@assholeew
iāve warmed up significantly towards the concept of small talk ever since i learned that its sole purpose is to make friendly noises.
as long as you smile and nod, people are satisfied. itās just to show that you are nice and there with good intentions. weāre small in a big world and have to rely on other people to be decent to us. so we do our little human dance to each other to say, āiām not here to hurt you. hereās something we have in common, like the weather or sports or itchy sweaters, so we both know weāre on the same team. we both agree on a basic fact, like that it is rainy or that being itchy is uncomfortable, and this proves we can get along. iām being light-hearted and non-threatening right now.ā
small talk isnāt to get to know a person. itās just a greeting to affirm youāre buddies in the universe.
i am motivated by wanting the other person to know i am friendly, so i have gotten pretty decent at small talk when i used to hate it.
idk thinking about how sometimes you have to show up for people you aren't that close to, because sometimes you're just the person who's there. sometimes you invite a new friend to a party and end up having to sit with them through a panic attack. sometimes you run into an acquaintance on their worst day and they need to talk about what happened. sometimes someone is crying in a stairwell and you're the only one around to ask if they're okay. and none of this is "trauma dumping" or whatever the fuck it's just being there for people because you're the one in the room with them.
My then-coworker was pregnant with her second child. One day she mentioned being terrified she'd go into labor at three in the morning and no one would be available to take care of her toddler while she went to the hospital.
"I know it's stupid," she said, "but I can't stop thinking about it."
"Call me if that happens, " I said, because we lived 15 minutes away from each other. "I'll run over and watch her until her grandparents get there."
And I didn't think too much of it at the time, but after my coworker came back from maternity leave she told me that this conversation, where some girl from work promised to give up a couple hours of sleep if her family had an emergency, was the reason she was able to sleep at night for the rest of the pregnancy.

the craziest thing about being alive is that you have to live with other peopleās interpretations of you
love passes thru me at all times like an electric current
āgetting thicker skinā is great in theory but I think for some people āget better at handling your thin skinā is gonna be way more helpful advice. I have strong emotional reactions to criticism and they might never go away, but i can continue to try and handle each situation maturely and thatās the important part. Sometimes irrational feelings are chronic and living with them is better than trying to beat yourself up into not having them.
my life really did improve when i decided to just constantly, casually compliment my friends and family. i cannot recommend it more. it makes everything better. you look incredible in that shirt, you're one of the funniest people i know, you're wearing the hell out of that dress, you're so sexy wtf, you're so talented, i love talking to you, you're so fun to be around, you're so kind, that haircut is amazing, i love you, i love you, i love you
some of yall will be like āi dont care about your dreams, i dont care about your spotify wrapped, i dont want to hear about your interests, dont you dare talk to me about your trauma,ā and its like. what do you even have friends for. bc it sounds to me like you dont give a shit about anything that makes them a person. what do you talk about.
a few people have expressed some resistance to the ātraumaā part of this post and like. im Obviously not talking about trauma dumping in inappropriate situations. if youre friends with someone ā real friends, not acquaintances ā and their past experiences come up and you dont want to hear it, not bc its triggering to you or anything but bc you just dont give a shit, then youre a bad friend. you can talk about trauma dumping and emotional labor till the cows come home but theres no amount of woke verbiage that will make it okay lmao
