artoo has reached the point of individuality in his programming where he doesn’t refer to humans / other species as his ‘masters.’ instead he tends to put them in categories such as strangers, associates, enemies, companions, etc. in particular, he views the relationship between pilot and droid as a partnership, and categorizes anakin and luke as his companion / partner. this tendency is liable to cause him a bit of trouble from time to time if dealing with a hostile being who understands his lack of subservience, but that’s not about to stop him.

so anyways I think what I’m gonna do in terms of dialogue and stuff is describe the beeps and provide a translation and it’s up to you whether your muse understands artoo word for word like threepio does or just kinda gets a general impression of what he’s saying.

since coming out of low power mode, artoo has had little time to appraise this new rebellion. now that things are finally settling down on the base, he has a chance to get himself acquainted with this generation’s band of freedom fighters, and he makes it a point to seek out one pilot in particular. an excited beep - [ you are the companion of the beebee unit ] rolling forward, the astromech leans himself backwards so as to point his lens at the human. a softer series of beeps, a quiet whistle - [ you helped obtain the map to retrieve my companion. thank you. ]
