* saw a post ranking tmasc noelle names and one of them was kris and it beamed an extremely funny scenario into my head when combined with the tfem ralsei changing her name to susie jokes. this is the ultimate best case scenario to me now.

This is not a particularly original thought (I've probably made this exact post before myself) but one of the bleaker vast cultural gulfs out there is and likely shall remain the one between 'material children can understand and engage with' and 'material guardians and gatekeepers are comfortable thinking about their children engaging with'.
The beautiful but brief period where video stores just threw every animated movie in the same section and vast numbers of parents just assumed all cartoons were for kids was a little golden age in this regard. We need to come up with a new way to trick middle class helicopter parents into letting their 7-year-olds watch Watership Down again.
Watership Down is a children's story. Like it was specifically written for children. So the movie is for children as well. I want to point this out because people seem to think Watership Down, specifically, is some secretive Not For Kids But I Saw It Anyway thing just because there's death and violence in it. And like. I think y'all are being really weird about this story ngl. Nobody does this with the Hobbit or any other fantasy story with similar situations of violence. Y'all are just really weird about the rabbits!
Animation being assumed to automatically be for kids is a bad thing for animation. It forced animation to only be for children and constrains animators who want to do more with their medium.
But I also think that children deserve to read and watch things they can handle, and have the right to actual real discussion and guidance from adults when there's something they need that for. Unfortunately the G in PG and PG13 is often completely ignored.
There's a lot of stories that are specifically for children that I see people assume were not: Watership Down is somehow chief among them, but also The Hobbit, Out of the Dust, Bud Not Buddy, Animorphs, Neverending Story and others are examples of books for children that handle very grim and difficult subjects, such as war, death, grief, accidents, guilt, racism, homelessness, injustice, fascism, gaslighting, and abuse. Frankly it's really weird that people think kids shouldn't know about these things in fiction, considering how many kids experience one or more of these in their real lives. And this doesn't go into the cartoons that handle similar subjects.
imagine youre kris and youre all reserved and cagey and you dont want to tip off your new best friend susie as to how much your parents divorce fucked with you. and then all your adventures take her through divorce themed fantasy lands constructed by your subconscious
which could mean nothing.
Guess what day it is.
