Poppy seed head tile by Joanna Atherton Via Flickr: These are the first glazed examples of the tiles I recently made, impressing poppy seed heads into clay. I’m quite excited by the results, but I’ve glazed the second batch with a slightly thinner layer, in the hope it will allow you to see the intricacies of the patterning. They will be going in the kiln tomorrow, so I’ll have to be patient!

I would say that my concepts are an extension of my defensive nature and they present the opportunity to silently retort the issues that I face as a fashion-loving, gay man that idolises pop culture and takes too much interest in “the self”. With these qualities, it’s ridiculously easy to fall into the category of the disregarded and there are those who love to diminish my creativity. This image however, was created as an offence to the over-sexualisation and negative scrutiny of my work. I wanted to exploit the way that certain members of the audience can often misinterpret self-portrayal for narcissism, and they forget that behind every photograph is a sadness that I am trying to relinquish.
