I can at least try. I guess we should sit down.”

Ed laughed, “Well, I’d like to eat it every day,” he replied, “Though, unfortunately, I’m not made of money. I think it’s down East Street, though I’m not really sure.. I just know it’s in the area.” Ed shrugged and then started walking forward, “I’ve been told it’s got a pretty big sign in the shape of a pizza, I’m sure you’ll be able to spot it.”

Aspen smiled, liking the fact that he could make Ed laugh like that. “Well let’s head down East Street and I’ll keep a look out for a sign in the shape of a pizza. Wanna use my arm?”

“Yeah, no thanks, man. You don’t really know me.” Surely the other guy was only trying to be nice, maybe only polite, but it didn’t make sense for him to be offering so readily to burden on someone else’s problems. Not that Dray would anyway. Not that Dray could. There wasn’t anything in particular that was wrong.

“Okay. Hope you feel better.” Aspen sighed quietly, looking dray a moment longer before shrugging and continuing his walk to the water. Yes it was a little cold, but Aspen dipped his toes in the water. To hell with getting a cold, but how could he go to the beach and not at least get his toes wet? He didn’t stray to far out of Dray’s eyesight just in case though he didn’t expect the other guy to talk to him again.

“I’m working on the summoning charm.. I’ve get the stuff in practice, but the theory is just going way over my head.” Alex replied.

“I don’t know how much help I can be considering I’m a first year, but maybe I can try to help you find it in a different book? I mean, we’re in the library after all.”
