oh anon. stepping right into my hell pit. ok. ok. lets think together in this hypothetical (real life) of them being lesbians / sapphics / etc. (ill use she/him pronouns for them #yay) (this is just me rambling so it's possible my ideas won't align with yours or anybody else's and that's chill as fuck i think. ok. and its long as fuck cause god forbid i know to shut up man. man. whatever.) i want to dwell more into how i see butch paddy. paddy mayne i believe is a butch but he in particular would lean more into what is 'traditional' and appearance commonality in men, social even, he'd lean hardcore into masculine but he also would lean into referring to himself with 'man' 'guy' etc. he'd find immense appeal to the masculine. like on a real note masc ≠ men it's just that he has an like. affinity to connect the two as close as possible while denying the role of men within it. like its that rebellious aspect just turned the fuck up. butch4butch king. i think he would be the most genderqueer about it but i also think he'd sort of want other butches around her to be even more masc, to be similar if not exact like him. cause a big part of his characterization is the whole like. note of othering he does and how he sees people and how that gets put into question and just. everything. the way he compares and asserts what he deems / wants. he's not socially intoned and he's very like. not as socialized with other people as he could be - but he also immensely KNOWS people and what he SEES of people. actions are easier. words are easier. but having to contribute himself or indulge in communication or communion that isn't just focusing on war itself or 'madness' or pure wild soldier behavior he just straight up doesn't enjoy. he doesn't WANT to be like the rest of majors and the posh soldiers he knows / hears from / experiences. this is all connecting to his appeal of traditionally masculine things imo!! not to mention the escape from societal expectation JUST so he could be 'mad' as he is made to be. not to mention the sheer expertise of having to be apart of 'higher ranked' social groups and 'role in war' and to still be herself regardless!! to still not 'fall in line' and fake to like it how everyone else does. granted its more a focus to do in the sas but like, he is the most known for it / it's his whole ordeal when other militia men are speaking about him. eoin mcgonigal would be butch, i don't think he would resonate w femme at all, i do think COMPARED to paddy she would seem "less butch like" but she genuinely would be equal as fuck with paddy on the butch scale. they're the same to me. i think he'd resonate w handsomeness and prettiness unlike paddy though. i think he could be a dead wife to paddy but it to not revoke his butchness. also in the last instance we see eoin (in paddys hallucinations / imaginations / etc. basically how paddy imagines him) we see him with facial hair - and paddy in my mind is #traditional.. so i do think this could deadass correlate to paddy masculinizing eoin in his vision of him. augustin jordan would be a futch. i can see it now. to me he's very middle ground or no ground as a whole in identity (i hc him as nonbinary). politics wise, i absolutely think he would connect to both and also would want to fulfil both of those roles within butchfemme dynamics / circles. i can see her genuinely balancing on either identities be it femme or butch and a concoction of both or 'neither'. like he could indulge in both. he would identity with futch with like, casualness and contentment. smoke lingering.

david stirling. oh david stirling. tomboy femme. he's kinda just there gender / presentation wise and belief wise. i think he would personally see himself as butch - it's just that this wouldn't be a shared sentiment on others behalf of him nor is it something he himself genuinely connects to fully? the conflict between him and paddy also could absolutely connect - the class difference, the complicated emotions and feels paddy has about david as a whole but he stills lets him in and lets her do whatever. say whatever. david and paddy have A LOT of conflicts that are sprewed and made from the sheer difference between them and there's the question of how paddy feels about david and how he's connected to the 'posh' people he genuinely hates and how david connects them to be the same or how he connects to the wild life paddy is apart of. how he sees himself as someone that's wild too. how paddy lowk disagrees with it. someone needs to do a drawing of catty major stirling standing over a sitting paddy but like in a magazine cover kind of way where's it prompted as salacious. amen. jock lewes would be femme, like a touch-me-not femme if we're going into specifics. would be known to be more dominant than the rest. she wouldn't be a flapper girl femme but she would be a suit femme. yeah. he breaks the norm because he's not the "typical" kind of femme. another thing that makes me think this is because even in the start he's sort of 'the weird one' in the group despite them all being frankly odd as hell. one femme gazillion butches basically. mike sadler would be butch just period. that's grand-butch right there. johnny cooper would be butch in my mind palace and i do think he'd be newish to this identity business but he's eager! and he's immediately learning. a giant part of her character within the show was newness but rampant eagerness to be apart of this group and the groups preferred 'wildness' which he enjoys immensely. so i do think that would correlate the same way in identity. if anything he'd be the happiest butch in the group. he wants communion in something that isn't explored to him typically, and he is so so into it being something he could be apart of with others. it's like finally being understood AND having a place / group to be apart of.

reg seekings would be a butch but the specifics of a speakesy club owner butch. slightly criminal runaway butch. him and paddy have the same butch different font sort of vibe about them. neither are full on doms but like to partake. oop.

jim almonds my friend jim almonds. femme. moustache stays, utter femme. i see her the same way i see jock and i think he'd by proxy be femme too. fat beautiful femme. they're both doms but jim does it in a different way which sort of ensures that jock is more of the top / the lead. i also think he doesn't always dom either. scratching my chin. butch switch? perhaps perhaps

a thing to note is that like. these are roles / labels / politics you take on, they are values, etc, and i absolutely believe these characters would specifically indulge in them because of the whole political aspect the show prompts regarding them + the message it's telling (and the 'othering' of the sas we see done by them and by other militia). also there's the fact that none of these guys are #staying home (apart from david) so we have to make do with that. i don't believe people think about possible conflicts in these identities they just go "butch" or "femme" or they think appearance is a major part of it all. they think its just appearance.. and! appearance IS a part of it! but its also political and a role and values and belief and so much. there's depth at play. on top of that language of appearance and identity is evolving too.
