Hootsuite Module 3

After completing The Hootsuite module and client project 3 I feel like I have a better understanding now of how to utilize tools and advancements for social media platforms to gather information and expand within their community. Although these ideas and suggestions are provided I feel that they can be easily misinterpreted and a lot of companies won't use them and do a full effect. I found it interesting how much of an impact simple small videos, gifts, in other interactive engagements can have with people on social media. It has given me I'm more of a better understanding of how companies work no matter the size big or small. I think that is very important for all companies to take this into effect when wanting to improve their social media presence through an audit.

The Legal Side Of Big Data

Hello all,

When businesses are using big data, they should be aware that no matter how protected their data may seem it is always out for exposure. This has been proven on multiple occasions with having massive companies, such as target and Home Depot Customer and software getting hacked. With that, millions of people’s memberships and information are now in the hands of hackers.

It is important for big businesses understand what is at risk when it comes to big data hacking.

Consumers should be aware of whatever they put down on paper or whatever they sign up for online is easily accessible by a hacker.

The best way to balance the opportunities and threats presented by development of the big data should be in that be required to give out so much information for justice simple subscription. On the business side of things, it is important to have a business plan for prevention of hackers in big data.

Athletes are becoming more than just athletes! They are no longer just athletic superstars; they are cultural icons whose impacts and success on social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook have transcended their fields. Today’s athletes have a chance to promote themselves and outside of their fields of expertise.

I completely agree with how athletes can brand themselves by using social media. It's almost insane to think about the influential power these athletes have over the younger crowd particularly athletes. There are some college kids who are 19, 20, 21 years old who are worth north of $500,000 and a couple athletes who are worth $1,000,000 right now at the collegiate level. It's unbelievable to see the growth that social media has done with athletes. It was bound to happen.

Getting Overnight Success

Getting famous overnight is starting to become a more common thing. If you go on TikTok you can see thousands of videos they have over 100,000 likes and over 1,000,000 views on just one video. Even though the video you had had no intention to become a viral video, It is becoming easier and easier for people to understand the algorithms that go in social media to get the most views. For example, new and upcoming singers, podcasters, an artist post videos and snippets of their product and display it out on social media. It is becoming a very common way to get your name or brand out there.

Personal Social Media Consultant

Throughout this course, we will be learning more and more beneficial information about social media in the professional world. In return, we can take lessons learned and apply them to our own social media presence. I plan on applying a few lessons to my current social media presence in order to improve my professionalism for the future. I first want to plan on avoiding posting or reposting explicit content to my social media accounts. I also want to avoid making comments on controversial topics through social media. As a step of action, I have deleted any post that I do not want a future employer seeing. I also want to start posting more professional content. This means posting career updates or current life updates that seem appropriate for specific social media platforms. I can improve my content through being conscious to what I post as well as applying lessons and strategies learned from this course to any post that I make. I also plan to start being more active on LinkedIn, a social media platform specified for creating and building professional business relationships. I can begin being more active by interacting with my peers through comments and reposts as well as by posting career updates or news that I find interesting. I am grateful to learn social media skills this semester so that I can help improve not only my social media presence but my client’s as well.

My Social Media Presence

Throughout the course of this class so far, I have noticed how little I use social media professionally. Other than this class, I have never used social media for any class projects, let alone for any business purpose. I have accounts on all of the popular social media apps and haven't posted on any of them in over a year. I think an excellent first step for me will be making a professional LinkedIn profile. As of the time of posting this, I do not have a LinkedIn profile, and I believe it will be very important to get a job in the future.

increasing knowledge about social media in the professional world

By increasing your knowledge about social media in the professional world, you an also become a consultant to yourself. What plans and strategies do you have to improve your professional social media presence? What have you done so far, and what will you do in the future?

My strategies and plans to improve my professional social media presence are to always be open-minded to new and innovative ideas. I plan on getting to know the company's schedule and important dates for me to have to prep for any posts or updates I might have to send to his clients or followers. What I have done so far for his company is to get to know his goals and understand where he sees his company going and where he wants to grow. After hearing his ideas, I asked him how he could describe his company and why it is better than others. When receiving all this information it was clear what I had to do to be successful. I plan on reaching out to different groups of people to get in contact with them to inform them what Athletic Preparation is all about and why they should choose this company over the others. I will also be making posts for open ideas on what they would like to see happen throughout the company. All will be taken into careful consideration before acting upon them of course but I want to build relationships with the customers to build a stronger connection with Athletic Preparation.

Qualities for a social media consultant

What, in your view, are the most important qualities for a social media consultant to have?

In my view, the most important quality for a social media consultant to have would be creativity. The role of a consultant is to provide new ideas and to complete tasks for the person who hired you that he/she could not do. In other words, you are the problem/opportunity solver. When completing the tasks, it is important to have a creative mind and imagination. Along with that, the other half of being a social media consultant is to listen and hear what improvements or suggestions the customers may have for the company. That is what I think are the most important qualities of becoming a social media consultant.

Big Data and Information Privacy

After watching the 60 minutes segment, “The Data Brokers” I can relate Big Data to information privacy. We live in a world where we post content online and give up information about ourselves without even knowing it. It’s hard to comprehend what little privacy that we have. Big Data is a huge reason why privacy is so limited nowadays due to the value that data holds. Business’s find that the data of the customers is more valuable than the product that they provide. This is what makes Big Data such a powerful tool due to the value it can hold to any database, and it is very easy for the wrong types of people to get ahold of it. With such a limit in privacy once you post online, Big Data collects that information and can correlate it to anything in your life. When people access this information with ill intentions, your personal life can be displayed to all different types of crowds. As a result, your career, relationships, and dignity could all be harmed. This is discomforting to know that much of my personal information can be viewed by those that I do not know or want to know my personal information. It is also frustrating to know that businesses that I provide personal information will be more than willing to sell the data received from my contribution to that business.

In terms of defense to this invasion of privacy, I do not believe that there is one other than to just stop using electronics in general. While that tactic could help, I do not think it is manageable as it is imperative to have some sort of technology to be able to communicate and interact with peers and loved ones for all individuals in society. After viewing this video, I know that there is no way to prevent Big Data from being able to access your personal information. I fear that this issue will only get worse in the future.

I enjoyed reading your Tumblr post today on big data and information privacy. I like how you included the results of your information being displayed out there for anyone to see. I've yet to see the word career in anyone's posts which had me thinking of how someone's career can be jeopardized by a social media post. I used to have a teacher in high school who got fired because he posted unpolite inappropriate things on his social media which was easily accessible to anyone. I think we can both take something away from that. I also agree that there is no way to prevent big data from being able to access your personal information. It is just something that we are going to have to learn to live with.

After reading the article “The Internet’s Original Sin” and watching Maciej Ceglowski’s talk, I think I liked Ceglowski’s idea that data collection is based upon fear. The example he used was September 11th and how the government basically just asked the telecom company to tap their data base and they let them. The most common way that businesses influence surveillance and data gathering is through pop-up ads. Companies such as Facebook collected your data and sold it to other companies in order to produce ads that would appeal to you based on your search history and app usage. As said in the article, advertising became the default business model on the web because of its simplicity and ability to easily market to investors.

“The Internet's Original Sin" and Maciej Ceglowski's talk

After reading” The Internet's Original Sin” and watching Maciej Ceglowski's talk, it is clear to see that the internet business models influence surveillance through data that is being accessed by humans. These companies are finding easier and quicker ways to gather our information. A couple of examples of this are the sites and ads that we click on, along with the information that we are putting out there on websites. Further on with the reading and watching the talk, both had similar statements about personal information being accessed through the Internet. These companies that hold information on you and what you look up on the Internet can push you to start to click on and watch things that you currently enjoy. Even if you only see something or click on something on accident or for enjoyment, constant pop-up ads and trending posts will be shared with you. With these companies, they can track how long you've looked at something and whether you have had a positive or negative interaction with the poster ad. With this information breaking the Internet it was all based to be a free source and tool for information. Now, it is being used and sold to other data companies to keep files on us. I think that surveillance within our world today should make some rules and regulations. We can find out where anyone lives if we just trace back the cameras to where they left with us knowing that they can. With our information being out there for any company to breach or any sort of government officials to find our information that we may not even know is terrifying.

Overall I think that our privacy is a privilege that we get to have as humans. Having that information that could be used in a company's data that we've never heard of is honestly scary. Those companies having the resources to cell and gain more information on us is in my opinion a true violation of our privacy. I think that people who can use the Internet should have a safe and enjoyable experience without having to worry about their personal information being leaked. And that starts with the government and the social media companies working together to protect us.

Big Data

After watching the 60-minute video, “The Data Brokers” and the class lecture I learned that big data is a very powerful source of information that we don’t even have control over. Through past classes, I’ve learned that the social media companies such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and TikTok have availability to our information from what we like or don’t like to what we want to see more often or never again. With the average citizen unaware of what kind of information is out there being used on them, thousands of data companies are out there to collect our data and sell it. This information about us can be anywhere from what we like to our personal problems or purchases. Our privacy as we know it is inexistent. Our personal information is out there for anyone to see and access, which is kind of scary. Companies don’t want to use American technology companies because of how easily accessible it is from the National Security Agency. I’ve noticed myself looking at a product such as golf clothes and clubs and later in that day or week seeing advertisements for those products.

When I think about myself using social media, I don't think of all the information that is out there based on me that can be easily accessed by any one of the big data companies. I feel that everyone who has a social media account or anyone who is thinking about getting a social media account should be aware of the information that will be provided to other companies solely based on yourself. Many data brokers and companies that we may never hear of are using our data to sell information about us, we should be well aware of what is getting put out there about us before these companies have time to profit off us. Together, we should always be aware of what we're looking up and how easily that information could be passed along.

Social Media Assignment Log

For my social media log assignment, I decided to look at how long I spend on certain applications. I observed my social media usage on Wednesday and was not surprised to see high usage on Instagram and Facebook because I worked that morning. Similarly, I use both for my part-time job and working as a campus manager for SouthbySea! My most used app was text messaging though. For Thursday, I tried to limit my time on texting, Instagram, and Facebook. Throughout the day it was hard to not be on those applications but was able to cut my usage down a ton. I enjoyed not being on phone and just being able to enjoy life. Additionally, my best friend surprised me Thursday so not being on my phone was a lot easier for me since we were catching up.

Social Media Experiment

For my experiment, I decided to do a full 24 “detox” of all social media platforms starting Thursday at 12:00 AM until Friday at 12:00 AM. The timing honestly was perfect, as I had a lot on my plate in terms of school and it really helped me focus on my work without distractions. The main social media platforms that consume my time are YouTube, Instagram and TikTok; and I surely felt these platforms trying to “pull” me back with countless notifications. While it was not necessarily easy to not use them, it felt good; my mind felt clear. Often what I am viewing on social media is not doing anything good for me, even in some instances putting me in a bad mood with all of the “doom and gloom” that these platforms highlight around the world. Without all of that, I finished my other class work with time to spare and had a good night playing basketball with my friends.

I hope to and can imagine myself using platforms like TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram less often over time; as I definitely do not think they help me accomplish anything. It was nice to not use those specific platforms, but I do not think all social media use is bad. I don't think cutting out something like YouTube would do much good for me; as there are so many interesting and educational videos to consume. Same thing for something like video games; as surely they can be a distraction if not used in moderation, but when used appropriately gaming keep me connected with friends that now live across the world, as well as introduce me to great new people.

Social Media Opinion

After watching both videos both Louis and Sherry Turkle have a clear understanding of the lone aspect of social media. Turkle who has been studying and has been doing research about the specific topic gives real analytic answers to why we are alone together which is named after one of her famous books. When Louis is getting interviewed by Conan, he gives a more real-life scenario of people who always have to check their phone no matter the case whether it's kids all around the world or while they're driving. although it is very clear to see both sides of this argument, they both came to the same conclusion that being alone is scary. Being alone is a common thing for humans that has slowly been pushed away ever since technology and social media has been a part of our lives.

Social media expirement

From my experiment I've decided to turn off all my notifications. With me seeing how much interaction I have on my phone just in one day kind of baffled me. What I wanted to do for this experiment and to prove to myself was that I don't have to look at my phone as often as I need to. So, I decided to turn off all my notifications. With this I've concluded that I've only spent an hour and 52 minutes on my phone through the entire day. I felt myself more concentrated on things I needed to do, I felt myself more energized and more focused in class. It was a lot easier for me to fall asleep without looking at my phone for 1/2 hour before I go to bed. It was also easy for me to wake up as well seeing that didn't have to respond to people or things that may have received the night before. I didn't want to delete all my social media because I knew that I would have an urge to re download them and check him. But I think knowing that they are very easily accessible to get connected with other people but not getting any notifications saying that someone had this contact in me made it a little bit easier to get through my day. It was a weird experience; I'm not going to lie. Social media and technology have been a part of my life at the perfect age where I was able to get a phone and get connected with people was when technology and social media really blew up. Yes, I wasn't around for the Facebook era but that was the only thing out there except for my space, now we have an easier and faster way to connect with others on multiple different platforms. If I wanted to see a picture of someone I would go to their Instagram, if I wanted to hear someone opinions I would go to their Twitter, if I wanted to see a video of this person, I would go to their Tic Tok. You couldn't do that back in 2012. I highly recommend this system to anyone whoever wants to have a day of clarity. Go ahead and set your notifications off I promise you; you will have a more productive day than you thought you would have.

TED talk week 1

In social media today you can put anything you want on social media. from the free press to the radio and television. The big changes have led the 21st century to let you consume for free. Social media has an automatic sense of awareness from helping to notice events. My reaction to this video is truly shocking to see the bigger picture of social media and how it can be used in many ways. helpful or hurtful, social media is constantly growing and will continue to do so if there is news. Instead of just receiving the news were able to reach back and out to anyone in the world.
