'a feat of immortality.' (2026)

005 micron pen, 14x17

After 250+ hours, I have finally finished this bog body piece. Had a lot of fun bringing this guy to life and I am quite pleased by how it turned out.

It is an accompaniment to an essay on bog bodies, grief, and memory.

The saying 'those who we have lost are never truly gone as long as we remember them' is a saying I came to despise; it has been said to me countless times by well meaning people attempting to bring some sort of comfort to a situation where there is no chance for comfort. But the thought of that second death, the death that comes when they are fully forgotten, added to the grief. Grief that the universe one day would forget that I loved them and they loved me. That second death, when the vigilkeepers have also passed on, was a terrifying thought.

In the months after Davy’s death, I spent many hours awake at night, unable to sleep, reading through random JSTOR articles to pass the long hours. One article contained photographs of a variety of bodies found in Scandinavian bogs. I was transfixed by their hair; the perfect braided plait or the matted curls. Human elements on a figure so alien. There arose the question: who braided their hair? And how about those curls, did their lover play with them in the same way mine have been played with? Around this shriveled husk, more people come to life, those who loved them and those they loved. Lives different from mine but in some ways the same. In the important ways at least.

I find comfort in the thought that perhaps, centuries from now, we too will be carefully and lovingly uncovered; preserved by chance and uncovered by accident. This future stranger will notice our mended clothing or braided hair, and imagine our life and community. And for a moment, we all too will live once more.

Bit more progress on these knights

Last bit of drawing for a little while. With top surgery coming up (eek, tomorrow!!!), I will not be able to do much drawing. Instead, Ill be doing plenty of reading, writing, and playing video games.
