dude seeing these Mega high quality images of the surface of mars that we now have has me fucked up. Like. Mars is a place. mars is a real actual place where one could hypothetically stand. It is a physical place in the universe. ITS JUST OUT THERE LOOKING LIKE UH IDK A REGULAR OLD DESERT WITH LOTS OF ROCKS BUT ITS A WHOLE OTHER PLANET?

Also: Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko

So it’s not quite snowing on Churyumov–Gerasimenko, unfortunately; the white specks are artifacts of cosmic rays impinging on the CCDs in the camera, as well as a rotating starfield in the background (since the comet is spinning). A few specks could be dust. But, holy shit, that’s the surface of a comet. That’s a spot you could in theory cling to for dear life sit down on. The Cliffs of Comet 76p are a place. 

If that isn’t the neatest shit I don’t know what is.

Tried to take pictures with my A24 5G of the syars in Pro mode, not down to a science yet but wow.. this is facing towards the southern sky.

The milky way galaxy with actual colour in the stars! The right image has better focus, and you can make out the Eta Carinae Nebula region, Theta Carinae cluster, Omega Centauri, and you can kinda spot the Jewel box! There are probably others that i haven't spotted yet too!

I am so thankful for being in an astronomy club, I would've never thought to have done this..

Settings:

ISO: 400

Exp. Time: 10s

Whitebalance: 5900K

Equipment:

Phone camera (12MP?)

Water bottle to hold it (no seriously)

This was in Bortle ~2 conditions, i'll try a longer exposure from my backyard tonight if the conditions are good.

Update: took some more photos from home, played aroujd with the ISO and Whitebalance a bit. Used a tripod too this time.

Four large craters on the Moon // Wilco Kasteleijn

From top to bottom left: Arzachel, Alphonsus, Ptolemaeus, and Albategnius.

Arzachel crater is named after the Arabic instrument maker Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm ibn Yaḥyā al-Naqqāsh al-Zarqālī al-Tujibi (1029 - 1100). His Latinized name was Arzachel, meaning "the engraver." He wrote books about constructing instruments for calculating the positions of the planets.

Alphonsus crater is named after King Alfonso X of Castile (1221-1284). He was sometimes nicknamed the Astrologer for the creation of the Alfonsine tables used to compute the position of the planets.

Ptolemaeus crater is named after the Greek philosopher Claudius Ptolemy (c. 100 - 170). Among his many accomplishments is the Almagest, the earliest surviving complete book on ancient astronomy. It also provided mathematical "proof" for the geocentric nature of the universe.

Albategnius crater is named after Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Jābir ibn Sinān al-Raqqī al-Ḥarrānī aṣ-Ṣābiʾ al-Battānī (bef. 858 - 928), one of the greatest and most famous astronomers of the medieval Islamic world. It was the accuracy of his data that later led Nicolaus Copernicus to consider a heliocentric model of the universe.

The star Navi, γ Cassiopeiae, is named for the American astronaut Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom who flew in the Gemini 3 mission and died in the onboard fire of Apollo 1. The star's name is his middle name spelled backwards.
