Voyager – Threshold Day! Let's explore some deep feelings about inadequacy and technological breakthroughs... and uh, the fabric of reality itself, maybe.

This episode has so much going on, I don't even know what to say. I think much of it is great, what I really dislike isn't so much the open questions it leaves us with – it's the deep misunderstanding of evolution.

Anyway, I'm experimenting with lyric subtitles, because I realised that it's actually really hard to listen to the lyrics, but when I add an additional track for the lyrics there's so much text on the screen that it becomes difficult to watch the video (I keep switching back and forth between reading the top and bottom text, and I already know what it says!). I figured uploading it to youtube might allow me to add two different subtitle tracks but I am a total newbie at this and can't figure out how to specify that the second subtitle is just lyrics and not a different language. The 2-track vid can be found in a separate post.

🤭 I was curious about how you make your gifs (especially the super cool lower decks sets, with the gradients, the trading cards and the padd/lcars elements) and found the post where you explained how you do all this frame by frame in photoshop. Do you make templates for the lcars thingies in photoshop as well? How long does this usually take you? Do you use any other software for your gifmaking?

I would love to be able to make stuff like that because I really enjoy them. Unfortunately I can't even colour pick a nice palette, much less create borders and stuff. I looks like it would be easy but I find it very difficult for some reason! (the reason is that I don't know what I'm doing)

hi omg sorry i took so long to reply to this but I thought for a long time what to say that might be helpful :')

I make all my gifs in photoshop (newest version) and I think using software (rather than online gif tools) is unavoidable if you want to make elaborate creative sets. that being said, photopea is basically photoshop for free and online so no harm at all in trying that out I guess? (i have never used it tho so I can't speak to how well it actually works etc.) anyway, yes, i do make the templates and I do use photoshop for that as well (I've never used any other adobe products like indesign or whatever)

I use mpv player to take screencaps from video files and then those are what i load into photoshop to edit. but that's all for software.

I can't really say how long things usually take me because it definitely varies but....a long time fnskfn the number one thing is you need to be patient 😭 and honestly the best advice i can give (after 3 1/2 ish years of experience) is like with any creative endeavour; just try things! play around with the tools and you will discover what you like and learn over time. i would also highly recommend @usergif as a resource!! they have tons of helpful tutorials for anything you ever wanted to know and it's a great place to see what other people are making as well :)

Thanks so much for the usergif link, that's an amazing resource! I'm going to have so much fun looking through it. People are so creative!

I use Davinci Resolve for video editing and preliminary giffing (as in: I do the cutting/editing and colour grading in resolve and export the clip as PNG frames), and then gifski to make a gif out of them. While it's definitely possible to do a lot of creative editing and the masking tools are quite good, I would prefer a larger workspace like regular digital painting and photo editing programs for that sort of work (I also find the interface needlessly unintuitive). The programs I've tried so far that aren't photoshop didn't let me work with all frames in one file and got very slow, so that was way too much work for what I managed to produce. But what I'm getting from your explanation is that it will be a ton of work either way. 😅

We'll see how my insanity progresses, I might be trying to follow in your footsteps soon enough!
