N Georges Blog Entry #9: Course Reflection

It is very sad to see this semester come to an end. This semester went by quicker than I expected and I want to honestly say that I have learned a great deal of information this semester. The topics that stood out to me the most would definitely have to be the topics on church and state, demagogues, and learning about all the different migrations that occurred to the New World that gave us the great nation of the United States of America. This course really opened my eyes to a new perspective on many famous individuals who in elementary school I was only taught one side of, like Christopher Columbus and George Washington.

The subjects that I loved the most now that we are ending out journey would probably be the first two sections where we talked about the migration of the Europeans coming to the New World. Learning about Erik and the Vikings or Magellan’s travels through Animaniacs was pretty interesting. I do not believe that there were any blind spots when it came to the coursework, but I do however believe that during the teaching portion of the course, some days we had blind spots, only for the simple fact some questions would be asked causing Professor Morton to go on a sidebar to help the student understand, I think that would be where I get a bit lost.

My favorite assignment throughout the semester would have been the assignment we did on Black Native Americans. It made me realize that even though I am African American, I have been privileged enough to have been raised in South Florida which is the melting pot of all cultures in the United States. I never had to face prejudice or anything in that nature because everyone from South Florida is mixed with something and we are more accepting of others as compared to other parts of the state of Florida and the rest of country.

Through the use of media in this course, I learned a lot. So with the Animaniacs videos, I learned about Magellan’s travels. Through South Park I learned about the Mormon religion. This as well as other examples have made it more interesting for me to learn about history.

N. Georges Blog Entry: Movie Journal Reflection

With this extra credit assignment, I choose to watch the movie entitled “Class of ’61.” I am going to be completely honest with you. Brace yourself. During this movie, I was completely lost, like “Where is Waldo?” type lost while watching the film. In the beginning of the film, I was not too sure what to expect seeing that it started off like one of those old history films that one flips the channel for in order not to die of boredom. As the movie went on, that is when I began to fully understand what was going on. The film is basically a diary of one of the main characters which explain how his life change due to the war and though he was once part of the Union, he found himself resigning and going back home to support the Confederates military.

So now let us talk about correlation to the course that we are taking. So this film has many correlations that could be made in regards to our course work. For example, we just completed section nine where we discuss slavery in a great deal. So as part of the notes for section nine, we discuss different types of slaves and different forms of slavery. There are forced slavery, debt bondage slavery, chattel slavery, and serfdom. So in the film, the main character, Shelby Peyton, has a slave. The slave was named Lucius and during the film, he is being chased down by two white men, each on their own horse. Lucius, who at the time was planning to run away with his very pregnant wife to get to the North for “freedom.” Back to the men on the horse, so because he was being chased, he tried to fight back. He was able to shot one using their own weapon and injure the other, causing him to flee the scene.

Now Lucius and Shelby grew up together as children so there was a part in the film where Shelby and Lucius had a heart to heart that caused for Shelby to ask his father, the owner of the plantation, for the freedom of both Lucius, his wife, and unborn child. Lucius did not know of such thing and was trying to escape and got into the whole ordeal and realized that because he, a slave, killed a white man, his life would never be the same. Here is where the correlation comes into play. We learned in class about manumission. Manumission is the act of a slave owner giving a slave his or her freedom. This is basically what Shelby was attempting to do when he went to ask his father for the freedom of Lucius and his family.

I had to do some research in regards to the Battle of Bull Run. Just like many other battles in the American Civil War, many people were literally fighting against their own brothers, uncles, fathers, neighbors, and friends. There was a scene in the beginning of the film where both the cadets who supported both the Union and the Confederates met in the field and were given the news that the Union Garrison had surrendered at Fort Sumter. The tune began to play and some started singing the Star Spangled Banner while others, simultaneously, sang the Confederate Song. At this point in the film, I thought to myself, “Oh man, it’s about to go down.” Throughout the film, I felt as though due to the issue revolving around slavery, many families were broken apart and forced to pick a side. When Shelby resigned and went back home, he was given an assignment on the Confederate military as a commander. Well at least I thought he was seeing that he was the one giving orders as to when they should fire their weapons. In the midst of battle, as people were being killed left and right, he saw his two friends, whom which he was in the same graduating class. At the end of the battle, he walked over to the other side and saw the bodies of many men lying on the ground. Lifeless. He even saw the body of his teacher from the military academy he left and at that point, he broke down into tears to see those he loved killed by the orders of war.

I honestly believe that many people who lived during the war would agree that this film is a great depiction of what life was like and how the war would serve as a cause for families to split apart and brought so much turmoil to the nation.

N.Georges Blog Entry #8: Social Justice

So to begin, I decided to watch three documentaries on Human Trafficking. So while watching these short documentaries, I came to the realization that it is true, slavery has not ended. My reasoning behind this is due to what it actually defined as slavery. Slavery is the considered to be a condition as to where a person is exhausting from labor or restricted of freedom. To be quite honest, before this assignment, I always assumed that prostitutes loved what it was that they do and never gave a second thought to the idea that there is the possibility that one may be forced into prostitution.

Now when I look at what was discussed within the three films, I realize one common thing, human trafficking is a huge money industry around the world. There is the idea that human trafficking only occurs overseas, but it happens in our very own backyard and that is the scariest part of all. The idea that any one person could be forced into this is terrible.  

Many people who are involved in Human Trafficking are usually manipulated or tricked into that form of slavery. They could be individuals who are running away from life and their current abusive situation and find comfort in what they believe will be their safe haven. There are also individuals who are sold into slavery due to lack of monetary resources to feed their families. To see in one of the film that the a mother sold her daughter to a broker once she had reach the final stage of AIDS and could no longer be a prostitute was very sickening to me.  To think that a mother would willingly allow for her only child, her daughter, to live the same life that she lived was crazy to me. But then again, one will never know whether or not that she truly believed that this lifestyle would be best for her child due to the fact that her child would have a roof over her head after she died.

In regards to any blind spots in the film, I do believe that there are a few blind spots, such as reasons why the government does not get involved and why there has only been one conviction in Mexico. There are certain things that are not adding up and seeing that this is such a controversial topic, which in itself could be the reasons as to why we do not hear too much about human trafficking in the United States.

Do I believe that slavery could never happen again? No, I truly believe that even in this day in age, we are all enslaved in some way shape or form. There are still people who have their freedoms taken away from them on a daily basis. The real question we should be asking is not whether or not slavery will never happen again, but what will cause for us to go back to the ways of slavery.  When I think about what I learned about Human Trafficking through these films, I realized that in order to make a difference, we need to learn to accept others. We must learn to not be so judgmental and become more open as a society as a whole.

N. Georges Blog Entry: Movie Journal Reflection

I choose to do my extra credit assignment on the film entitled Field of Lost Shoes. This movie was great from beginning to the end. I am not a fan of history movies because I never seem to actually feel any sort of connection, but with this film, I found myself interested and wanting more. I am not going to lie and make it seem as though I knew what was going on in the film in the beginning. I did not. I was so lost it should have been illegal. Anyways, I really enjoyed this film and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to learn a little bit about the history behind the American Civil War, especially parts that are usually missed due to the fact that it was a part that was not considered a victory for the Union.

Now, to be honest, we have not yet had any connections made in class as of yet in regards to how this film would correlate to our class as this is during the American Civil War and we have not yet discussed this so, as recommended by Professor Morton, I did some research on the American Civil War, specifically the Battle at New Market. So from my understanding, the Battle at New Market was an attempt in which the northern US militia planned to cut off the supplies to the southern confederates. The North was being led by General Ulysses S. Grant and the South was led by John C. Breckinridge. Now the name of the film was relates to the conditions after the battle where due to the mud, many shoes of the soldiers in battle were left behind.

Now what really made the Battle of New Market so interesting was the fact that due to the small number of troops available to General Breckinridge, he had to go and get into some real drastic measure. He had to go and round up cadets from the Virginia Military Institute to increase his number of troops. What made it interesting was the fact that there were young boys who were recruited to be a part of the war. There was a part of the film in which the boys were told about the request of their presence in to war and the boys were so excited. One of the main characters had his family and his home burned down and he asked for the “leader” of their group, John Wise, to ensure that he would get the opportunity to obtain revenge for his family. When news came to the boys about the opportunity to go to the war, he saw knew that this was his chance to seek revenge.

As the movie went along, I found myself getting more and more into the film because I had this ugly feeling in my body thinking that John Wise would get hurt. There were parts in the film that I felt were true to the fullest extent. For example, the young boys, John Wise and his group of cadets in the Virginia Military Institute found themselves making a bargain with Old Judge who was considered to be the property of the institution. In other words, he was a slave for the Virginia Military Institute who was in charge of the bakery. With that being said, the boys were able to convince Old Judge to give them some loaves of bread in exchange for wild animals like rabbits. This would give some meat to the slaves and they would get more bread. Old Judge did not agree to it because he knew that he would get more of a punishment for doing so than the boys. One night the commander of the Institution found out of the trade and brutally assaulted Old Judge. The young boys kept their promise and went to plea the case of Old Judge and told the commander that it was they who did the deal and Old Judge had nothing to do with it. This is a great example of how slaves were treated. It also showed the integrity of the young men for keeping their word.

This film was truly great. I mean granted I had to do some extra research in order to find out how it exactly correlated with our course work, but I really so believe that this point in the Civil War was very crucial because it showed the North that this would not be an easy fight. It also showed some of the flaws in leaders when it comes to the military. Due to stubbornness and miscommunication within the North’s military unit, the North loss the battle at New Market and it gave the South a leverage on the North. I mean the South still lost the war, but this Battle really help set the pace at which the North learned to tighten up and get to work.

N. Georges Blog Entry Extra Credit: Oregon Trail

To be quite honest, when Professor Morton told us that we had to play a game for extra credit, I thought he was joking. Like you will seriously give me extra credit just to play a game? No way in hell is it just that simple. So I was up to the challenge. I decided to play the game. I went to the PowerPoint presentation and clicked on the link and started the extra credit.

The thing with the game, The Oregon Trail, was that it was not your average game. It was pretty straightforward, but again, I was still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I will get extra credit for doing something fun! That’s beside the point. So I started the game and in the way of all responsible college students, I did not read the full instructions of the game. I just skimmed through and started playing.

Of course, I read the fine print that stated that if I were to be a farmer or a carpenter, there would be a reward for me at the end of the game. And like that I became James the Carpenter. My family included Amber, Andrew, Jaylen, and Jaden. Don’t ask me where those names came from, I have no idea. Anyway, we started on the journey with 2 wagons, 2 wheels, 2 axles, 2 tongues, 10 sets of clothing, 6 oxen, and 200 pounds of food. I thought that I was set. Little did I know that my rations would deplete so fast that I would not make it to the river. So when we got to the second river, I took it upon myself to go hunting. Little ol’ city girl from Miami wanted to go virtual hunting. Let me tell you, I failed miserably. I think the buffaloes and the deer just laughed at my shots. I was only able to shoot at the trees. I didn’t know how to move. Idiot, I know. Okay, further along the trail, I began to realize that if I change my rations, my family would survive. Nope. The second I changed my rations of food, Andrew got the measles, Jaylen broke his arm. Amber got sick. I’m like what the pickles?! How? I couldn’t afford to feed everyone so that they were stuffed, but I couldn’t afford to lose my family either. By the time I could change the rations of food again, my family either died of some disease or drowned in the river.

This game was so tricky that it made me want to go and find out about the living conditions of those who actually traveled on the Oregon Trail, and it was horrible. People had to go through hell and if they experienced any type of problems along the way, you could say that they had might as well had cancelled their trip and accept the fate that they would surely die in the where they were and forget about the land of hope and prosperity that wooed them into going on that journey to begin with.

N.Georges Blog Entry #7: American Demagogue

For this blog post, I found that I had to watch the documentary four times in order to fully understand what was going on. I elected to watch the documentary film entitled, “See it Now: Edward R. Murrow vs. Joseph McCarthy.” The first time I watch the report on Senator Joseph McCarthy, I continually found myself asking why I would set myself up in such a manner. It was not until after watching the documentary did I really begin to comprehend what was being said during the report.

When the documentary first begins, Edward Murrow starts off basically saying that if Senator McCarthy wants a chance to help explain himself, he would be given the opportunity at the end of the report. When he said that, I was so confused, was this report going to critic Senator McCarthy’s policies? Come to fine out, the report was more of avenue for the public to see Senator McCarthy for who he really was, someone out to gain full control over the government.

At this point, I had to go back to understand the definition of a demagogue. When the word is broken down to its roots, the Greek word demagogue breaks down into two words, demos meaning the people and agogos meaning leader. I then dug a bit deeper and finally understood that a demagogue in the political sense could be anyone that the “people” select. At this point I thought about the 2016 Presidential Election as shook my head.

Now, McCarthy had a strong passion against communism but in being so passionate, were the means of causation to bring forth such an arrogant individual. In the film there Senator McCarthy claimed that only the left wing press criticized him on his wicker case. The ratio between the newspapers that criticized him to the newspapers that supported him was a 3 to 1. One left wing paper said that “Senator McCarthy would better serve his cause if he learned to distinguish the role investigator from the role of avenging angel.” Another Newspaper’s headline read “McCarthyism involves assaults on basic republican concepts.”

The one that really got me thinking was the headline that read “The line must be drawn independent or McCarthy will become government.” That headline really had me thinking about today’s election. For one individual to believe that they have the power to control everything in government is really baffling. When you think about it, yes there is a president who is in charge of the country, but there is also a congress who can either make or break a president’s agenda. For McCarthy to be just a senator and to think that he can control the government is crazy.

To be honest, I do not believe that there were any biases in this film seeing that the words used were from McCarthy’s own mouth. In this case I would not call it being bias but more of allowing more of the truth out so the people, the population, could see him for who he really is.

N.Georges Blog Entry #6: The American Way of War

So the documentary that I selected for this blog entry was the documentary called Seconds from Disaster: Black Hawk Down. This documentary was about what happened on October 3, 1993 in a small city in Somalia. What started off as a humanitarian effort to supply food and good to the people of Somalia, turned into a blood bath. This, according to the film was the second most causalities experience by the American people overseas.

Basically what happened was that they wanted to capture the new leader and his people because they were bringing violence to country. The US troops were planning on only taking 45 minutes to an hour in order to capture the leader and his followers. Well things did not go as planned at all. There were four sections that they divided the troops in and each was called a chalks one through four. Chalk four was dropped off at the wrong place due the sand that was being blown around by the helicopter. What made matters worse was the fact that the military personnel had already used this formation beforehand. This in turn cause for the people Somali to study their tactics and gave them more of an advantage to attack.

At first glance, the film was a tad on the dull side because I was not really in the mood to be watching a history film. To be quite honest, this film turned out to be more interesting than I had expected. I really did not know about what happened in Somalia. To see that because they underestimated the country, they walked into their own funeral, so to speak. To see that they used RPGs to shoot down the helicopter from the sky and knowing that the military would send all of the rescue military members to the first accident. When the second helicopter went down, they did not have the necessary resource to help those who were a part of the second accident. To see that the people of Somalia to go and grab prisoners and to show on television how they are dragging the army men around was pretty intense.

I do believe that there are some biases in regards to this film. There were not enough insight on the side of the people of Somalia. They said in the film that the army came as part of humanitarian effort, but it does not tell much about what was going on at the time that would call for another nation to come in and “take over.”

What I learned from this film is very simple. Sometimes we have to learn to break the routine. The thing that made this event so bad was the fact that the people of Somali had an idea of what to expect from the US Army and because they knew the formation that they would take, it made it easier for them to attack. This in turn, which was supposed to be an advantage, turned into a disadvantage. So if I learned anything, it would be to always prepare for the worse and plan for two scenarios.

Naggine Georges, Blog Entry Extra Credit: Voting

When I take the time to look back at the process that I went through in order to vote during the 2016 Primary Election, I realize that this year’s process was considerably easy compared the process that I have gone through in the past. This was not my first time voting, but I was my first time voting via the absentee ballot during the primary. This experience was not as exciting as my past experiences at the polls. I just had the ballot in front of me. I really did not think much of the ballot when it was in front of me. I did not get the sense of “oh my sweet baby Jesus, I’m voting” that I got every other time I went into the polls to go and vote.

I participated in the Democratic Primary for South Florida. To be honest, I did not speak to anyone about voting this year. In the past, I was very vigilant to ensure that everyone in my household votes, but this time around, I did not care much to find out if anyone went to vote. As for who I selected, I really looked into what they had to offer. This year, I feel as though the election for President of the United States has really been a game. Who would have thought that the American people would make such a travesty of something as fundamental as the selection of our nation’s leader?

So here is how my voting process went. I just sat on the floor in my bedroom, opened up the ballot and bubbled in my selection. Once I made my selection, I put the ballot in the envelope and sealed it. I signed the area necessary and was ready to send off my ballot. At this point, my sister, Courtney, asked me why was it that she could actually see my ballot through the envelope and at that moment, I realized that I had messed up. I forgot to put the ballot into the yellow-orange sleeve that is provided. So I had to reopened my envelope, place the ballot and sleeve inside and re-seal the envelope ensuring that all the lines of my signature matches up. I think that was the single most interesting thing about my voting process this time around. I did not even get a sticker! Bummer!

N.Georges Blog Entry #4: Church and State

Before watching the videos, I honestly did not think there was much of a difference between the meaning of “Religious Liberty” and “Religious Freedom.” My opinion the real difference between those two terms honestly lies behind the actual act of and expressing of religion. By that I mean that religious liberty has to deal with expressing which religion a person chooses to believe or expressing that they do not believe in religion altogether. Religious freedom, on the other hand, has to do more with the ability to actually act on their religion. For example, a person chooses to be a Christian and in being a Christian, they choose to follow the doctrine of that religion. It is their freedom to do what is written in the Bible and to follow the commandments. Given that the United States of America were founded on freedoms, it really helped me realize the difference within the two.  

The videos that I watched on religious liberty has some really interesting concepts that where shown. In the video entitled “Religious Liberty under Attack” had to do with Hobby Lobby. There was a Supreme Court case in regards to contraceptives that were part of Obamacare. What I learned from the video was that due to their religious liberty, they felt as though it was their rights to choose not to provide contraceptives for the workers as it is against their religion. There were two other videos that spoke on the happenings in Indiana with the passing of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Many people poked fun at the idea behind the passing of this act.

To be quite honest, the situation in Indiana is really touchy because one side feels as though they are losing their first amendment rights with include the freedom of religion, but others feel as though that even with the freedom of religion, they should not be forced to go against things in a religious doctrine.

The way in which I connect this to lessons in our actual class goes back to the foundation of this country that we call America. Think about it. Our founding fathers came to the United States for freedom. And to think that people are now being punished for acting on their freedom is absurd. Now, I’m not saying that we need to go wild and allow for everyone to do whatever they please, to whomever, but we really need to reevaluate what it we are really attempting to cover-up.

My views on this issue with church and state is that they should be separate. The only thing that really grinds my gears is the fact that many religious groups pick and choose what they want and do not want to follow, and it paves way for destruction as a person can easily switch up and go against or for something that they originally were for or against. Also, in regards to the situation in Indiana, I feel as though the government should not get involved in things like that. Look at a company like Chick-fil-a. They are open about their beliefs and people choose for themselves if they want to eat there or not. There are many other companies out there that can “make a cake” and if you don’t find one, open one yourself and profit off of that untapped market.

N.Georges Blog Entry #3: Coming To America

So for this blog, I was given the topic of the United States and Mexico Border. This topic was pretty interesting in the sense that I never actually think about the western United States at all. With that being said, to see all the commotion in regards to the border between the United States and Mexico made me feel a bit indifferent, not to say that I am heartless in any way shape or form, but for me I feel as we all are migrants, some legal, some illegal. Many people who migrate here to the United States from any other country are hard workers. They are usually the individuals who come to the US for a taste of the land of opportunity and really make an opportunity for themselves through small businesses and things of that nature.  

In regards to the topic of the actual border, the short clips gave me more of a better understand of what all the fuss is about.  At the end of the day, there is huge chunk of tax dollars that are being used to create the border and to see that only a small portion of the actual border is actually completed is really baffling. All the millions of dollars being spent on something that is supposed to help “keep the immigrants out” is actually not doing any such thing. Then there is the fact that some areas of the border is so ineffective that literally one can walk over the border into the US which is something that I disagree with because if the money is being spent, but there is nothing to show for it, why waste the energy on it. Yes I understand, over population, but at the end of the day this is the “Land of Opportunity.”

Some issues that were brought up as a result of the topic were the cost or building and maintaining the wall, wildlife, and the passage port. With building the wall, it would cost money to maintain the wall itself as well as border patrol officers to remain on site to ensure that there are no activity happening around the borderline. Then there is also the idea behind the wildlife. If the wall is built, how will animals be able to mate with other animals on the other side or get the food and water that is needed? Finally, the video addressed the actual port where people come through with forged documents or hide in the trunk of vehicles to get to the US.

When I think about how this relates to what we are learning in class right now, I think about the first migrants coming to America not knowing what to expect, the fight for power, and the actual separation of land among England. Spain, and France. This caused my strongest reaction because I think to myself like, we want to shut immigrants out of a nation that was built on immigration itself. A lot of times, people tend to forget where they came from and that can be dangerous. There is also the cost! That is really something to think about, is it worth the cost to build the wall if there is no fool-proof way to ensure that no one comes the United States illegally?

N. Georges Blog Entry #2: Film

I chose to watch the short film “American Red and Black: Stories of Afro-Native Identity. This film was very interesting to me. Topic being addressed in this film was the idea behind Native Americans and African Americans and how they were to identify. When I watch the film, I really did not think about how people or children from multiple nationalities had such a difficult time trying not only to identify themselves but also being accepted by members of a given nation. The film follows many individuals that helps shed some light on the prejudices experience by both Afro-Native Americans. There is notion that Natives are not very accepting of Africans or Indians of African descent.

To be quite honest, I was really shocked at the way Native American Indians were not very accepting of Afro-Native Americans. Minty, a lady in the film recalled growing up mixed race and how she was asked “Which one of your grandmothers then is unworthy of you recognizing her?” When I listened to that question I was like “Why would someone ask a child that?” then I understood that though both nations are considered minority, one nation felt more superior to the other. I never actually thought that people had that mindset, but then again, I am pretty naïve. Minty even went further and saying that she was not accepted in the African American community as she was not considered African enough and urged that people stop with the jokes, “Oh she has good hair, she must be Indian.”

I do believe that there is some bias in the film toward the Native Americans. The Native American, especially the grandmothers, were always depicted as strong people, but not much was said about their African American partners. Not much was said at all, as if the other person did not face any persecution for going outside their nationality.

In regards to blind spots, if the sole goal of the filmmaker was to discuss only the Indian Nation, they were straightforward and hit the mark. The film gave many different perspectives as to how life was for the Indian people. I really like the idea of interviewing both men and women as well as children who know their identity but are often mistaken for another. The story that made me feel as though the filmmaker had reached his mark was Sequoyah. He talked about being in elementary school and having to describe himself and he called himself an orange person because that is the closet to his skin color. He even went as far as explaining how his Puerto Rican friend was yellow, and his African American friend was brown etc. It made, for me, that nation to seem more real. To see that they also had some sort offended or difficulty made me realize that not just African Americans were mistreated.

Questions I have for the filmmaker would gear more towards finding out how the chief and leaders of the Indians reacted to the interracial interactions. I understand that they did not agree, but were the grandmothers/fathers of these Afro-Native Americans outcast by the chiefs or were they understanding and allowed for it to happen without any discussion. Basically I want to know what kind of actions were taken in these instances.
