idia with his hair tied up simply because i have a soft spot for it
do you ever think abt helmut being on the road for who knows how long, struggling to find gigs, probably poor but refusing to back down from eventually finding his audience.
his poster for the psychodessy having a sold out sign on it has always felt to me like manifestation & desperation on his part. bc his theater performance that's near a bustling theater district (if it's not THE Broadway itself) was totally empty.
how close was he to straight up giving up if ford hadn't found him.
and how surreal do you think it'd have been to arrive at the gulch and have even this small group of people just. excited to see him perform. they're such an enthusiastic audience.
then they're his friends.
then they're his family.
and they build a protective little garage roof over his van and his stage so he can live comfortably in the thing that holds so many memories and all his belongings
oh my god dude
Being critical of your interests is sooooo fun when you have the critic gene & then you sound kind of insane to the average tv watcher when you're like "this is my favorite show, It's Racist" & then you try to clarify what you mean & get that [Speech (legendary) - FAILURE] "the racism is really interesting though"
[Speech (legendary) - SUCCESS] I find the sociopolitical context of pulpy old sci-fi born circa the civil rights movement really fascinating to analyze especially when it was progressive for its time but still reveals the writers' unexamined biases in the subtext
"i never could say no to you" is one of my favourite phrases in the entire english language because it's so casually cruel. even when it's spoken fondly or lightheartedly there's this dismissive implication of blame to it, like twisting a knife. whatever happens next is on your hands. i want you to know that i betrayed and destroyed myself for you.
"Get a job"
❌️ ableist
❌️ encourages capitalism
❌️ people can be losers and be employed
❌️ makes being jobless sound like a moral failing
"Get a hobby"
✔️ keeps disabled people who can't work in mind
✔️ does not encourage capitalism
✔️ if they already have hobbies you can tell them to get a new one
✔️ encourages a better use of autonomy and freetime
Oh dear god I finally finished some fanart for the new episode!
It’s really scrappy but I just wanted it to exist. 😂 (I’ve been so busy freelancing lately, takes all my energy for fanart drawings).
god but I loved this episode! I am SO HAPPY seeing all the Caine angst, but I just had to draw him getting a hug.❤️🩹
More black princesses, more black fairies, more black mermaids, more black girls doing all the things, for fucks sake
"this is unbecoming of me" is genuinely a useful thing to have in your mental toolbox
sorry if I don't respond to message for the next 20 minutes I just ate a peach so ripe and juicy and soft and flavorful that I was in hog heaven and am now mourning the fact I inhaled it like a famished beast
nah y'all don't understand that peach was so ripe every bite was overflowing with sweet juice that I was slurping up like a man stranded in a desert finding an oasis so it wouldn't drip on me or my clothes. oh my god it was so potent with flavor I could not think anything other than about that peach, it was so firm in my hands but so soft as I bit into it too. I should have known how beautiful eating this peach was going to be when I was cutting it into fourths and the knife glided around the pit like it was nothing. oh my god it tasted so good like nectar from a goddess and I should probably stop carnally describing how good this peach was before someone asks what's wrong with me
this possessed me btw
OH MY FUCKING GOD?!?!?!!
No no as another person who's had a Perfect Peach half the size of my head in california on a hot day after 4 hours of scuba diving with 0 food in my body, I understand.
I understand.
anyone at GDQ: trans rights!
the entire crowd, every time: WOOOO!!!!! YEAH!!!!
many years ago, games done quick had a problem. there were trans people in the community, and there were a lot of transphobes in the community. for a while there, trans members of the community got treated like shit. not by everyone, of course, but by enough people that it was clearly a culture problem, and it was getting BAD. (and frankly, transphobia was far from the only issue.)
so games done quick had a decision to make: keep things how they were, or fundamentally change the community's culture and kick out anyone who refused to stop being an asshole.
they chose to switch things up, and things changed IMMENSELY. they leaned into being trans positive, implemented pronoun tags for runners and staff, and started banning people who sought to make trans people feel unwelcome in the community.
since then, there have been a ton more trans speedrunners. long-time speedrunners have since come out, and trans rights are constantly celebrated with even more casual-ness than the transphobic vitriol that used to be spewed at trans people.
games done quick even chose to move their events out of florida (and eat the cost of doing so) in part because of transphobic laws that could endanger trans members of the community.
GDQ has come such a long way, and has fundamentally transformed itself into a much more kind and welcoming community. for everyone.
it's silly, and anecdotal, but i love you watch gdq because of this because it means that i get to see a trans woman running super mario world hacks that are unreasonably tricky, and the entire room explodes in cheers and chanting her name because they're so fucking impressed.
so many fields are banning us outright from competing, or letting their culture get so toxic to us we simply don't want to.
even as queer friendly as the pokemon vgc scene is towards the top (arguably the most famous pokemon world champion, wolfe glick, has been vocal in supporting us), the official events rarely, if ever, showcase any trans women on the main stage as competitors (though to their credit, they've recently had freya pierce as the first trans woman caster for the tcg, so fingers crossed).
but trans women at gdq aren't just allowed to play or on the main stage. we're outright CHEERED ON BY NAME. actively included in woman-only events (frame fatales; all women and fems speed running events... which, yes, explicitly includes trans women. better than some queer spaces do, really). people talk about being excited to see us perform.
that's not even a pipe dream. things like that HAPPEN. a couch full of trans women for a trans woman's run and everyone is losing their minds just as if it were any cis person doing it. and the audience is packed and CHEERING. while cis announcers flawlessly and tirelessly call and response "TRANS RIGHTS!" all day and night, and that phrase makes it into name suggestions, and runners of all stripes just smile and nod at the sentiment, if not directly join in the response themselves, because they're happy to hear that love for us.
there's no question of "does she have an advantage? is it fair?" not even once. just "oh man i can't wait for shondas mario run. i hear she's got amethyst and shoujo on the couch, and maddie thorson is gonna call in for it!"
idk it feels like a glimpse into what a community SHOULD be. openly trans positive, full of love and appreciation for trans women, and unflinchingly full of support.
fuck It, let this be my first tumblr post..
