The Mexican Punitive Expedition began 100 years ago following a raid on the border town of Columbus, New Mexico, by Mexican revolutionary leader Francisco “Pancho” Villa and over 400 of his followers (“Villistas”) on March 9, 1916.  Following the raid, an expeditionary force of more than fourteen thousand regular army troops under the command of Brig. Gen. John J. “Black Jack” Pershing operated in northern Mexico from March 16, 1916, to February 14,1917 “in pursuit of Villa with the single objective of capturing him and putting a stop to his forays.”

C. Donovan Smith of ICRT and Taiwan News in English mentioned a Changhua labor party candidate who dresses up as Captain America.  Here’s the DPP candidate for Pingzhen in an ad, also dressed as Captain America.  Wonder if this is a thing this elections, or it’s just these two.

Distractions

Trying really hard to focus and finish work on another piece.  There’s some elections excitement going on outside though which keeps distracting me!  (Well, I’m sure the locals are a lot more blase about it than I am.)

Drumbeats coming from a nearby street is filling the background, and there are occasional firecrackers and music, coming from the KMT candidate’s local office down the road.  My uncle said that the candidates’ supporters should be parading on roads nearby now, and also in the evening.

Spent the day at home

I spent the day at the old home where my dad grew up. Every time I see something new, that I never got to see before. This year, pulling daikon out of the ground, and picking fresh tong hao (which went right into the savory tang yuan being cooked for lunch).

Later at night I had a deep conversation with an aunt about our views on Taiwan’s future. She and pretty much all of the family are pan-blue. It was interesting to hear her thoughts.

Also fun was secretly sharing a whispered toast with my other aunt at lunch. She’s a solo pan-green among the adults in the family =)

This guy is plains indigenous by ethnicity but he is running for the regular Pingzhen seat in the LY  and is running for one of the indigenous seats on the LY.

Despite all the ads, my aunt says she still hasn’t decided on who she will vote for.

On the bus ride to the market we passed ads for the DPP and MKT challengers. My aunt said there’s a LOT less roadside flags/banners this elections as the public conscious has shifted to recognize the plastic waste involved.
