Fact time:

At the beginning of their relationship, and despite it developing within a supportive, safe environment, Eren and Levi didn’t have the easiest transition from a platonic relationship, to a romantic one. And not just because of the differences that come with an interspecies relationship, which was already a complicated issue for them. Everyone had difficulty at first coming to terms with the fact that, indeed, it was happening, feelings were involved, and there was nothing anyone could do about it anymore. Especially since merfolk were, and still are, very unknown to the world, Levi being the very first of his kind at the Center. Everyone knew he was smart and sentient… We just didn’t know how much or to what extent he was similar to humans. We were still learning about him, and him about us. But it happened.

Eventually, a majority of staff members along with Mr. Smith and Dr. Hange came to accept the situation, and began to work with both of them about how things could be handled in a healthy, safe way. It wasn’t like a typical work-college-type of romantic drama… Levi wasn’t there to work, but to cooperate in the project, as well as to live under protection of the Center.

However, as with anything in the world… Not every single person was alright with it. Little by little, people began to show their true feelings regarding their relationship, and how they didn’t truly care about understanding merfolk and working to create a harmonious life between merfolk and humans. Eren and Levi would be looked down upon by some staff, talked behind their backs, mistreated in Levi’s case, insulted in Eren’s, threatened in both cases. And that behavior is not tolerated here.  Thus, a purge of staff began. One by one the disagreeable members were plucked from the Center.
