He felt stupid for asking a kid. Really, he did. But when he saw her dart past him he held up his hand, as if to flag her down.
“You don’t happen to know where the armoury is in this place, do you?”
“I don’t know whether I want to do this. I don’t know whether I CAN do this.”

Doubt was a persons worst enemy, self doubt was often crippling to a point where it prevented action. That much was certain.
“If you’re thinking of giving up now, when you’ve come so far, it’d be a waste. All of this would have been for nothing. Do you really want your life to end knowing that?” He knew that he didn’t – his life had ended, he had DIED for nothing, and he didn’t want anyone else to face the same fate.

because sometimes what’s left to the imagination is much more terrifying.
“Are you feeling alright? You don’t look it.” “I just heard something… Something bad…” “Why didn’t you tell me about this?!” “What’s all this blood?!” “Will you tell me what the fuck is going on?” “Don’t give me that look! It wasn’t my fault!” “You should probably sit down for this.” “Please tell me you forgive me!” “I can’t live without you!” “Oh god, It was a mistake coming here… I’m sure of it.” “What the hell happened to you?!” “Where have you been?! I’ve been waiting for hours!” “You promised you wouldn’t do this anymore!” “I knew not to trust you!” “What’s that in your bag…? Is that–? Tell me it’s not!” “Is this what a dislocated shoulder feels like?!” “How could you do this to me?!” “Wake up! Wake up!!! You’re having a nightmare!” “I feel weird… what was in that drink…?” “I don’t want to leave you, but you’re not really giving me another option.” “Please… you’re scaring me…” “Ssh, I heard something again. How aren’t you hearing it? It was loud… and getting closer.” “Are you okay in there? You’ve been so quiet.” “I came as soon as I could! Did he/she get to you already?” “I don’t know whether I want to do this. I don’t know whether I CAN do this.” “Do you remember anything?” “You have to tell me who did this to you!” “No, no, I’m not alright. I’m definitely not alright.” “What’s your fucking problem?!” “Are you crying?” “You’re freaking me out! Please calm down!” “I’m leaving. And I’m not intending to come back.” “You… are dying?” “Did you drink the whole bottle while tripping? Seriously?” “Do you have a deathwish or something? Jesus!” “Ever been held at gunpoint? Want to know what it feels like?” “Stop screaming! Shh, calm down! You have to keep quiet!” “When’s the last time you slept?”.

Garrus could tell that his words had a bigger impact on Adam that he initially anticipated; he wasn’t going to pry and invade his privacy, some things were better left untold, and something just told him that the newly met man carried countless buggage with him. Not that he wasn’t used to that, he respected his silence.
“It was. But you learn to live with it. With the hellish missions that I agreed to take, I lost people, but also saved countless others. Still, I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m proud of what I accomplished, the life I lead was so much better that the ones my kind would have picked for me”, Garrus continued as he observed Adam, picking one of the boxes with rice and bringing it up to meet his eyes. “So you drench everything in sauce?”
“Allowing others to dictate your life isn’t living, it’s following.” Adam spoke from experience, and with empathy directed at his alien companion. He too had strayed from the path he was meant to walk, but he was resentful for his choices - he wasn’t as glad and as proud as Garrus was, unfortunately.
Instead he left the topic there and went to the food, observing how curious the alien was. “Mostly, yeah. But most of it’s fried anyway, you can drench it in sauce but you don’t have to. People have preferences...” He picked up a dumpling and showed the other. It was round, puffy, boiled so it was soft - it looked tiny in Jensen’s black metallic hand. “You can have sauce with these, but it’s optional.”
demoninabottle:
Tony considered what Adam told him for a moment; sure, he hated to think that there was a breach at his security, and he would hate it even more if he had to ask for someone else’s advise.
“You said that you worked at security before, right? Fine, I’ll hear what your suggestions on upping the security of this place.”
Adam simply returned to the chair he was sat in before, just by the work bench with his arm resting on the steel desk, fingers tapping in a soft rhythm one after the other.
“I’m not a software programmer. That’s your job. I’m just saying its easy to hack, so maybe get your head out of your ass and swallow your pride enough to admit you aren’t the most sophisticated tech genius here.”
demoninabottle:
Tony clearly got the bait, leaning closer and reading over Adam’s shoulder, eyebrows furrowed in deep concentration. He hated to be proven wrong, all his friends knew that, and he wasn’t going to let the first guy that walked inside his lab with his cool augmentations better him in anything, let alone his own systems.
“I personally programmed and bug tested everything in this Mansion. Are you saying that there’s a problem with what exactly?”
“I’m saying that it’s easily hacked... You should bulk up security.” He repeated, turning over to Tony and shrugging nonchalantly.
“Your programming isn’t great. If I can hack it, there are probably others that can too.”
thelatecaptain:
“I never claimed to be full of them.”
“You strike me as the type that seems proud of them, regardless.”
theturianbadboy:
“So we have that in common then”, he nodded, acknowledging his equal when he was facing one. He didn’t know much about Adam, if anything at all, but he was sure that he came from a world that had seen Hell for sure. He didn’t want to ask too many questions, and of course, it would hard to explain how the Reapers came to be and what they did to his home and so many other planets, but he felt a connection there. He understood him, and it could have been due to the nature the past occupation’s of them both. Garrus certainly didn’t want to dwell on that, even though it was so interesting to him to find out more about that world that Adam came from.
There it was. Of course Adam was interested, he was sure that, by that point, he had lost so many people in his life, in most likely the most painful ways.
“I don’t know”, he replied, disappointed that he didn’t have a proper explanation. “All I know is that… people that I thought that were gone forever, that I saw being left for dead with my own eyes, are back here. And that alternative realities are a thing. You could meet someone from your world, but not being exactly who they are.”
He waved at the woman behind the counter, following Adam outside and looking forward to trying the new, exotic food.
Adam fell deep into thought. His mind circled the prospect of those he loved and cared for being alive, along with those he hated and feared. It was something that shook his core, but also filled it with hope. Hope was a surreal and distant notion, one he hadn’t embraced for years. It felt foreign.
He stepped out, taking the food with him to a nearby bench before planting himself down and leaving space for his new companion. “So you met a lot of people, huh? Must’ve been rough.” He said, sorting through the plastic bag to pull out the containers, his augmented fingers doing a great job of opening the boxes gently.
“People who spend their time creating tragedy, I’m sure.”
“Yeah, no shit. Seems you’ve run out of quips real fast there.”
“Comparing tragedy is the pettiest thing I’ve ever heard of.”
“Who the fuck would actually get enjoyment out of that?”
“You tell me.”
“A lot more than that get people killed where I’m from.”
“Is this some sort of tragedy contest now to see who had it rougher? I didn’t realise.”
“Why do you care?”
“I don’t. But illegal augs and upgrades got people killed where I was from.”
“It was Russian made.”
“Several replacements and upgrades later…it’s far from that piece of shit Soviet tech.”
“I take it these upgrades were off the record. Just a guess.”
