Ok, prepare to be surprised. August is base off of ... *drumroll* ... Hughie Campbell of The Boys who is masterfully portrayed by Jack Quaid. He is a normie who gets thrown into something crazy just by chance, and chooses to stand and fight for what he believes vs running and hiding. I do try to play him a little bit more on the doofus who likes to challenge the theory of gravity on the regular.

Again, another OC was calling my name. The possibility of an American being in London during the marauders era was wildly interesting. It also gave me a chance to create different HC as apposed to what is offered when playing a Hogwarts grad. It was interesting finding out what little information is canonically available about Ilvermony.

August had spent the morning thinking about what he was going to eat once he got off work. He spent enough time at The Leaky Cauldron to now have a favorite dish. The house soup was devine, although he was terrified to ask what the soup consisted of exactly. He drummed it up to the warmth he felt from the soup, warming him up after walking through the rain, and reminded him of a homemade soup that his grandmother had made him during the winter when he was a kid.

Walking into the pub he realized they were actually quite busy. August glanced back at this watch, verifying that it was about two in the afternoon, and figured something was going on, but he was gonna get his soup. He eyed a table in the back being vacated, and made a beeline for the empty seat. He reached the table at the exact moment as someone else.

He glanced at the slender hand grasping the chair across from him, and followed the arm to a witch. Her large eyes met his, and he glanced around, assuming she was alone as no one was standing beside her, before saying “listen, I am really hungry. I am willing to share the table if you are?”

Even after a few weeks, August was still trying to get a baring of the areas around him. He felt very comfortable in Hogsmede, and fairly well versed in Diagon, so he now spent most of his free time walking the streets of London.

This afternoon he found a small lane of retail shops, and had been dipping in and out seeing if anything caught his eye to send back home to his mom. This led him to a fairy fancy part of town, and he really had no idea where he was. Shrugging his shoulders, he settled on window shopping, just walking when he spotted her.

Georgiana was about a block ahead of him, with a collection of bags hanging from her elbow, as she studied something in the window front. August felt the relief of spotting someone he considered a friend, and quickened his pace before realizing how odd he looked. He came to a “normal” gate when he came within a few feet of her, before calling out “Georgiana!” allowing his goofy smile to appear across his face.

Amos couldn’t help but laugh, he wasn’t really able to see Amelia as frightening, but then again he had also known her for years. “Do yourself a favour, and never point out the shortness.” Amos said, the smile on his face only growing as he spoke. Actually, when they had been together, Amelia’s height had sort of worked out well for Amos, given that he wasn’t exactly a tall guy. Lowering into the vacant sea across from August, he wondered how much he had spoken to Amelia, she could be pretty hard to get to know at times, that much he knew. “Did she tell you that she once had the misfortune of being my girlfriend?” He’d be lying if he said that the use of girlfriend in the past tense didn’t bother him at all, but it was something he just had to learn to deal with.

“She’s just good at her job, it can be hard to separate it from other avenues in your life I guess.”

“Dont mention the altitude challenge, noted.” August said, before taking another fry from the basket. August was caught by surprise learning that Amos and Amelia shared a history, and did a poor job of hiding that surprise. Thankfully he didnt have any food or drink in his mouth to spit out. “I’m sorry.... I just need a moment to see if I can even mentally picture how your personality would mesh with hers.” August sat back in his chair, darting his eyes back and fourth as if he was analyzing it. “Nah, cant see it.” He chuckled. Taking a swig of his ale, he set it back down and said “I’m sure she’s lovely when not investigating a terrorist attack.”

He allowed his eyes to dart around the room, not quite sure what he was looking for, before he scooted his chair up to the tabletop and leaned across it. “Ok, what or who do I have to talk to to get on the right side of this fight?” He asked in a hushed tone.

“Honestly don’t worry about it,” Marlene chuckled, waving off the apology. “Snacks are a very valid distraction. I just wasn’t paying attention.”

Unlike most people she encountered in Hogsmeade, the man in front of her wasn’t someone she recognised. With the combination of that and his accent, it felt reasonably safe to conclude that he wasn’t a Hogwarts alum. He seemed nice enough though, at least from her first impression of him; the hunger for sweets gave him a lot of points.

“I’m Marlene,” she smiled by way of introduction. “I went to school near here so I’m going to blame nostalgia for the lack of watching where I’m going.”

“Hi Marlene, August Spencer, nice to meet you.” August said, trying very hard to not focus on the woman before him. She was... stunning. And her voice was like music to his ears. They weren't lying when they said American’s find accents attractive. August averted his eyes towards the castle in the distance, trying to focus on something other then the beautiful witch before him. “Hogwarts huh? I’m more of an Ilvermony man myself.” he retorted, pointing to the Ilvermony patch his mother made for him and sewn into the right shoulder strap, “class of ‘71″.

Shoving his empty hands into his pockets out of habit he shrugged his shoulders, before offering much more info then anyone asked for. “Yeah, just moved here from Baltimore. Took a job at WWN. I can understand the nostalgia. This place is pretty great.”

Hearing the record drop, August paused as he waited for the needle to fall into the ridge, before pressing the button to switch audio from the host to the music. Once the melody began, he gave the host two thumbs up, alerting them the music has began and they are free to go. Their shift was up. Unlike August’s. He had the enviable position of manning the new initiative that was proposed by his boss. And being the new guy who happened to have a production background, he had been volun-told he would spearhead it.

At least he would be able to play anything he wanted. He assumed most people wouldn't participate, and it would die out relatively quick. Haricks had called it town hall, allowing any and all wixen to come to the station, and leave a note, anonymous or not, and it would be read on the air. A way to get grivences out. “You do know how to read, right Spenc?” Haricks had asked in the meeting, implying yet again that since August was American, he was clearly a dumb dumb. “Haha, sorta” August replied, hoping to just move past the cheap joke.

The sound of static brought August to his sense, sitting up quickly realizing he had dozed off, and the record lineup he had had finally reached the end. “Sonofa” he said, grabbing some record within reach, and placing it on the empty turntable to the left. He dropped the needle, switching the audio, allowing the sounds of Fleetwood Mac’s new song “Tusk” to fill the room.

Letting out a sigh of relief, hoping the air wasn’t dead for too long, he leaned back into the chair, closing his eyes, before kicking himself to rotate around the room. He open his eyes as the chair came to a slow stop, seeing someone standing just outside the studio. Glancing at the clock, he saw the 3 minutes remained of “town hall” time. Nodding as if to say ‘ok’ he pushed himself from the chair, before opening the door a small amount, sticking out his hand for some note or paper of what to read on air.

Though Diagon Alley arguably had a better selection of shops, there was something Marlene had always loved about going to Hogsmeade when she had the chance. The little village was quiet compared to the bustling London shopping area, but the nostalgia was second to none. From her third year onwards, she had delighted in the Hogsmeade weekends, both for the change of scene and the element of freedom that came with being outside of the school grounds.

Lost in her memories she rounded a bend in the street to head towards the Three Broomsticks, and it was only her sharp reflexes which kept her from crashing into someone. “Sorry!”

August had spent the afternoon in London. He had loved Hogsmede, but it was lacking a proper grocery. And he had no access to a garden, and always felt food he had magically conjured had tasted....well... not great. He had charmed his rucksack to maintain the integrity of anything placed in it, allowing him to travel to London, shop, and return home with still fresh and frozen foods, to be put away in his very very small kitchen. Maybe he could charm his cupboards too.

He was making his way back home, when he realized exactly how hungry he was. Instead of stopping, he walked while unslinging his bag and digging through it to find a snack. When he had been glancing over the odd assortment of “candy” a kind nomaj had suggested that this yank try some winegums. He agreed, and now searched for the bag of gummys. When he felt his hand find purchase, he pulled his arm from the bag, just as he about collided with someone.

“Oh, I am so sorry” he said, dropping the bag of supposed sweets to the ground. “I really am a klutz, are you ok?” he said, quickly stooping down to grab the bag and throwing it back into his bag. “I should really watch were I am going, but I was so hungry for a snack I lost all sense” he chuckled, his eyes squinting a bit.

It’s magic will shine again. He was an eternal optimist, obviously. Not that Amelia didn’t believe magic would be brought back to Diagon but it would never be the same. Something precious was taken away the minute the Death Eaters made such a devastating entrance that will forever be an infamous night. She could imagine students and their parents coming to gather their supplies for a new year at Hogwarts – especially first years. Surely there was going to be apprehension about even sending their beloved children away instead of keeping them close to the vest no matter how many times they would be told that Hogwarts was the safest place for them. That was the magic taken away. Amelia was a realist and knew it would take a long time to heal. However, she would do all she could to ease worries by being a constant presence of a reliable Law Enforcer.

“I wish you could have seen it before this, August. It wasn’t tainted. The least we can do is bring the beauty back. The rest will come in time.” Amelia couldn’t have explained to August what Diagon Alley meant to the wizarding world in Europe. Surely, there was a place similar in America, but he wasn’t there anymore. He was in a new, contentious Britain. Not the best time to visit but she wouldn’t say no to an extra set of hands – and certainly couldn’t help but chuckle at death munchers.”Death munchers. We should be calling them that from now on.”

Another laugh. “EAGLES? America trying to be unique.” Amelia leaned in. “They’re called OWLs, kiddo,” she winked. “Let’s start with the rubble on the street. Surely your charm work will help tremendously.”

“Yeah, deathmunchers sounds idiotic at best.” August said, with a slight chuckle. “Yes, EAGLES, the Excruciatingly Aggravating Graduate Level Exams. What are the owls? You bunch sure are obsessed with this bird” he retorted glancing over to a storefront filled with squawking's and a lot of wing movement. August was no idiot, he was aware that Ilvermony was modled after the historic Hogwarts, but.... it was better. He would even argue that the lore of Ilvermony was older due to the connections between the founding and the first peoples lore that echoed through the castle on the hill’s halls.

Pulling his wand from his pocket, he looked around. “What storefront should be of focus? It appears the Ollivander’s is practically built back, and the apothecary seems to be getting traffic for assistance.” He shook his arms out, recalling the unspoken spell he used all the time, watching as his flannel sleeves rolled and tucked neatly at his elbows.

Amos only nodded the statement of speaking about this particular topic elsewhere. Though there were people in the Ministry he would absolutely trust with his life, they were vastly outnumbered by the people he knew very little about, or what he did know, or at least suspected of them was less than savoury. He hadn’t known August that long, but Amos was a fairly good judge of character, and he didn’t feel threatened by the man, he seemed to be a genuinely good person, and there weren’t alot of those around. With a slight flick of his finger, Amos’s office door closed behind August as he left.

The Order always needed new members, though it wasn’t for Amos to say who couldn’t join. The best he could do was to direct August to the right person. It had been playing on his mind for the rest of his work day, and he hoped that he would run into his friend again. As he left the Ministry, he set out with the sole intention of finding August, so as to speak further. The atmosphere in Diagon Alley just hadn’t been quite the same since the attacks, it was better than it had been, but still not the same. It didn’t take Amos too long to set eyes on August once again, and he lowered into a seat across from him.

“You think Amelia is intense?” He said with a smile etching onto his lips.

August had spent the afternoon strolling around London, taking time to see a few sights before heading back and claiming a booth at the cauldron. He order a basket of fries or *chips* and a pint. He began nursing it slowly, before ordering another, when he saw Amos enter the pub.

“We are talking about the same person right? Short but commanding? Shes quite frightening really.” August took a swig of his beer, before wiping his mouth with the sleeve of his flannel. “I went right to the alley when I had heard what happened. Mostly to find you, but ran into Ms. Bones when she shook me down for anything I knew. It had me questioning myself”

Amos’s brow furrowed slightly as he looked at August. The poor guy must have been thinking that he would have been better off not coming to Britain right now. He definitely seemed to have a unique sense of timing anyway. “More than you’d think.” Amos murmured through a sigh, he himself was one, though he certainly didn’t go around advocating it, and it was hardly a sense of pride to Amos, there were so many things that were far more important.

Amos nodded slowly, and thought again that they really shouldn’t be talking about this within the Ministry. He certainly did agree though, Harold Minchum was not doing much, if anything…save for one public appearance. “There are Aurors, The Wizengamot…the Order. There are people fighting….” Amos trailed off, sighing once again because he realised how useless it sounded when he said it all aloud. “I’m in the Order…it’s a fairly new organisation….” Amos didn’t know August that well, and he knew that Albus wouldn’t take too kindly to just giving out this information, but he also knew that August seemed like a genuinely decent person.

August nodded as he listened to Amos. Mirroring his friend, he lowered his voice, almost to a whisper “well thats something. What can I do? Can I join this ‘order’ “. As the words left his mouth, August scanned the area around him. He leaned back from Amos, “we should talk about this later..somewhere else.” he said, still speaking lowly.

Standing, and not allowing Amos to cut in, he said at a normal volume, “Yeah, we can definitely grab a pint after you get off work. I would love to catch up. You know where to find me.” he stepped back, opening the door to Amos’s office, glancing into the very busy hallway buzzing with witched and wizards moving up and down the corridor. He winked at Amos, stepping just outside of the doorframe, before saying “Oh, and we have to talk about an Amelia Bones.... shes very intense.” He gave his friend a small wave, before joining the crowd moving towards the lifts.

“It’s pretty common. Sometimes people marry for love. Or at least they end up liking each other enough so things aren’t miserable.” She knew her parents were in love once. But that was before. Before her father started to get a little too into his ideals. A little too into the superiority of others. Of her brothers. Before the accident. “I thought I was a little too old for it. Turns out, not at all. But he’s not too bad. I at least will be able to live my own life. And he’s not terrible looking. And my age. I’ve seen and heard of a lot worse.”

She let out a shaky breath, realizing the headache she had was still there. She felt a throb right behind her left eye and found herself squeezing Auggie’s good arm. At least she was pretty sure it was. It wasn’t the one he was holding close. She’d feel awful if it was the bad one. “That’s sweet of you. I’ve known for most of my life this would be the case. Or it would be the case if I didn’t marry the right person. Right according to my father who’s wrong most of the time. Though I think he did this to try and punish me. So far…it’s not that bad.”

August hung his head as he listened to Georgiana speak. The lighting in English hospitals were no different then US hospitals, meaning it was terrible. Way to bright, as if surgeries were conducted here in the middle of the hall. He felt her hand grasp his forearm, taking him by surprise till he looked at her face. She had her eyes shut tightly, before relaxing her face.

“Though I think he did this to try and punish me.“

August was completely disgusted. Followed quickly by relief that his parents and upbringing were most likely nothing like Georgiana’s. He patted her hand, seeming to forget that his arm was broken. He tensed his shoulder, before saying “well, your father sounds like a ‘proper arse’ ” adding a British accent to the end.

August smiled, glancing around, The number of witches and wizards awaiting help had dwindled, and he looked back at Georgiana. “Hey looks like we should be outta here soon. I don’t know about you, but I am starving. Wanna go grab a bite to eat?”

Just hearing someone saying the name Amos gave Amelia a lump in her throat. She had to keep clearing her throat and telling herself to listen. Thanks to her job she was able to compartmentalize and do what she needed at any given time without her face reflecting her emotions, but the feeling was still prevalent. Amelia nodded as August spoke. A small chuckle escaped her lips when he noticed he was mumbling. “Yes, kiddo. You’re mumbling.” Kiddo – she was letting the Amos tie bring her wall down ever so slightly.

“It’s important for us to know who is who. Especially right now. I’m sure you can appreciate that. It sounds like you keep good company. At least with one friend. Who’s the other?” She really was curious. Amelia was still keeping her ears open for anything odd but she’s wasn’t catching on to anything. Yet. You never know. So while she was being more informal, she wasn’t done paying close attention.

“Listen, don’t be nervous.” Leaning toward him with eyebrows raised, “I’m Amelia. Amelia Bones.” Secretly she was hoping Amos had mentioned her before but it was fair that she introduce herself as well.

Noting that August was looking around, Amelia got a sad thought. “Is this your first time seeing Diagon Alley?” She hoped he’d seen it in all its glory.

“Amelia, well nice to meet you, although these circumstances could be better” August said, really looking around. As his eyes moved, he replied “and it is, unfortunately. I’m sure its magic will shine again after a good clean and a few well placed spells.”

August was upset that he had not made it to the famed alley sooner, but that’s life. Clearing his throat, seeming to subconsciously mirror the smaller witch, “well Diagon has to rebuild. It’s the only option. Allowing this state to remain can only appear as a win to those deathmunchers or whatever they are called.” August knew he had not answered all of her questions. And he may, in due time. But not now.

Knowing that she had not seen Amos was a good thing though, giving August a slight ease. Clapping his hands together, he asked “what can I do to help, students for Hogwarts should be preparing for the upcoming school year yeah? I will say, I was well versed in charms, even have the EAGLES to prove it” he said with a wink.

Amos paused, and made the decision to close his office door, it wasn’t really something he ought to be talking about at all, and certainly not inside the Ministry. There was a slightly solum look on his face as he turned back towards his desk, once he was sure the door was firmly closed. “They have….Though this was the first public murder…..August….” He started to say, lowering his voice as he spoke. “This is just the beginning…” He didn’t want to frighten his friend, but he also didn’t see the point in sugar coating it, the fact was that nobody was really safe at the moment.

Folding his arms across his chest as he let out a sigh of exhaustion. “End goal….” He repeated, trying to conjure up words that weren’t going to put the fear of merlin into August. “Total control, absolutely no muggleborns– no maj people. The girl whos life they so carelessly took had a no maj parent…” Nor Amos or the Ministry could be absolutely certain that was why she had been killed, but it was a reasonable assumption.

Attempting a smile, he searched for August’s gaze, “It’ll be a long and trying battle to win, but we can’t lose this one. Don’t be afraid of them, because thats what they want.”

“it just seem holey unsustainable, how many ‘purebloods’ can there really be?” August thought aloud. He glanced back at the closed door, before leaning towards Amos. He cracked his knuckles out of habit, before saying in a hushed tone, “I’m not afraid. But I’m also not going to just standby and allow this to happen around me. What is being done to combat this?” August scooted his chair closer towards Amos, before whispering “because it would appear the ministry isn’t in a hurry to stand up to these radicals. There has to be some type of militia forming.”

His excitement was sweet. He was just trying to be a good friend. Be excited for something he thought was exciting for her. “We aren’t dating.” Might as well just come right out and say it. There was no reason to pretend it was anything different. “Our father’s arranged it. It’s why my mother-in-law is doing most of the planning. Typically it’s just the mothers but well…” She shrugged her shoulder, leaning back in the chair. “Hard for both of them to do it when one has been dead for years.”

She turned her head to look at him. “I don’t know if you’ve met him. Barty Crouch. The younger one. He works for the ministry. We both went to Hogwarts but he was in Ravenclaw. So it could be a lot worse.” House rivalries were all but hard wired, it seemed. “He’s been nice to me. That’s already better than some stories I’ve heard. I don’t think that will change either. He’s so hard to read so I couldn’t tell you if he even likes me or not. But I don’t think he wants me dead so….already better than most of our parents, I think.”

August felt his stomach fall when Georgiana said that their fathers had arranged the union. He was about to retort that they lived in 1979, not 1679, but then she dropped the other bomb of her mother having passed years before.

“My god, Georgiana. I am so sorry. I honestly had no idea. And is this fairly common?” August furrowed his brow. When she had mentioned that her husband to be was at least nice to her, which seemed to not be the norm, August was truly taken aback. And not on behalf of Georgiana, she seemed more then capable to handle her own business, but the whole idea of arranged marriage seemed backwards and pointless to him.

“Well, if that ever changes, or you just need someone to talk too, I’m really only an owl away.” He smiled at the dark haired witch, feeling this protective nerve rear its head for the first time in a long time.
