death to the medical military-industrial complex now and forever
they want to fuck each other so bad it makes them enact increasingly complex crimes against each other in order to prove that they’re actually the one with the power that they’re one DOING the fucking & not the one getting fucked over
ancient roman women whose husband keeps looking at the neighbour's boy quintus and he never looks at her that way and she can't even chainsmoke in the kitchen because they don't have marlboro blues in ancient times. and she can't even go to the club because they haven't discovered drum and bass music yet. her friend clodia's having visions of a woman named doechii but neither of them knows what that means
stand by what i always say about the problems in medicine aren't due to individual bad actors & the best person in the world going to med school could not expunge the profession of ethical commitments core to its function in capitalist society but like it's also true the transmisogynist to health professional pipeline is more than just the baseline level you would expect in a transmisogynist society. same with eugenics likers it's quite obvious what draws at least some of these ppl to medicine is precisely their ideological commitments, it's an environment where theyre not just tolerated but explicitly there to enact violence & be told theyre morally right for it. fork attracted to magnet
Too many people rightly recognising that modern racism was shaped by the social and economic forces of early capitalism from the 1600s onwards. Not enough people asking whether hundreds of years of crusades had any effect on racial thinking and ideology in western Europe and whether that had continuity in the age of colonialism. Even less people asking how the Romans rationalised their imperial politics and whether that had any racially tinged thinking (it did) and whether there might have been some continuity between that and western European anxieties concerning the "East" and other modern racism(s).
we need to instill a new storytelling rule of thumb into people called "show don't tweet" where we encourage them to put all pertinent canon information into the actual story and its official supplemental material instead of using reddit AMAs as lore dlcs
I'd say we need to instill a new storyreading rule of thumb into people called "understand that creators have thoughts about their stories that don't make it into the final work because it's a detail irrelevant to the story" but you all already bastardised Chekhov's Gun so fuck it I guess
everything this man says about the damn odyssey movie makes my eye twitch
sorry to my wasian siblings and not to get into race discourse during the month of may but you guys gotta get into political organization or something instead of holding aesthetic proximity to whiteness rallies my GOD
anyways
America's latest obsession with Wasians is more dangerous than you think.

The Apothecary Diaries is such a breath of fresh air because this is a story that genuinely seems to love women. From the sex workers of the Verdigris House to the seemingly antagonistic women of the palace (like Suirei and Loulan), the Apothecary Diaries declares that every single one of them deserves grace and dignity even if (or especially if) they come into conflict with its protagonist or societal respectability
Yes this but also it avoids the "Not like other girls" tropes because it makes it apparent over time that Mao Mao is not special her circumstances are.
Mao Mao is not inherently more intelligent than other women her situation just allowed her the kind of freedom and education that others were not offered. Throughout the series Mao Mao is shown to be wrong, that her point of view causes her to make incorrect judgements and she is often taught things by other women things she had not considered or known about that help to piece things together.
Time and time again we are shown women who could be like Mao Mao if they were allowed to be. The best example being Loulan not only was just a weird as Mao Mao she walked circles around her in intelligence and strategy. Because Loulan knew how this world worked she used it to pull the wool over everyone's eyes including Mao Mao's, who at the end still couldn't fully understand her. The series over and over shows that these women are all living with deep complexities, inteligence and passions but they are not able to embrace them because of circumstance.
This post is about women. Let’s stay on topic.
I put it in tags and was praising the show. I mentioned something I was genuinely glad about seeing with women at the beginning, because as a woman I have seen a trend in dehumanizing women through supremacist ideology. The idea of women as the fairer sex, that women are inherently kind and moral and incapable of cruelty or abuse, strips away an element of human complexity and potential. The show doesn’t demonize women while including capacity for harmful behavior and allows a broad spectrum of human expression and behavior, which is awesome. Lack of sanitization is awesome. I didn’t parrot things that had been said earlier in the post because they had been said already. If I was going to include my own thoughts at all, I wanted to touch on something different.
Mentioning how men are characterized was because a lot of western media in particular tends to attempt shortcuts and cheats to make women look better by making men look worse. That doesn’t make women look better, it just lowers the bar collectively. I’m glad that The Apothecary Diaries is a show that does the work for its whole cast and allows all characters to shine, because it is secure in women being interesting and equally varied, capable, and complex. I used Guen as an example because he isn’t as central comparatively. Showing that the narrative treats him with dignity and nuance speaks to how good it is to all of its characters irrespective of gender.
I’m sorry that you consider the equal humanity of women within a narrative as off-topic to the representation of women in media.
We can praise fictional women and the real woman who writes them without including entire paragraphs that only talk about a man. You can make your own post for that.
It wasn’t paragraphs in the original post. I had ten tags total acting as sentences. Five of those mentioned Guen as an example of also showing dignity to minor characters who are not women to demonstrate effective characterization across the whole cast, showing that the series doesn’t succumb to a common pitfall in representation. The other five tags placed those in the context of women as part of human experience and equally default. Being tags was so no one was obligated to include my thoughts in reblogs.
Don’t worry though, I don’t see value in engaging further with someone who believes in limiting the thoughts and conversations of real women fans. :)
Implying that a South Asian woman is not a “real woman” just because I don’t want my post about women to be derailed by discussions about men is not a good look.
