you say youve moved on but bring it up every time you wanna guilt trip me and we still wonder why i left home asap?? i didnt even do anything wrong god forbid i was a mentally ill teenager?? stop pretending to care about me?? i hate you??
i couldnt pick a sotd so i decided to review some of my favorite songs on my favorite album, and these contain mentions of sexual assult, homophobia ++ transphobia, and abuse. if you read till the very end thank you🥹
if you see any spelling mistakes no u didnt.
5 - PURPLE HEARTS
if i had to reccomend someone a song to figure out the theme and meaning of this album, it would be purple hearts. purple hearts is the foundation of this album, and it sort of mentions every theme on each different track. from understanding how detrimental emotional ++ psychological trauma can be, and how it can affect a whole bloodline. following up with we cry together, its kind of a backstory on that track ( cs half the time they js saying fuck u nigga nd fuck u bitch🥹 )
summer really hates it here🥹
4 - WE CRY TOGETHER
okay so if you listen to this song without any context im so sorry😭 i played it for my boyfriend for the first time and he even got confused after i explained the context. in this song, it elaborares on how arguements are never fully resolved. it shows that couples, friends & family avoid talking about issues directly and choose to beat around the bush by doing acts that someone would appreciate ( in this song, they use the example of a couple and intercourse ). the two bicker and bicker, never fully resolve the problem, and end up hanging out together like nothing is wrong. i truly believe this song embodies the true issues couples are facing, and whitneys voice over really added perspective into this song
3 - COUNT ME OUT
this song switches a bit more and talks about personal growth. it mentions themes of going to therapy, learning to love yourself by gaining self respect & acceptance. i also believe that this song is rooted deeply for kendrick. the majority of this album refrences generational trauma, something that many tracks discuss. in this song in particular, even though it refrenced not stated, i believe the reasoning behind him learning to "wipe away my ego, dodge my pride" all stems from his religious beliefs and how he began to hold god so close to his heart he realized his ways were wrong. he realized the way he presented himself, accepted himself, and respected himself was all incorrect🥹
2 - MOTHER I SOBER
one of the deepest songs on the album, this song talks about generational trauma in depth. kendrick elaborates on how his mother was taken advantage of in chicago before they got to compton. he explains that when this happened, she didnt talk about it much, but carried the trauma for years on end. this abuse changed the whole family, and caused everyone to gain some sort of generational trauma. and his mother, traumatized by her past, always made sure to ask kendrick if he was okay. if anything of that nature happened to him. those questions began to haunt him when he figured out why she was asking ( her past ). but not only did kendrick speak on his own personal issues, he also talked about this being a sad reality in the black community. he mentiones the way that other rappers hide behind tattoos, chains, diamonds & accessories to appeal okay, but in hiding, they are going through the unimaginable. in the end of the song, whitney, his fiancee, tells kendrick that "you broke a generational curse" by learning to heal, and move on from an issue that burdened him for many years.
1 - AUNTIE DIARIES
holy fuck i rant my ass off here💔
this is my favorite song on the album for many reasons. first reason is the breakdown of his uncle and cousin. in this song, we learn about his aunt. he describes his understanding of his aunt transitioning into his uncle--" my auntie is a man now". as a kid, kendrick was cool with it. he expressed how nice it was when his uncle gave him haircuts, when he came around to pick kendrick up from school, etc. but he always wondered why his other uncles wanted to fight him, or didnt agree with his standpoints. his mother always told him that there was no telling, and it was probably because of "how many girls he got", etc ( they were also depicted as homophobic ). but in the end, everyone was cool with it and eventually accepted him for who he became.
then, theres kendricks cousin. kendricks cousin comes out as transgender, mtf "demetrius is maryanne now". ( note that when his cousin came out, kendrick was a teenager. a teenager who blatantly dropped fbombs because "he didnt now any better" ) everyone acts surprised by this news, but kendrick new. he explained noticing her love for dolls at such a young age. how she would enjoy things typically deemed as "feminine". i couldnt decypher any moments of his families reaction to this news, but he did mention the religious guilt his cousin felt. we learned that his cousin was very religious and believed in god more than kendrick did himself. so, on easter sunday, as "mr preacher man" was speaking his homily, he began insluting kendricks cousin. belittling her soley based on the fact that she was transgender. completely disregarding the fact that she was so beyond religious, devoted time in her life to christ. all he saw was "sin". kendrick, noticing how disgusting this was, called him out. asked him why he couldnt notice her love for god. why he disregarded it. kendricks cousin thanked him, smiling at him. and that was the day kendrick chose humanity over religion.
after this, kendrick explains a time he was on tour and brought a fan up to sing with him. he called her up to sing an line that included the fslur. the fan called kendrick out, explaining that in whichever way you chose to say it, its still wrong as a cishet man. in the end, kendrick realizes his mistakes and understands the issues in saying this term, understanding the deeper meaning behind it ( ps. he says it in the song😓 )
my absoloute favorite song lyric ever comes from this song, "the laws of the land or heart, what's greater?"
