復帰への道筋が見え、内田の表情は明るかった。渡欧前の取材に「手術する前は膝にいろんなものが詰まっていた感じだったけど、今は力も入れやすい。個人的にはすっきりしている」と笑顔。「復帰してからが大事。シャルケで結果を出して、また代表に呼んでもらえれば、チームに貢献したい」と力を込めた。

　手術の決断にあたってはシャルケや日本のドクターに加え、ミュンヘンの医師にも相談。日本代表のハリルホジッチ監督からパリの医師を紹介するとの申し出もあった。ミュンヘンの病院では陸上短距離のウサイン・ボルトと顔を合わせたという。関係者によると、膝蓋じん帯の手術を受けるサッカー選手は少なく、元ブラジル代表ＦＷロナウドは同じん帯断裂で晩年は全盛期の力を取り戻すことはできなかった。内田はシャルケからは保存治療を勧められる中、６月上旬に手術を受け、全治は４〜６カ月。ドイツ紙では年内復帰は絶望と報じられていたが、早ければ１０月にピッチに立つ可能性もある。

　順調なら１１月のＷ杯アジア２次予選で、約８カ月ぶりの国際Ａマッチ出場も視野に入ってくる。６月のハリルホジッチ監督との面談では「焦らずしっかり治してほしい」と伝えられているが、内田不在の右サイドバックは日本の“穴”となっているだけに、早期復帰が実現すればチームにとって大きな力になる。内田は「サッカー選手なら普通１度や２度は手術をしているので、やっと一人前になった感じ。転んでもただで起き上がる性格ではないので」と笑った。５月には一般女性との結婚を発表。家族の前で再び日の丸に袖を通すイメージはできている。
