Project 940 Lenok (a type of salmon), known in the West by its NATO reporting name India class, were a pair of diesel-electric submarine motherships for two Poseidon Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicles (DSRVs), designed to assist damaged or otherwise sunk soviet submarines.
Sadly out of commission by the time the Kursk disaster took place.
The wreck of the russian nuclear attack submarine K-141 Kursk, sunk on 12 august 2000 after a faulty torpedo blew up inside the vessel, instantly killing 95 sailors, a further 23 survivors latter dying as the Russians refused international help, for a grand total of 118 dead.
