Two satellite proposals currently before the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) could have significant consequences for the nighttime environment. The first, from Reflect Orbital, proposes an orbital illumination system using mirrors mounted on satellites to direct sunlight back to Earth. The second, from SpaceX, proposes space-based AI data centers made up of a constellation of satellites, seeking authorization for up to one million satellites in low Earth orbit—an unprecedented expansion of satellite infrastructure.
DarkSky International has moved quickly to activate our community, and we thank everyone who has already taken action by signing our open letters (Reflect Orbital | SpaceX) or submitting comments to the FCC. If you have not yet participated, there is still time.
The FCC comment period for the SpaceX proposal closes March 6, and the Reflect Orbital proposal closes March 9. While the FCC is a U.S. government agency, comments and signatures are welcome from people around the world. Please use the links below to learn how you can take action and make your voice heard.

A beautiful winter phenomenon, hoarfrost forms during clear, calm nights, turning America’s public lands into stunning winter landscapes.
Needle-like in appearance, these fragile ice formations develop when water vapor transitions directly from a gas to a solid through a process called deposition. Early morning is the best time to spot hoarfrost, before sunlight melts the delicate crystals. ❄️
