Iâm really glad this anti-Confederate backlash has picked up steam, because weâve allowed Confederate apologists to completely seize control of Civil War history. The fact that we even think of it in terms of âNorth vs. Southâ or âUnion vs. Confederacyâ is a sign of that influence. It should be âAmericaâs Slaveowner Revolt.â We ask questions like âwhat if the South won the warâ, as if that was remotely possible given their numbers and logistical failures. The Confederacy was barely a government. Within a year of forming there were riots from food shortages. The whole notion that this was between two equally formidable and legitimate sides is a fallacy of the so-called Lost Cause.
This isnât griping from a history buff by the way, the Lost Cause has been one of Americaâs chief guardians of white supremacy for 150 years. The Big Lie about states rights affects politics to this day, and always in the context of letting states curtail civil rights that the federal government has guaranteed. Prior to the Civil War, when Northern states tried to push back against fugitive slave laws and make themselves sanctuaries for runaway slaves, the government cracked down hard on them. There was not a peep about states rights on that. We see it happening today. The states rights scolds have not said a word about Jeff Sessions threatening to destroy cities that refuse to hunt undocumented immigrants. Yet somehow the rights of states become sacrosanct when they want to keep gay couples from adopting kids. All of this is relevant to our current situation, and hopefully taking down some statues of (frankly overrated) treasonous generals is just the beginning.

One time, I had a dream that I was making peanut butter chocolate chip cookies, and most of them were the regular measurements in cups and stuff. But at the end of the recipe, instead of saying â2.5 cups of chocolate chipsâ it said â627 chocolate chips.â
So when I woke up, I made some peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. And instead of measuring out chocolate chips, I counted them (and suffered a lot of odd looks from my family for it).
Well, it turns out that 627 chocolate chips is the amount that the recipe called for (2.5 cups). Not only that, but 627 was the exact amount of chocolate chips that we had left in the house.

For anyone wondering, this is amazing enrichment for the animal and a great way to involve guests! The lions arenât forced to play with the rope if they donât want to, and these guys (and anyone else who tries this out) have an awesome close up and hands on experience, all without having to come in direct contact with the cat!
@why-animals-do-the-thing
This definitely counts as #actually cute. This video is from the San Antonio Zoo, and the lionessâ name is Axelle. As @ordinaryredtail said above, the tug of war interaction is entirely voluntary on her part.
My guess is that the zoo staff did use some positive reinforcement training to teach her how to pick up and pull on the rope at first, because thatâs not necessary something a lion would just do on their own. While itâs also probable that sheâs rewarded with something tasty did choosing to engage with the members of the public like this, Axelle wouldnât be engaging if it was a negative experience for her (there arenât enough snacks in the world to coerce a lion into doing something they find actively distressing). If she didnât want to participate, she could just walk away.
Some sanctuary and animal rights groups have taken issue with this interaction because they consider it unethical to ask a lion to engage in any âunnatural behaviorâ âfor the benefit of the public,â calling it exploitation. It is worth keeping in mind, however, that learning and engaging in novel behaviors is hugely enriching for animals in human care, and that lions have no concept of exploitation. As long as the lion is not bothered by the presence or noise of the crowd, is not injured or harmed, and is engaging on an entirely voluntary basis, this sort of thing is entirely ethical. It is far safer than any type of interaction where a member of the public is coming into direct context with a big cat, but still allows people to directly experience the sheer strength of a lion up close.
