Thinking about Eva Stratt sending her only friend in the Hail Mary, with the point of "If you stay, you will die soon with the rest of humanity. Living a long happy healthy life is not the alternative."

Like, she and the rest of humanity are on a sinking ship — and she's putting him on a lifeboat.

And yes, his little rowboat won't survive the stormy sea either, but it will survive long enough to find and direct the ship to safe harbour before all the passengers disappear beneath the waves.

By the time the ship sees the port Grace directed them to, they'll be hauling their half flooded hull past the driftwood evidence of Grace's sacrifice.

So . . . I was thinking about how "all the astronauts were there by choice" and yeah, Ryland very clearly wasn't sent up in space by choice. That was still very messed up.

But, if they stuck with this story, then Stratt technically would not be lying to say he joined the program by choice.

Yes, upon first meeting, Ryland was essentially drafted into working on Astrophage. Just like the rest of the project's scientists were. And he apparently kept this in mind.

However!

Ryland was also allowed to leave after finding out the composition of Astrophage.

He went back to his lab and straight up demanded (to Stratt's face!) to be let back on the project because he couldn't stand by and watch the world break apart. Not when his students would inherit that world.

I saw a discussion that said he was brave enough to continue working on Astrophage, despite knowing that it could melt metal within less than a fraction of a second.

It was powerful enough to evaporate metal!

That's crazy, and I feel like a lot of people would get far away from that stuff if given the choice.

Ryland went back to a lab full of this stuff of his own volition.

I don’t think he was against risking his life to help save those he cared about. It was about the finality of the Hail Mary mission. His back was against the wall and it terrified him.

I like the Ava and Eva ship. However, I find kinda of funny if Ava was just a decendant of Eva in a timeline in which The Project Hail Mary didn't work out ( they could have still sent Grace, but he died in the coma as Yáo and Olesya, or maybe they sent the other backup scientist, or maybe Dubois was survived the explosion, or worse they just weren't able to recreated the taumeba after the beetles arrived to Earth.) and has keep the familiar tradition of sacrificing guys for the sake of humanity.

Like I have this picture of Ava pushing with one hand the bottom to close the submarine Simon is and putting in the blood ocean -knowing that Simon (who has no idea of any of this whole "execution thing") is not going to surive-, and the other hand pressed against her chest and saying something like: "This is what grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grandman Eva would have wanted." while a single tears falls over her cheek.

everyone gets onto eva stratt for the "think about it long time" vs. "you have three hours" thing but

operating on book canon a little bit: if grace couldn't do it-- if he said no*-- the alternative was to scramble and fly in the next most qualified volunteer, who had 0 training, 0 knowledge of astrophage, and was not an astronaut. three hours could have been three hours of training for that replacement. three hours could have been three hours of preparation for grace, if he said yes

eva stratt gave grace three hours. not to decide, necessarily, because the decision was going to be made the way it was no matter what. but three hours to come to terms with it, to grieve, to mentally prepare himself. three hours that could have been spent giving humanity a better chance to survive

she borrowed three hours that she didn't have to give grace space to process. to get himself together and come to her, teary-eyed but resolved, and say yes.

and he still said no to her. she gave him everything and he said no. he forced her to force him. she gave him three hours she didn't have. i feel so sick about eva stratt

god you weren’t lying about the phm ao3 stats being wild. one of these characters isn’t even in the movieeee why does he have nearly 3/4ths as many fics as one of the three main characters 😭

IT'S SO BAD. & the fact that simon ironlung has more fics than yáo & ilyukhina do COMBINED is criminal. crossovers aren't inherently bad & i respect they will always be a part of fandom, but like... some of us care about the source material... and want to read about the Actual Characters And Themes In The Text... idk. for me, if i'm in a fandom, it's BECAUSE i liked the original text & wanted to play more in that space. & maybe this makes me pretentious and a hater, but i think the majority of a fandom should also... want to interact and play with the actual source material & its themes & characters... not just make crossovers... also. fun fact! stratt may have more fics total than simon ironlung, but if you filter the phm tag by relationship for bloodymary, do you know how many of those fics have stratt tagged as a character? 157 fics. out of 1500. & inb4 "oh, well even if these people don't care about stratt, maybe at least they care about the women in the cast of iron lung! after all, we can't expect all crossovers to take place in the universe of PHM"! well let me tell you. ava ironlung is tagged in 121 of those 1500 fics. lol
