IMO, this shot in the first episode instantly communicates to me that these show runners understand the world. I literally gasped.

Every episode that airs means we're one episode closer to Dumai's Wells
how dare you
Oh damn. In probably less than 24h, I'll be watching The Wheel of Time tv show, like, how surreal is that?!? I'll be able to talk about it with family and friends that would not get near a 15 chunky books series!?! I can't even imagine the feels for someone who started reading them in the 90s...
I've been on the hype train for this show ever since it got announced back in 2017? 2018? That seems like yesterday & so long ago at the same time. 🥺 I had not yet finished my first read of the books and that motivated me to pick up book 8 and give it another try... currently on Lord of Chaos for the second time, now. 😅
Can't wait, yet not ready at all.
Almost 30 years in the making & waiting
I first picked up Eye of the World my first semester of Uni at a used bookstore, that had been there decades already. The smell was of old leather, dusty paper, cigarette and pipe smells and was a home for me. I'd take money every paycheck (which wasn't much given I was a full time student and a part time worker and being paid 90s retail wages, wasn't much at all!) and put it aside for a once a month trip to the bookstore to procure my allotment of leisure reading.
One I found was Eye of the World. It was a brick and I thought, "Why not?"
Bear in mind I hadn't read Tolkien yet (In fact, I didn't read Tolkien for another 10 years!) but was a hard-core sci-fi nerd (Asimov, Bradbury, Pohl, etc.) and tomes didn't phase me.
Like many, I was lost in the prologue - but then the horror of "Shai'tan take you, you lightblinded fool!" and the terror or Lews Theren Telemon and how he reacted to what he wrought.
Winternight.
The Long Road at night.
The midnight escape.
the short respite in Baerlon.
Adrihol.
Damn Lost Ones.
And the tale had wormed its way into my soul and has never let go.
Of course, I had to go out and purchase the next 3 books - and paid full price for them (in paperback - because I was a poor college student paying their own way when you could afford it.)
When I first read it, I strongly identified with Egwene, who was so thirsty for knowledge and yet pushed beyond all bounds of safety, enmeshing herself into everything she stuck her toes in.
Later, it was Nynaeve, who was in a position of authority and not necessarily respected, which I went through as well.
It's only now that I easily Identify with my namesake, who had earned much honour, was a whole person, respected, trusted, with spouses and loved ones and yet no one says a thing for her not having kids of her own (much ji to Wife Lian!)
I'm sure later it will be Sorilea, or Cadsuane, or Siuan. I don't know.
Each one on the page - all fearless in their own ways, some thinking themselves cowards when their actions are far from it (a show-not-tell example of imposter syndrome if I ever saw it!) - picking up the pieces from going from the most powerful person in the world to the most meagre in an instant - Surviving the worst case scenario and yet still trooping on, carving out a new life from the shattered remnants from before.
But these women, committed to page decades prior, are imperfect yet perfect examples of women being celebrated, held in respect and esteem, and giving voice to someone other than the Maiden, the Mother, the Crone.
And then there is the one who was thrust into a destiny not intended, knowing the stakes of failure and facing it down like the fiercest of Aiel, screaming defiance and spitting into Sightblinder's Eyes and doing it anyway while trusting that there is one thin thread that rescue might come - and doing it anyway.
All of this story, born from a man born in pre-segregation South Carolina, who went to war and returned, and found that he had a story to tell and set out on the road - the Road from the Mountains of Mist - to tell it and yet never lived to see it finished, all showing up on the little big screen.
This dawning of a new age, where Dragonsworn will have their spears tested and yet welcome the Wetlanders into the fray, enjoying the new turning of the Wheel.

The Wheel of Time adaptation finally hits Amazon Prime Video tomorrow, and for someone who’s been a fan of the series for over 30 years, the journey to this day has been a lesson in getting what you want when you least expect it.
hi
The TV show releasing tomorrow has made me really nostalgic for the wheel of time tumblr community. I miss you guys and I hope you’re doing well. I’m absolutely vibrating with excitement about this show!!!!!!!!
It’s incredible that after all these years it is finally happening. Like actually, honest-to-Light happening fr fr. Unbelievable.
I know that it's not possible because Jordan was very traditional when it came to gender but what do you think would have happened if it turned out that the Dragon Reborn was Egwene? Do you think she would have handled the situation better? They do have quite different personalities and methods of problem solving
I let this ask sit in my askbox for a little while because listen, anon, this is such a fic prompt.
But finally I had to admit that there’s no way I’d actually be able to write the probably very very long fic this would end up being anytime soon, so you get an answer now.
I think the main difference would be in accepting her role. I’ve talked before about how Rand and Egwene are very clearly written as parallels in many ways, and how they face versions of the same thing in their own stories, each in their own way. And I’ve also mentioned a few times that what I tend to see as the origin of the differences between their storylines (there are of course many other differences, but this is the first of them in many ways), underscored by these parallels, is that Rand is a hero by necessity, while Egwene is a hero by choice. Egwene chooses; Rand is chosen.
(And wow that’s an interesting play on agency and gender…hm. One for later, perhaps.)
It means Egwene, while she struggles in other ways, embraces the roles she must take on, while Rand fights against them. Even when he does accept, there’s a lingering element of denial, of desperate defiance, of having to hold on to himself in face of who he must be.
Rand fights against what he must be; Egwene fights to be what she must be. Rand tries to hold on to himself against the external pressure of everyone around him seeing him differently, needing him to be the Dragon Reborn but also fearing him, expecting him to go mad, expecting him to be terrible, to break the world anew. All the force of those expectations thrust on him, and he tries to hold himself against them even as he must take on the role anyway.
So while Rand is faced with the overwhelming force of expectation and fear of what he will and must be, Egwene is faced with the overwhelming force of expectation that she can’t possibly be what she knows she must be. It’s similar, and yet opposite. Rand is being pulled under a current that’s towing him out to sea, too fast and too far and he’s afraid he’ll lose sight of shore completely. Egwene is fighting to swim out, against a current that’s trying to carry her back to shore.
Rand has to be persuaded to leave Emond’s field, because he must. Egwene has to ask to be taken out of Emond’s field, because she doesn’t yet know that she must, but she knows it’s what she wants.
Rand has to fight to hold on to his humanity and his innocence while the world expects him to be a monster and humanity needs him to be the Dragon Reborn. Egwene has to force the Tower to see her as Amyrlin rather than as an innocent biddable child.
They’re both fighting expectation, but in different directions. And so, even as their stories hit similar beats, they’re also…opposite.
So I think if Egwene were the Dragon Reborn, it would be similar. (Or similarly opposite, I should say). I think she would accept it sooner and more completely, but perhaps she would struggle to assert her status and her will on those who must follow her. I think in the end she would struggle in many of the same ways - being the saviour and destroyer of a world isn’t easy, and there’s so much that must be lost along the way. It would just come from a different angle, much the way her story already does when compared to Rand.

Wheel Of Time, from a realitively uneffected farmers perspective
Well looks like it’s gonna be winter forever. (Months later) It’s finally spring, and I think some young men just tried stealing eggs from my chickens. Well I guess it’s gonna be summer forever. Oh, there’s another dragon? Is it Logan or one of them other fellows? Not my business, that. I guess it’s gonna rain forever, I’m half dead now. The dragon reborn is probably dead, we are screwed. I just saw my dead mother, again. I guess my house has an extra room now and the hallways moved again. The village just melted. Litterally. Oh I guess the dragon isn’t dead? Finally the daughter heir is queen, rightfully so. I think plants are finally growing, hopefully the weather is actually normal for once. The dragon reborn is dead, probably. Huh, the seanchan aren’t that far away, are they? Wtf happened? Oh I guess the dragon reborn was alive and is actually dead now, thank the light. I think a young man just tried stealing some of my eggs.
Amazon Studios has ordered “The Wheel of Time,” an action fantasy series based on Robert Jordan’s bestselling fantasy novels, which ha
“Rafe Judkins, who is also executive producing the series, said that for “so many people, including me, this book series has served as a world to escape to, to lose yourself in, to devour and inhabit completely. And I couldn’t be more honored to be the one finally bringing that world to life on screen, for old fans to lose themselves in all over again and new fans to discover for the very first time.”
Interesting. They make it sound like Moraine will be front and center, which could be an interesting way to adapt the series to the screen. Definitely allow the Aes Sedai to be introduced early on (depending on how they approach it).
Also be fascinating to see Two Rivers from her perspective.
It is interesting, not sure how I feel about it. What does everyone else think? Would love to see this discussed.
Series description from the article:
Set in an epic world where magic exists but only women can use it, “The Wheel of Time” follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the “Aes Sedai,” as she embarks on a dangerous journey with five young men and women across the world. Moiraine is interested in these five “because she believes one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, who prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it,” Amazon said in a statement.

Siuan: How are you feeling?
Moiraine: I’ve got this headache that comes and goes.
Ta'veren enters the room: Hello.
Moiraine: There it is.
