‘ choosing to protect ourselves is not failure ’

“That’s only partly true.” He’s not arguing for the sake of it (which is unusual, he knows). There’s an odd, underlying combination of tiredness and frantic energy to his words, something which is becoming more and more of a permanent fixture these days.
“I don’t think it is failure, most of the time. Like, we protect ourselves - and each other - because we know we can’t count on anyone else to do it, and there are so many things that they can do to hurt us that every time we get through them - every time we survive them - it’s a victory, not a failure. But… If people choose to protect themselves in ways that endanger other people, or at the cost of doing what is right… I’m not sure you can call that a victory. That’s just making shit worse for the people who can’t protect themselves.”
Maybe it’s funny to have such a considered, almost earnest response coming from a boy who is quickly becoming best known through the pages of Obsidian’s newspapers as a dangerous revolutionary. And maybe it’s funny to hear him speak of ‘doing what is right’, too; but while Strat’s moral compass is a little faulty, maybe, it is far from broken - especially with regard to the bigger picture.
He knows their methods aren’t perfect, knows their plans can be ill-formed and poorly executed, but if there is one thing that he believes, it’s that the Lost - that he - need to do all that they can to help both themselves and the rest of Obsidian’s population in the face of their very literal corporate overlords. He truly believes that they’re doing the right thing, if not necessarily always in the right way.But if notoriety provides him a platform with which to speak out against the workings of Falco Industries then he’ll embrace it, as long as his voice - their voices - are heard.
“If someone protects themselves at the expense of everyone else, how can you say that isn’t failure?”
