Dear Rosie,

Me and my partner have very different ways of eating meat. They prefer it delicately plated and well cooked while I prefer to eat it absolutely raw, tearing into the flesh and feel the soft juiciness flow into my mouth with the slight crunch of the bones— anyway you know how it is.

Okay so, my problem is as follows: they told me this preference on the first date and since I was trying to be liked I pretended this was my case as well. It's been two years. They love to cook. I have absolutely no idea how to break it to them. 

This has been eating away at me, and I don't know what to do... Any advice would be much appreciated 🙏 Thank you in advance!

"This has been eating away at me" — what a delightful sense of humor you have! And indeed, it seems you have found yourself in quite the sticky situation.

From what I can tell, you care very much about your partners feelings, thus the guilt that burdens you. When you break it to them — because you will have to! — be sure to mention how much you appreciate the effort that goes into their cooking, and how much of your appreciation was true.

You can then work out together how to best fit both your preferences into your meal plans. You could for example suggest some new dishes with raw flesh — such as Carpaccio, a real treat! — for them to try out, thus satisfying both your tastes! You could also determine a day for you to eat meat the way you prefer, maybe a day where they are busy, since your way requires less preparation.

But these are just suggestions! Communication with your partner is key. But chin up, friend, for as much as you care about their feelings, surely they care about yours too! Who knows, maybe they will find it endearing that you tried to impress them, and soon, you will find yourself laughing about this misstep in your relationship!
