Forgot to post yesterday oops! The exam went SO WELL. But despite not sleeping the night before I just couldn't nap in the day after ;_; so I went through revision for what is now tomorrow's exam...! With some noice matcha orange latte and Andrewarcade
Today was suuuper productive! I read through supervision notes and (accidentally lol) read an entire book 😱😱 which was way more useful than I expected it to be. I feel very prepared for my exam tomorrow morning ☺️☺️
Hello! I am a student from Spain and I really want to study philosophy at Cambridge but I am super scared of not being good and smart enough. Any tips for the application? Or just in general? How difficult/intense is studying at Cambridge?

Re intensity. Generally you’re expected to do an essay a week during term time, not just writing, but also the reading for it. The essay would be about 2000-3000 words. BUT these are nothing to stress about. Ultimately, these are what you’ll use to revise come exams, and so you should approach them how you want. Supervisions are a bit intense in that, it’s you one-on-one with an academic. bUT they’re SUPER FUN (in my experience), and, especially in the philosophy faculty, they’re very well trained and very understanding, so there’s no need to feel stressed or intimidated by them! Be communicative and respectful and put some effort in for them and you’ll be golden. But this is just intensity about work load.
I know people who’ve found the focus on analytic philosophy very intense. Essentially, the Cambridge philosophy faculty breathes analytic philosophy. I love it, but I had a coursemate who switched to English because they did not :’( if you’re unsure how you’d find it, check out the FAQ on the philosophy faculty website…! They have an introductory reading list, which should give you an overview of the philosophy they’re into.

Oh, you also mention tips for applying...in which case - check out the FAQ and reading list even more...!! If you like what you see there, talk about it in your application! If you don't like what you see, this probably isn't the course for you; don't apply for a degree you'll be miserable in for three years just BC 'cambridge' 😭😭 and also don't worry about being 'smart enough' if you have the grades and a genuine love for philosophy, you stand a strong chance :) I'm not sure how the Spanish system works, so if you don't know what sort of grades you'd need to achieve, email an admissions department at a college! They're super helpful with queries like that :D and if you get in, don't ever doubt that you're 'clever enough' (also don't doubt it anyway, it might just be supervision style teaching isn't quite right for you or smth), the old chair of faculty said in a meeting once; 'if you get into Cambridge to do Philosophy, you're probably gonna get a 2.i'. and really, what more could you want? 😂☺️

Today I finished ‘learning’ that new topic, and looking through past papers it seems it was a very wise decision of mine to do that 😜😜
And I also went through and highlighted theorems, definitions and proofs that I should rewrite when I go to revise for the next exam

I just love the way light falls on the paper when you press that little bit hard into the page. Feels good man. My sleep cycle is completely the opposite of what it needs to be for exams. But hey ho that's fasting for ya. This v narrow handwriting is my 'cramming' handwriting... heheh...mostly for topics I don't fully know/aren't doing in the exam but think it might be useful to know anyway~~
The exam went well! And to reward myself...I didn't do any revision. Heh. But I did find out lots of information about where I'm going to be living next year, so it was still productive! And I did a bit of colouring
Was gonna make lots of pretty mind maps today, but going through the notes I felt I didn't really need to. My first exam is tomorrow morning and I actually feel really well prepared. I'm going to try and wake up two hours early to get some extra cramming in (that's just what helps me remember) but I'm not gonna stress ☺️☺️
Today wasn't the best. I didn't wake up for breakfast, but was still fasting and still had rowing in the morning. The supervision went well, and the top picture is of the notes I took. I went through lecture notes for philosophical logic (middle picture) and started mapping out a mind map for the topic. Unfortunately (or rather, excitingly) I found out where I'll be living in Japan next year, so a good portion of my time went on looking up the area. It was that or sleeping to counteract the hunger... Still. Started on some work, and have one day of revision left until my first exam 💪💪
So today. I completed a mock for my final ever (revision) supervision, handed it in during lovely sunny weather, and also copied up a lecture hand out I'm mysteriously missing.... This was all for my mathematical logic module. I also had rowing this morning. And am currently fasting...so, while it doesn't look like much, it felt like a lot of work 😥😥💪💪💪
My final set of edits for my dissertation, and the hand-in of my dissertation! This was around two weeks ago now...and in under two weeks I'm finished with exams forever! Revision is going well. But to force myself to do that little bit more, I shall be posting every day until my exams are over 💪💪

This is one of my favorite things about philosophical writing - they abstain from so much of the academic bullshit tradition like the no-I rule. If you thought it up and you’re writing it down, you’d better be okay explaining it in a personal and easy-to-grasp way, or else it’s useless. (Also everything is either a pun or a jab at another philosopher, so that’s great too.) I wish more writing focused on content and not convention.
