graham stared at her blankly as her sarcasm shone through, it wasn’t athena without the dripping sarcasm tone that was directed and made for him; absentmindely, he asked for it most of the time. “okay, damn we’re getting seafood. you don’t have to tell me twice.” he unlocked the doors and stepped out and leaned against the car door once it slammed closed. graham took in his surroundings, wondering if it’d be the last time he’d see this. there was always the future of returning, returning back to the villas maybe home to someone else but the surrounding area would be a welcome back to the familiarity he picked up on. “i kind of want grilled salmon with spinach salad.”

Stepping out of the car, Athena closed the door before realizing that she didn’t shut it hard enough and repeated the process again with a little more force, her lips pressed together in some sort of half smile as she looked up at Graham on the other side. She wondered how he felt about everything, how his life seemed to be finally falling into place. For that, she was pleased. “You had me up until spinach salad. Why, are you balding or something?” she teased, heading in the direction of the seafood restaurant. After the first half of the trip, Athena began tiring of her usual craving for poke bowls, but she never seemed to outgrow her taste for seafood in general. “Table for two please,” she requested upon entering through the doors, holding up two fingers.

turning off the engine to their rented villa’s car, graham sat back in his seat as the ac flowed in from the vent; gently tapping at his hair as he turned to his best friend beside him. now that he thinks back, they had been at a completely different point in this car once; once full of tears and a fight he had never expected either of them to have and now they sat side by side having their last lunch outing in hawaii. it wasn’t the end for them, not for these two. he sighed and stared off blankly to the food shops they’ve arrived at, “are you feeling meat today or seafood?” graham asked as he went to unlock the door and retrieve the keys from its slot. “i’ll do whatever you decide and if you say oh.. i don’t know, you pick, i’ll drive us around and we’ll go eat ice at home.” he half teased although his expression told otherwise.

Tracing random shapes on the empty space of her seat with her finger, Athena sat in silence trying to process the fact that their trip was finally coming to an end. A year had come, gone, and changed her in more ways than expected, but she was finding it difficult to wrap her head around the idea that it was all over. It was almost a year ago when she found herself sitting in the exact same spot under entirely different circumstances. So much has changed between the two since then, but the commitment to their friendship never faltered. That, and the inability to restrain herself from giving Graham a hard time for kicks and giggles. “What kind of a question is that?” she scoffed, pushing herself up from her reclined position. “We’re about to leave Hawaii and you’re asking me to pick between meat and seafood? On an island?” A soft burst of laughter left the girl’s lips as she turned her head toward Graham, her expression shifting to match his in seriousness. “Hmm, okay, let’s go home and eat ice since you can’t read the ‘I want ahi tuna’ written on my forehead in permanent marker,” Athena joked, unbuckling her seat belt.

“is it really?” he gave her a look of uncertainty, but it was soon broken as he gasped at her small action. “OOO, you got skills, chae? you got skills?” a laugh left his lips as he set his belongings down on the nearby bench. “let’s see how you dribble. you know dribble?” he asked, pretending to bounce a ball with his hand. arnold gestured with his head towards the hoop and began leading her towards it, while keeping an eye on how she handled the ball. “so when you’re dribbling, you wanna use one hand at all times, ‘cause if you use two, they’ll call a double dribble. you can switch between hands, but never have two hands on the ball at the same time. you also wanna use your fingertips when dribbling the ball, opposed to your palm, ‘cause it’ll give you more control.” he hoped his instructions weren’t too overwhelming, as he knew the language of sports could easily lose some people. it happened every time he talked to jude.

when they reached the free throw line, he stood with his arms crossed and nodded toward the hoop with a smile. “now shoot.” he said. “if you make it, you’re a pro. if you don’t make it, you’re a pro in the making. either way, you’re gonna be a pro so there’s nothing to be afraid of.”

Chuckling in response to his enthusiasm, Athena pressed the basketball between her palms as she waited for further instruction. “Do I know dribble?,” she scoffed, half-jokingly. “What do you take me for, Arnie, a fool? I know what a dribble is. I was reading about it just a little while ago.” Following his lead, she began to dribble the ball, initially attempting to use the entire surface area of her hand. More force, she assumed. She tried to keep note of each piece of information he dished out to her, experimenting as he led her closer to the hoop. Athena hadn’t even noticed the way her eyebrows furrowed in concentration, solely focused on the dribbling. “Fingertips, one hand, switch,” she mumbled to herself. “Fingertips... one hand... switch...” Losing control of the ball for a moment, she exclaimed a sharp, “Oh!” as it bounced off of the top of her foot and rolled across the court. “I— I’ll go get it.”

“Wait, right now?” She hugged the retrieved basketball to her chest, turning to face Arnold. “Aren’t we going to do some training... or something? You want me to just go for it? Is that legal?” Tilting her head to the side, she looked at him for a moment more before realigning herself to shoot the ball. She took a deep breath, practically holding it in as she executed what one would call a “granny shot.” The ball ricocheted off of the rim, routed to strike her in the forehead had she not ducked in time. “So...” she started, rising from her crouched position on the ground. “Thoughts?”
