Atlas was a gem that Jamie still couldnât believe had the misfortune of landing in their lives. It was terrifying, at first, to see the condition heâd arrived in and know that things must be getting worse beyond these walls. But what could they do about it? The most radical thing he could think of was to band together, create their own families, and live the best damn lives possible because it was the last thing those bigots truly wanted to see. They didnât want to see happy couples, or best friends, or found families - no, they wanted grave stones so Jamieâd do everything in his power to prolong the inevitable and make the most of what they had for each wolf here. But especially his Hearts who were the most receptive to the offering.
And tonight that meant spoiling them with Atlasâ antics and bonfires, snacks, and booze.
Jamie moved closer to the makeshift âstageâ as Atlas got ready, resting his forearms on one of the pieces of wood and letting his feet swing around. âIf I donât make a quip about âbaringâ you being possible, what do I get?â Jamie asked mock-innocently before falling silent and letting Atlas do his thing. And personally, he felt this was a far better performance than the one heâd missed because this one was all for them. And because the wolves around them were happy to join in, with singing or dancing or howling as Jamieâs heart was doing things heâd thought itâd forgotten how to do.
His cheeks hurt form all the grinning heâd done over the course of the night but there was no holding back his delight as Atlas truly got into it before it too-soon and unfortunately came to an end. He wanted to pout about it being over but he was still filled with such warmth all he could do was grin and reach a hand up to stroke through Atlasâ hair. âYou are amazing. It was amazing. Iâm about to start an encore chant. Wanna go again?â He lifted an eyebrow, mischievousness on his face, but no pressure. If Atlas would rather swim and chat and put up with Jamie being a clingy drunk, heâd happily take that too.
Atlas sighed, absolutely one to relish in the spotlight when he got it, there was an ease to the performance and for singing for the wolf pack, it was different from when he sang with the kids. There it was all ABCs and I love Disney, which was great, but for all his lost or forgotten memories, lyrics still came to him, same with names when he tripped over someone from his past. There was a girl here, Alessia, she was from his old pack, had at least one niece he knew immediately, but the other was too young. She wasnât a Heart, but she was still part of his pack - in a disconnected degrees of separation kind of way, she was even family. And his protectiveness extended towards her as well. Part of him wished she was here, but it was fair game to watch Jamieâs enthusiastic reaction to his performance, like some pieces were finally starting to fall back into place.Â
âI think Iâve got one more in me,â the beta offered before he shifted from laying on his stomach to sitting on the edge of the dock, his feet dangled in the water up to his knees and Atlas cleared his throat, âand then someone else is singing.â Atlas said ominously as he looked out towards the Heart members, his eyes wide as he pretended to be looking for a victim, an easy smile on his face next.Â
His hands moved down again, mostly naked Atlas drummed on either side of his legs against the edge of the dock. A familiar pattern that was a bit faster tempo-wise than Alanis Morisette had been. He didnât have much of a singing voice, but the beta had a lot of commitment to entertaining, but also to making a fool of himself. It was kind of a full-time job when you worked with kids and that bled into his social life as well.
âThereâs a fire, starting in my heart...â
Atlas started the opening line and thrummed against the dock, his voice low and gritty as the others quickly joined in. It was another popular song, but it seemed fitting in the moment as the wolves howled along to âRolling in the deep,â and âwe couldâve had it all.â
He smiled when he finished, not in the least bit ashamed of the hack job heâd just done, the wolves cheering grew in a crescendo and Atlas slipped back into the water to swim closer to Jamie, âOkay, Iâm really, done now.â The beta offered, someone else had hopped up onto the dock to sing a drunken rendition of twinkle twinkle, to great and rowdy applause. Some absent piece of his heart felt - sad? - in a way, Atlas supposed that betrayal cut deep, however that looked, he was here now. For better, or for worse. âThanks,â Atlas offered, he reached forward and brushed his alphaâs cheek lightly, âfor getting me up there.âÂ
