The rain fell like hail and the blood like rain. A cry sounded somewhere among the dark streets, echoing in the even darker sky. The villain stood without a smile, light up in the darkness for a brief second with a sizzling crack of lightning. Yards back the hero stuck out a hand to steady themselves on a large piece of broken concrete, the palm of their hands splayed upwards as if calling to the lives obliterated in the villains surge of power. “Your a monster”. The hero spat out the words in a mix of hate and regret. Hate for what the villain caused, and regret for not being able to stop it in time. Even in the darkness, They could see the villain slightly flinch at the term. They might've even taken pride in their reaction if not for the next words that next played out of the villains mouth. “No.” There was a pause in which their voice stopped and lightning once again illuminated the wreckage of their battleground, thunder drowning out any background noise in this deadly dispute. “Just a failed hero”. With that line said, the villain surged towards him, and they locked in combat for a few precious seconds. As soon as they jumped back to their positions, the hero took in the brief seconds that the villain used to catch a breath to spit out another taunt, maybe in hopes of drawing them out. “Like someone like you could ever be a hero”. The villain, probably expecting some inspiring speech, tilted their head and spoke up after it did not come. “Being a hero was a sacrifice I could not take. I know it is a matter of my cowardice and inability.” They paused to tilt their head back, soaking up the pelting rain on their shadowed mask, the materials glinting still in the absence of the sun. As they spoke again, their head slowly tilted back down. “But I do not know which of these qualities made me a villain” It was almost a whisper, yet the shaking of their voice was audible, and surviving bystanders watched with unbridled fear and curiosity. “So I ask you, as a hero, to fight me with honor, with a head held high and dignity upon their shoulders!” Their voice no longer shook, their voice rising until it reached a scream. As the sky cracked wickedly in response, the hero looked at them with shock, before pulling their lips back into a snarl, starting their sentence like the one before. “Like someone like you has ever had honor”. They scoffed slightly, though their uncertainty was evident in the way their eyes flickered around the villain. The villain, in response, stared. Stared for a second too long in the howling rain before a cruel smile swept across their face, a deep contrast to the gentle and pitiful eyes. The hero was still off balance front this odd interaction between one they thought was emotionless. In a flourish of a cloak, the villain had appeared in front of the hero and slit their throat in one fell swoop. As their body crumpled to the debris’ like so many civilians, lightning shone upon their sloped shoulders and wicked expression. Their eyes shone hollow and cruel, a deep contrast to the gentle and pitiful smile.
