I see this stuff all the time as an EMT. And itâs actually even worse. For chronic conditions like diabetes, emergency rooms only fix the immediate crisis (if possible). They donât handle the underlying problem â thatâs a primary care providerâs job. So if you canât afford primary care (local free clinic? great! now how will you afford the medication they prescribe/specialist they refer you to?) the untreated problem will cause the exact same (or increasingly worse) crisis over and over again.
An emergency room canât kick you out until youâre medically stable, regardless of ability to pay. So who pays for these repeated ER visits? It gets passed along to the rest of us. Some conservative politicians even claim this means we donât need universal healthcare because we already have it! But this kind of âuniversal healthcareâ means weâre paying the absolute highest price possible (cause emergency care is expensive as hell) for the absolute lowest level of healthcare possible (cause again, ERs fix the immediate crisis, not the underlying problem).
By refusing to say that ERs should just throw the poor out to die on the sidewalk (cause they like to pretend they have morals), but also refusing to support basic healthcare to prevent treatable conditions from escalating into emergencies in the first place, opponents of universal healthcare are literally choosing to pay more (and forcing the rest of us to, as well) for their ârightâ to stand by idly while the poor suffer. Itâs Insane Troll Logic at its finest â we could not invent a more nonsensical system, even if we tried.
