You don't actually have to kill your darlings. You can just put them in the oubliette #myoubliette
Grace finds a phone tucked in a random maintenance hatch a couple years into the Erid trip and starts laughing so hard he's crying because the pictures and videos folder is full of Vat shenanigans.

Grace looking at the camera confused while the core time circle around him like the one girl surrounded by five guys meme
Stratt reclined on a couch looking demure with a coffee mug and using Grace's legs as a lap board for her tablet. Grace is dead asleep, obviously snoring with his mouth wide open and covered in reports. His glasses are on Stratt's head.

Anatomie d'une Chute (2023) dir. Justine Triet
Big fan of that one phm review that was like “oh yeah she definitely killed her french husband”
really really strong choice in anatomy of a fall to cast as the prosecution a guy with a super punchable face and to cast as the defense swann arlaud
btw while we're on the topic of anatomy of a fall, i dont think the husband killed himself on purpose or as revenge, i think his fall was a complete accident. and it's interesting how the defense brought that up as a legitimate possibility but said it could never work in court bc it wasnt a narrative that could assign blame. people love assigning blame and having neat little explanations that identify a clear victim and villain when there isnt one. you see that in court, in the media, in the marriage itself (particularly from the husband).
and also i do feel like the husband had real reasons to feel upset, but he wasnt looking for solutions, he wanted someone to blame. i also think sandra was a bit cold but she correctly identified his unwillingness to admit his own faults or that he chose this life and is playing off his cowardice as sacrifices he made for her. i love that she refused to budge an inch when the husband tried to push it all on her. i cant say what the "correct" decision would have been here, i just think this was a super compelling choice on her part that i can empathize with and she was understandably at the end of her rope. she's not a sponge for his resentment, she refuses to be the scapegoated woman, before or after his death, or to simplify their complicated relationship. and that, to me, makes anatomy of a fall a more nuanced and engaging piece of art than what the popular discourse reduces it to
more work on this (👆) bad boy! call me an idiot because of the way I consistently choose to make pieces that require skills I do not have (honestly I'm having fun though so whatever ig)
bonus stuff/closeups under this (👇)
remember everything will be alright
Hey gang what is up dog
Been a while since I did a proper drawing like this — my art has changed a lot over the course of a few months so pieces like this are a lot harder for me to produce because I’m not quite used to the change yet
Please enjoy though! I had a lot of fun drawing this (although my legs hurt quite a bit…)
“Eridians dislike earth because they abandoned Grace.” *Incorrect Buzzer Sound* ya missed the point of the story buddy! It’s not about someone being ‘bad’ it’s about the incredible power of love and that love being worth dying for!
Gimmie Eridians who are absolutely heartbroken to hear that humans where so desperate and so scared that they where willing to part with not just one Grace, there were three of them! Gimmie Eridians touched to find that the humans planned a way for their sacrifices to be as comfortable as possible. Gimmie Eridians who send earth a message saying “We know it must have hurt to send your heroes to die, but one made it and he’s safe here. We lost 22 good Eridians on the journey we would have lost 23 if not for your Grace.”
Give me humans sitting on Earth slowly coming to the conclusion that when we look up not only are we not alone, someone out there is alive because of one of us. That no matter what we think of ourselves a whole species thinks highly of us because we helped save the galaxy. Give me humans who figure out how to send a probe to Erid filled to the brim with messages for Grace and footage of a monument being raised that reads his name, his crews names, and then “in memory of the 22 Eridians who lost their lives on the journey to save the stars.”
I think some of the Eridians send messages specifically for Stratt. I think Adrien does. “I know how hard it must have been to send Grace to die and sending him away scared. But he’s safe now. He may have been mad at you, but I’m not. I can’t be. Without your choice, I would have lost Rocky and we would have both lost our homes forever. Thank you Eva Stratt, sender of heroes.”
One aspect of PHM that I’d like to see us address more is the fact that the Grace-Stratt betrayal is mutual, at least from Stratt’s POV. It’s clear that she’s furious at Grace in the book:
See it from her perspective: Stratt was conscripted into Project Hail Mary just as much as Grace or any of the other scientists who work for her. She has complied without complaint, even though it means putting thousands of deaths on her conscience, even though she knows she’ll be villainized by history, even though she suspects she’ll be imprisoned for life if not executed after launch. She sacrifices herself because it is what must be done to have the best chance of saving humanity. And when she asks Grace to make a similar sacrifice, he refuses. He refuses even though, unlike her, he won’t have to sacrifice his conscience and, unlike her, he’ll be remembered as a hero.
Now obviously, Grace deserved to choose his own fate and what Stratt did was wrong. She knows that. But she also sees Grace as astoundingly selfish for choosing himself over the entirety of humanity (even if some of that choice was motivated by a lack of self confidence) and, on a personal level, for refusing to see things from her perspective and sacrifice himself to spare her one more death on her conscience. Grace is betrayed when the closest thing he has to a friend murders him. Stratt is betrayed when the closest thing she has to a friend forces her into the role of murderer.
We as a fandom often wonder if Grace ever forgives Stratt. But perhaps we should also be asking if she ever forgives him.
